We have been. Cut our teeth on those elk. They’re very squirrelly. Calling is best, but still tough. One thing we learned is that when they go from responsive to silent, that’s when they’re coming in (assuming you have those swirling Uinta winds in your favor). I’ve been conditioned to be particularly vigilant when they go quiet.
Speaking of Uinta wind, it’s usually best ahead of a front where wind is a little more consistent direction. Still tough though with eddies. With the thick terrain and swirling winds, it’s hard to still hunt. So, calling is still best, unless you find the herd and can somehow get a little lucky. I’ve done it, but not consistently.
Lastly, every time we think we found a good area, it goes to crap quickly as other people find it too. There are no secret spots anymore in public land general season elk that won’t be discovered. Elk just leave too much sign. Gotta be willing to keep moving and discovering new areas or go where the elk have gone.
I’d just recommend everyone avoid the Uintas and go somewhere else.
