Max Deer Points 87 or 102

LAST EDITED ON Jun-01-18 AT 05:39PM (MST)[p]I'm done waiting and ready to hunt so I really want to burn my WY max deer points this year. Haven?t drawn anything elsewhere as well. I've narrowed my deer choice down to either 87 or 102. Wanted to get thoughts on this. Big factor is my wife will accompany me. Her first time on any hunt. We are 53 & 58 and in good shape. Wondering how the water, terrain and proximity to towns compares with these two hunts. I expect she will need a hotel occasionally for a break from camping. Wi-Fi for my work would also allow me to extend my hunt. Could arrive a week early to scout and hunt the full two weeks if necessary. Thanks.

I've never hunted 87 but if you draw 102 pm me and I will help you. Good luck![font face="verdana" color="green"]

LAST EDITED ON May-28-18 AT 06:11PM (MST)[p]You may have a decent chance at an 87 tag with your max points based on the regular draw odds last year, but in that draw with max points it was only a 48% chance at a tag in 102. IMHO neither of those units is conducive to being what you want to take Fang with you. Rawlins is the only town near 87 and it's on the south boundary. Rock Springs and Green Giver are the only towns near 102 and they are on the north boundary, so you're talking about some real driving time to get into the middle or opposite ends of either unit. PS: I'm glad to hear it sounds like you've overcome the health problems you were having.

Rawlins is
>the only town near 87
>and it's on the south
>boundary.

Casper is only 35 miles away from the northern part of 87. We usually hunt it from the house Mike.

102 odds in 2017 were 48% but those odds will go up considerably this year due to all the max point holders who drew last year are out of the point pool, and the fact the deer quota increased for 2018. I expect odds to be 70-75% this year.

Why would Ken want to go another 35 miles further from the unit boundary if he would draw 87? FYI Ken is newly married to a 50+ year old wife that still lives in China and I don't believe she has ever been involved with something like he's talking about doing with her. That's mainly why I'm thinking of those areas not being conducive for him to use all his points if he has to take her to town every few days and the towns are all quite a ways from the interior of both of those units.

Zim,
I hunted unit 87 in 2012. Stayed in the Holiday Inn in Rawlins and hunted south of the Ferris mountains. Had a fun hunt and killed a 160 class buck. That said, I was really surprised at the lack of deer and size. I did a ton of homework and hunted hard. If you do a search on here for unit 87 deer you'll find my report and a pic of my buck. I'm certainly no expert but let me know if I can be of any assistance. Chip

I have no idea how the odds could increase that much from 48% even if a few more tags are being issued this year when there are still 13 max PP holders that applied last year and didn't draw and could this year if they bought another point, which they probably did. Add that to others with max points that might be applying for it this year and Id be very surprised the way odds are going that it will increase and especially to 70%-75%. Good luck on whatever you decide to put in for, as that will be quite a trip for the new bride!

102 Max point pool draw odds went from 25% in 2016 to 48% in 2017 even with one less NR tag. So with the quota increasing this year, 70-75% certainly isn't a stretch. Either way my chance is good. It's more deciding on 87 or 102.

Anyone familiar with the terrain difference? Is the majority of the deer habitat desert type stuff?

Haha yes I know I hunted G once. It is a beast and I didn't even consider it due to the wife.

Ken you can go south into Utah out of 102 and be @ Flaming Gorge lodge in like 30 minutes for those days your Mrs needs a break and you need to WiFi for the job.

whatever you decide---->Enjoy

Hey Ken,

Let's talk via facebook. I'll shoot you a PM with some info and feel free to call me if you'd like.

We have had good luck with VRBO vacation rentals. When you figure in daily fuel expenses, these rentals sometimes are a no brainer.

