toughest hunt of my life

LAST EDITED ON Feb-13-11 AT 02:37PM (MST)[p]last year i asked my buddy if he wanted to try barbary sheep hunting. he said sure so we put in and dres the units surrounding 30. for the last year we have done some research, talking, and scouting. and yesterday it paid off. but OMG that was the toughest hunt either of us have ever done. over the last two days we put approx 25 miles on our feet.

We were stopped to eat lunch and glass some canyons. after about 45 minutes we decided to move on down the ridge to another spot. I got up and put my pack on. derek did the same and i happened to turn around and look back up the draw and saw a group of 3 sheep coming right towards us. not knowing how to judge them i figured they were close to 20"(way off) so i said shoot um!! and we shot and killed two. then i looked at my gps which said 5 miles to the truck. HOLY CRAP that was quite a work out...especially with a twisted anke 2 miles from the truck. but we made it back to the truck and went immediatly to the Wester Bar in cloudcroft for a burger and beer to celebrate. my sheep was 14" and dereks was 13.5". dinks but it was a fun hunt and we can only improve on them.

Trying to call you. I think we saw those 3 yesterday.

Zach missed an easy shot on a real good ram this morning. We even came home and shot the gun, because I did not believe he could miss a 230 yard shot. Gun shoots fine, not sure what happened.

Found a group of 9 rams this morning and made a perfect stalk. Kinda bummed.

Good job, every barbary hunt is a workout it seems. Took me a couple years to get my first one.

Great jobs guys! Awesome field pic and any barbary is a good one. Congrats on punching the tags. And you are correct, barbary hunting isn't for the faint of heart! Congrats again.

thanks guys. it was a blast. i have already put my app in for next year. can't wait to do it again....in a year. don't think you could force me up a hill right now. LOL!!

Way to get it done guys. That is one tough hunt and to come away with a ram of any size is an accomplishment to be proud of. I went a few years back and walked about 25 miles in 3 days to only find a patch of hair in some cactus and a rib cage from another hunter.

Congrats guys! Both of those sheep are trophy's in my book. I have yet to get a barbary. I went on that hunt last year and only saw one ewe and a lamb in about 5 days of hunting and probably 25+ miles.

Congrats again!
