Well here's my Oryx I harvested 3 minutes prior to eating tag soup. This was a tough hunt due to the wind, but I had passed on 7 or 8 smaller sub adult Oryx on Sat & Sun morning. We hunted hard and covered a lot of ground in 2 days. The Oryx were hunkered down in the wind so you really needed to glass a lot. It was so windy that glassing was difficult because you couldn't hold your optics steady even with a tripod. The dust was really bad too...couldn't see for crap.

Yea the wind was tough! Glad you got one, I was looking for you on Sunday AM where we talked about....... Nice bull, remember no one in the world other then people who have hunted and killed oryx know what 30" or 34" or 38" looks like, just you! HECK OF A NICE ONE, great job!

Thanks for the comments. FYI, the picture was taken outside the gate. No cameras are allowed on WSMR. Were were able to drive my truck right to him and load him whole. Nice.--KH

I was guiding on this hunt and it was great. We passed on multiple mature animals and our group ended up killing the biggest bull and cow harvested on this hunt! The cow measured out at 41" and some change, the bull was 38" and we also killed another 36" cow. This hunt is still great in my opinion depending on who you go with. Hey compasswestoutfitters how did you end up on this hunt? How big did you kill and was it a bull or cow?

You guys may not want to mention the fact that you guys take clients on WSRM. If the rules are still the same it is illegal for clients to pay for a guide on WSMR! Just call them your friends.

Nice oryx! My father and i are going on this same hunt come jan 17th. I was wondering if you had any advice or pointers since you have already experienced the WSMR, in hope that we can have an idea of what to expect when we get there....?

Well actually I am an approved Outfitter on WSMR so I am in the clear. Incase you would like to check for yourself though it's under Antler Addiction Outfitters (Arthur Richard Baca Jr) is the name. The advice I will give is that people are right when they say the oryx are everywhere, but that doesn't mean you don't have to work to get a respectable one down. I would suggest a really good spotting scope and someone to go along that knows what a mature animal looks like from a mile away, that way you don't waste precious time on a stalk when there is no real shooters in the heard. Also someone that has been on multiple hunts is key because weather predicts this hunt and regardless if the oryx are up moving around or not these experienced people know where the oryx are at. Rain, snow, wind or shine regardless this is still your once in a lifetime hunt, don't settle for a mediocore animal and blame it on the weather. Anyone who hunts can spot these animals and manage to put a stalk on them, but knowing the range is more vital than that on these hunts when wheather is bad and also when you are trophy hunting ( in my opinion every person on this hunt should be trophy hunting, because you only get to do it once).

Trapking, you are wrong about it being a "once in a life time" hunt. Although it may or may not be on WSMR, you still have opportunites to hunt oryx even after you have done a "once in a life time" hunt. And your chances of shooting a bruiser are just as good. There are depradation tags, "as called" hunts for Ft. Bliss, McGregor Range population management hunts, off range hunts, WSMR Security Badge Hunts and broken horn hunts. These all afford great opportunites for oryx, whether you have done your once in a life time or are still trying to draw it. I had a depradation management on Rhoades Canyon two years ago and it was a blast, and I was all by myself out there. In my opinion, some of the other hunts are more fun than Once in a life time because there isn't as much pressure to bag out and usually not as many people. Remember, not everyone hunts for horns either. Some people still hunt for meat. #6 in the world for you, might be a 20 inch brownie for a 12 year old kid.

Trapking knows all too well about off range hunts too..these guys kill more oryx on and off range than anybody i ever heard of...and Big ones too.

Pablackbear you are right about there being other oppurtunities to hunt oryx other than your once in a lifetime hunt, But the only one that compares is the badged hunt because you can be selective on what you want too harvest, but lets face it how many people actually have an in on these oppurtunities. The deperadation hunts are all left to chance because the range escort tells you, you need to shoot the first oryx that is available. Unless you get a really cool escort you better go on this hunt realizing your going to shoot the first legal oryx. I have also been on multiple off range hunts and know that this is also not a hunt to be picky on because the number of oryx off range is far less than on range. A trophy is in the eye of the beholder, and depending on each individuals circumstances they should kill what they are capable of killing i.e. youth, mobility impaired, etc. But for those who know how too hunt and are capable of hunting hard there is no reason to not kill a oryx in the high 30 inch mark. Once-in-a-lifetime is a bit more than a hunt to fill the freezer, don't get me wrong I do enjoy the meat, but the trophy animals on range is still significant so why go home with anything less than a good one. I'll tell you why the success rate on mature animals are down Mr. Pablackbear it's because in the past people have gone on these hunts and it has been like shooting fish in a barrel, the oryx were everywhere and way less weary. So people go on range now thinking it's gonna be a walk in the park. The quality animals are still there, only now it's an actual hunt!

Trapline, I definately agree that the nature of these hunts has changed. If you want a truly large animal, get out of the truck and go after them.

Was a fun hunt other then the wind, we killed a small bull on Sat at 4pm, hunter needed to get back to school for finals and needed to drive back to NE for that! Was a nice 22" bull he found and wanted to shoot. I did hook up with another hunter before I went home at the motel from CA who only saw 1 all day. We went back on Sun to an area that we hunted and saw a ton of nice adults on Sat. Killed a big body cow in the AM we were first off on Sun with a 36" adult cow with a hunter who was in the dumps after his first day. Glad you guys did so well they are both big!!