Robb,
Nice accommodations but I'm afraid the ex & her lying attorney eliminated all such posh luxuries from my life 10 + years ago. Had the misfortune of seeing her at my son?s wedding in San Antonio Saturday. Disgusting seeing her there knowing she stole my son?s college funds, after all my land and retirement funds, while she was hard at work being unemployed for 30 years. I'll be relegated to anything with running water during hunt breaks, if I can draw.

A simple "I can't afford it" would've done just fine...

According to Eastman they are both among the best areas in the state . . . So it must be true.

Of the two, 102 would be my choice.

Hunted 102 last year. All season every day all day. Took off alone to get gas & water food & most of time after sunset I'm 66 so it ok hunt seen lot of deer 9 to 5 buck groups Big 3 & 2 point shot the last day heavy 24"4x4 + 1 fun but not great bucks have photo info if need

You're lucky he didn't tell you about how she use to lay on the couch all day every day eating chicken fried steaks while watching Jerry Springer, LOL! I've heard that one more than a couple times!

I give him a few points for at least applying in hunt areas he writes about.

Now that the draws are in I'll give you my opinion from what I'm hearing If I still had max Deer points I would put in for 130.
Even without weather I know of a few REALLY nice Bucks that have come out of there.

You posted that too soon, as the application period doesn't close until midnight tonight, Mountain Time!

Well TOP that was for Zim since that wasn?t one of the units he asked about I didn't want to muddy the waters. LOL
I'll never have close to enough points to draw that or any other high point unit again to many other options to sit out that long again.

Doesn't matter to me either Bruce, since I'm out of the PP rat races. However, if Zim gets a tag and another MM member that puts in with max PPs sees this and doesn't you should probably watch your back, LOL!

I wish I would have seen this post earlier. I've spent a chunk of time in 87 over the years and can add some input. There is private land issues in part of 87 plus relatively poor genetics due to 4 pt or better regs for so many years (lots of medium to large 3x's). There are a few nice bucks in 87 but you'll have to do a lot of searching to find them. Not a whole lot of tags issued in recent years. The deer population is somewhat low and slowly recovering. You better have gobs of time to find a 175"+ buck unless you get super lucky!

You didn't read his last post pardner. He has changed his application to unit 130 after reading that recommendation!

Jim,
Yes I know. However, this is the same review for every deer unit in the state of Wyoming for the last 13 years. And what I do know is my aging body is not getting rebuilt unless there's some new technology I am unaware of. And just returned from my third funeral in last 12 months all three guys younger than me @ 55, 54 & 29. And I've drawn no other tags this year with just a few results left. So it's time to burn points and go hunting. I stuck with 87 due to it's close to Rawlins, where my wife & I can recharge batteries on a low budget.

Also nice it's not too far from Fort Collins where we can visit my neice. Hunting is not always the most important thing to me these days when making these decisions. If I draw, and no other tags, I may go early and try some during the archery season.

Good for you, hope you draw and have a good hunt! Please post some pics and story for the rest of us who will never be able to hunt there, safe travels..

So you're saying that you picked 87, then went in an changed it to unit 130, and then went back again in the last hour or two and changed it back to 87?!

Who cares where he applied? The results will be the same. He'll show up and shoot a crabby young little mule deer buck, then somehow say it was the hunt of his life - while still blaming his ex-wife and Don Peay for all the curves that have been thrown his way.

Points 87 or 102

I'm a little confused where Zim applied but 87 is different than a lot of other units in Wyo because 87 had 4 pt or better tags for so many years. A large percentage of the bucks in 87 are 3x's with horrible genetics! You are correct that Wyo muledeer are in recovery mode throughout the state but other units definitely have better potential if bucks have aged long enough! Some units worse than others depending upon localized drought, winterkill, winter range conditions, etc. You will likely have your work cut out for you in any Wyo muley unit to find 180+ muley bucks right now! Generally speaking it takes around 5 to 7 years for a muley buck to grow 180+" antlers....keep that in mind and know the weather history for the units you plan on applying for! If you are in a hurry and want to hunt Wyo muledeer this year you may be disappointed if you are only interested in 180+" bucks. If size doesn't matter go ahead and hunt...and have a great time! Depending upon the unit, if you hunt long and hard there is a good chance you may get lucky...but hopefully after your hunt you don't hear, "I told you so!"

