LAST EDITED ON Nov-12-17 AT 11:13PM (MST)[p]My 16 year old son was lucky enough to fill his third season tag. Not bad for his first buck. I bought him an otc bull tag, never saw an elk.
Took 4 1/2 days to find deer. Once we did, the boy had a 325 yard shot with a good rest, but the buck moved behind a juniper and disappeared. This one stood proud on a hill with his does at 150, one clean heart shot and he was in the dirt.
The only night with a little snow helped his hunt, kept the deer out a bit longer. There was about an inch on the ground at sunrise, but it melted by 09:00.
A little surprised at the dorks on wheelers and in trucks that drive around but don't get out (thought that was a New Mexico thing). Driving through primo hunting grounds and bailing. Yes, we were on the hill above you.
A big thank you to the guy we met up top, pointed us in the right direction. Hunters are generally good people.
