Imagine the thought of needing to close the distance. If we can get rid of rangefinders we can then easily put turrets and reticle scopes on the ban list. This needs to happen to put the hunt back in hunting.

you think winging shots and wounding animals is bad now, pull out the range finder element and you’ll have all kinds of animals leaving blood trails on the mountain that’ll never be recovered

Worked for years before technology came into play. What's wrong DB you afraid to have to hunt a little? Put the hunt back in hunting. Get rid of rangefinders, turrets, and reticles. No downside.

No that's not me. Sure doesn't help the "heard" when you are shooting at them from different zip codes. Don't be silly, you just want to send it when you see them from the road. Let's get rid of them, can't hurt.
 
What's the major difference in rifles for hunting since the golden age of deer? 7mm, 06', .300, were all on the landscape. Variable power scopes as well. So address the man's point and don't do the usual. Is there some reason you all need electronics to shoot your gun?

My question back to him is this: Are you a rifle hunter? Are you a compound bow hunter?

It's actually a statement I made to start the post. Rangefinders need to go. Put the hunt back in hunting. Why so much push back to give up your rangefinder?

If you were smart you would get onboard with it. How many bucks would make it through the season in G without your rangefinder?
 
I’m too cheap to buy a rangefinder or carry one hunting. Haven’t regretted it yet.

The reason why harvest rates are lower with bows is because you don’t have t report wounded animals that died a mile away. You want more animals on the mountain, ban archery hunters!
 
Technology has increased harvest rates of all big game species, there is no doubt. I personally think optics has been the leading contributor to higher harvest rates. I joke that rangefinders are "Performance Enhancing Technology". But they are one of many.

If your goal is to limit harvest numbers, here's my take: There are two ways to limit harvest numbers- You can limit tags given out, or, you can limit the hunter's ability. Imagine if the only way to hunt elk was with a rock and slingshot. You could give out a million tags on the San Juan and not sacrifice any animals. :LOL::LOL: But, if you increase the hunter's ability by putting a high powered rifle in his hand, with a 20x laser range finding scope on top, during the peak of the rut, well... then you can only give out 22 tags each year.

We wouldn't use range finders if we didn't all think they help increase the odds of harvesting our quarry. By logic, without them, our odds decrease, thereby leaving more animals on the mountain, resulting in increased tag numbers (opportunity). If that logic holds true, then I would support a ban on range finders.
 
Guys wanting to ban tech are the first ones in line for a tag to hunt with a rifle... LOL In that case, why don't you just ban anything you didn't make by hand? You have to grow the tree first, harvest the wood. Hopefully you find a dead deer or elk to harvest the sinew. Then kill a duck with a rock so you have feathers for the fletchings. Lastly, you'll have to sharpen your flint skills and make yourself a broadhead. Then, and only then, will you be considered a true hunter who takes no advantages over game animals. But also, if you take a shot over 5 yards you'll have to turn yourself into fish and game for a "long range" violation.

I've now solved all of the world's hunting problems.

No, because the law won’t say that. Here’s an example: how long have guys been pushing to get the early LE rifle elk hunt out of the rut? And how successful have they been at that?

I'm slow- is there actually a movement/bill in some state (Utah?) to ban range finders? I can't find anything on the internet about it...

THIS, in and of itself is why we will lose the war on our right to keep and bear arms. I don't give a rats arse if you hunt with a phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range or an atlatl, I WILL support your right to do it. You should do the same.

Where were you on the baiting trail cam issue??? We lost that one or will shortly lose trail cams. A rangefinder is just a tool, why you all up in arms? I'm excited to see them go. Once they go, it won't matter what scope you have, a little bit of hunting will be involved. That won't be so bad will it???

Society was better off before tech increased longevity of life. Too many people sucking up valuable resources where they don't contribute to the output anymore.

The problems we face today are too many people pretending it is their obligation to decide what others should and shouldn't have/use/own...
 
I never thought I’d see the day when a guy would be advocating for hunters to lose a tool that certainly would greatly help them effectively, efficiently and quickly achieve the ultimate goal, a 1 shot, quick kill…. But here we are!

this is more and more like California every day.

No. Our problems in hunting is pretending we can hunt deer, who haven't evolved in thousands of years with tech that evolves yearly.

At some point we have to decide, do you want to hunt? Or do you need to kill?

The modern concept is KILL. Regardless of baits, cams, electronics, paid scouting, guides, etc.

It's no longer give me a tag, let me put myself vs nature.

It's if I don't kill there won't be IG and FB posts, my shlong will be 2inches shorter.

Tell your grandpa you need bait, a trail cam, a lr rifle with 2000yrd range finders, a ballistic computer, etc to kill a deer. Then watch him write you out of the will.

I never thought the day would come that you have to rely on a smart rangefinder to take all the guesswork out of your shot, you've lost all sense of woodsmanship skills to get close and make a clean kill. INCREDIBLE that fact is so hard for most to see.

None of you must be duck hunters, You would know we dont use range finders and you can watch 90% of the hunters shooting at birds that are 4 times out of range and they dont learn not to, so I think if you want to get rid of range finders you may as well get rid of any ethics that many hunter may still have. There are many technologies that are going to be bad for us in some way, I just dont think a range finder is one of them.

A little late for that. The rangefinder ban is moving quicker than the bait ban did. Once the ball starts rolling there is no turning back. Should have thought about that before the bait whiners started their bitching.
 
I don't believe in getting rid of rangefinders but there is undeniably room for improvement to somewhat level the playing field. At some point we will need to or face some real severe losses to "hunting" privileges and opportunity.

Easy fix. All large rifle calibers have a 300 yd zero and all magnums a 400. Problem solved.

I agree, with long seasons and multiple opportunities for stalks, you should still be able to fill a tag.

Of course, we only get days to hunt now instead of weeks or months.

Wildlife and game mangers are usually more concerned with herd health after us modern humans have cheated death until very old age all the while encroaching on crucial range than they are with your ability to run naked through the trees incorporating the use of true woodsmanship skills trying to kill an animal with a stone and sling...

Quit slobbering, take a breath, and use your words. Then put down the rangefinder and walk away......it will be ok. Shoot your bow enough that you know the yardage, don't rely on the technology you might find out you like it more.

This isn't a bowhunting thread it's about giving up your rangefinders. What's the big deal? Are you all so dependent on your rangefinder you are afraid to give it up? Better get a plan in place to figure out how to hunt without one. Regardless if you bowhunt, muzzy, or rifle. It seems that banning rangefinders would be like giving a kidney. I'm excited for it. It's easy to enforce and will make a difference in getting back to hunting. Why you all so worried???
