Who here carries a gun with them when they look for sheds? Just curious to see how many do and what are your main reasons..

Hell yeah, way too many cats, and I shed hunt in an area where a guy I know was stalked by a mountain lion. I dont know if a gun would help but its nice to have one anyways. Main reason? Protection only. EBS

Crazy people........you are far more likely to stumble on a drug crop or crazy (criminal) person than be attacked by a lion. Plus I just like guns.

Andy

yep, 45 long colt for the lions and the crazy people. Not to mention its fun to shoot.

Damn straight. I carry a firearm everytime I head out. Whether i'm shed huntin, Christmas tree cuttin, and or bird watching. Regardless of the reason, there are too many reasons not too. It's just the way it's always been, the way it is now, and the way it always will be.

I carry two thought most people did. 9mm on in the pack and 40mm on my side. Cats, rabbits, coyotes you name it.

I don't, but if I had one I would... It's better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it!

Smith, US Special Forces

I do. Just makes me feel better. And I hate snakes, mt. lions, and freaks. Also protects against people trying to steal my enormous horn pile! (ha, ha)

LAST EDITED ON Feb-23-07 AT 02:45PM (MST)[p]I do...because I CAN!

Also: Grizzlies, Cats, Wolves(no fear of humans at all), fun, etc.

More worried about idiot humans than from Mountain Lions but I agree it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and be SOL.
My current carry sidearm is a CZ 75B in 40 S&W.
Best,

Baracho I hear your packing more like a 22 short snub nose revolver in those sweat pants of yours.

like baracho i also pack a 357. no real reason just cause its my god given right.

I used too, but got tired of the weight. then I ran into a wold that really pissed me off, so started packin again, then gave it up again. Too much weight with all of those antlers.

I do in case I see a big buck that hasn't shed his antlers yet.

Just kiddin,

I usually pack a Browning Buckmark 22. I don't do it for protection. I'm not worried about cats even though there are cats where I shed hunt. I even jumpped a cat of a ledge one time. He must have been suning himself when I walk over to the edge an looked off. He didn't stick around long.

Like the bumper sticker said, I carry concealed 3 days a week - you guess which three! I'm not too scared of wildlife, the most dangerous animal in the US wears clothes. Would shoot a critter that needed shooting, though.

Those are the same reasons for me too. Whatta ya know!? Well thanks for all the input guys..

I'd be more worried about wolves than cougars. That may be misplaced, but thats my gut talkin'.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-01-07 AT 11:41AM (MST)[p]I usually carry one just to plink around with while I'm stalking the horns. But in the back of my mind i also have in case i take a dance with a grizzly or something else. I just love guns and I carry them with me when I can!

I've only seem two cats in the wild and they were more afraid of me than I was of them. I've heard some hair raising stories of cats stalking people though. But Where I live their are so few that I don't worry about it.

i pack one because i'm normally calling coyotes at the same time. you never can tell i might catch the big bad wolf stealing one of my sheds or killing my game.

Saturday my wife and I ran into a lion. It was good to see one for a change, we always see tracks. Last Saturday we ran right into three wolves as we topped a windy ridge. When I told a friend about being 50' from the mutts he got a smile on his face and asked "how many did you get?" Then he realized that I don't pack anything more than pepper spray as his smile turned to a frown with the comment that I should have had a gun. I have pondered these and dozzens of like experiences the last few years. I hike hundreds of miles a year in grizz and wolf and lion habitat the whole time. I have never needed a gun to defend myself--Lucky? Yes. Blessed and protected? Yes! On the other hand I feel it's time to pack enough heat to defend myself. This forum discussion has brought up nothing new to me but has enforced my determination to get a gun that I can strap on my pack in case I need it.

I never did like to carry much weight, but pretty much support all the reasons you guys mention.

Its time to buy one now that I'm taking three kids of mine, and wife, camping/hunting/fishing.

Shot a titanium 44 mag the other day. Very light, very accurate, handled recoil very well( I feered the recoil with such a light gun)

Whens the damn IRS check gonna show up?
