You made a mistake and got the wrong family home in that photo. that appears to be the residence of a McCoy. Ransom's relatives always built two story homes. So they had the high ground advantage by shooting out of the second story window. Ransom will confirm this with you so you can take this as bona fide truth.

Close but RELH is right about the high ground advantage. Looks alot like Dude's family home to me. We would have had the trees cleared back far enough away so as to have a defendable position, leaving the open ground to the hogs thus making a belly crawl attack unlikely. Besides it was usually the McCoys who were under attack. They were good at dying.

Ransom none of my ancestors ever lived east of the Rocky Mountains as far as we know and I'm sure no southerners. though I did see and old picture of a guy with no teeth in the family album so maybe......no wait he didn't have a mullet or a banjo. nope, just west coast.