I agree with who cares what unit. But little buck.....no. I'd eat tag soup first. Done that plenty of times. Haha, now when it comes to Peay-to-Play, he has screwed a hell of a lot more folks than myself! But being the outfitter you are with your disabled profile (dead giveaway), I'd certainly expect you to defend him since his policies feed your welfare trough.

jims, I was aware of the 3x genetics there because several pm'd me. I'm actually OK with that because others mentioned they saw giant 3's but passed, later regretting. I hunted such a unit in Colorado 551. 12 years ago. Ended up taking a 172" 4x4, but actually bumped a monster 3x3 I'd preferred if I could have squeezed off a shot in time. I'm not about points, like a heavy rack with character. If I draw this would highly likely be my only tag, and I have a lot of freedom at work, so I could hunt as long as a month if need be. I am banking the odds are I would find something I like in a month. If not, at least I know I will have great company trying.

SPAZ an outfitter? Now there's some funny stuff! SPAZ defend Peay, that's even funnier! Zimny, if you had half the hunter in you that SPAZ has in him and you drew any decent area in Wyoming, most likely a trophy buck would hit the ground.

So, since you mentioned it, how many more people has Peay screwed than you?

LAST EDITED ON Jun-01-18 AT 05:36PM (MST)[p]You can read what he typed.
No mystery there.

I don't know SPAZ but I would bet the ranch I have PASSED on more P&Y deer & elk than he has even layed eyes on, despite where I live. I probably have more family than he has out west as well. That's just the way it is.

WTF. The dude has zero input on a 50 post thread than just drops in and makes a personal attack out of the blue, directly against MM policy??? What a tool.

If you spent a month scouting and hunting in G you would likely be able to find several eye=poppers. Not sure you will find that in other units?

Zimny, quit making assumptions about SPAZ when you haven't a clue who he is. If you had a ranch to bet(which you don't because of your ex and her lying lawyer) it would now belong to SPAZ. The true statement is SPAZ has killed more B&C deer and elk with his bow, than you have ever laid eyes on. He'd teach you a lesson about B&C antelope too.

But whatever, you want to keep chewing on that foot in your mouth, go ahead. Arrogance will get you nowhere, except for guys who won't give you the time of day.

Zim, Post photos of all those P & Y and B & C critters you're bragging about! Most of your posts just complain about your divorce or how all the draws are screwing you over!

Topgun,

With all due respect, why are you posting in this thread? You have somehow managed to craft no less than 10 posts for a topic for which you have ZERO knowledge and ZERO input. You know I have a lot of hunting experience, so am obviously familiar with publicly published draw stats available to anyone. So your mention of 48% is worthless (I also subscribe to HT & goHunt).

I have previously PMed you to kindly request you butt out of my threads. What part of NO do you not understand? What part of the MM post guidelines do you not understand? Let me tell you something. Sometimes I go to Panera's to do my work on my laptop, just for a change of scenery. Often I have the misfortune to have some group of what I call "desperate housewive's" sit next to my table. These women don't work and have nothing better to do than park themselves there and GOSSIP ALL DAY LONG. Blah, blah, blah chatting about absolutely nothing. You are the MM epitome of these women. You've got to be retired to have so much time blabbing about nothing, and making personal attacks online because you have nothing else to do. There are like 2,000 threads going on MM alone right now. Yet you somehow are gravitated towards mine, when I kindly informed you you are not wanted and please just go away. Are you posting on the other 1,999 threads all day long too? Why are you here???

>If you spent a month scouting

Jim, I'm not sure either. But as I mentioned previously, there are a lot more factors than just the biggest buck. I have hunted region G before. I'm not taking my wife up there. I am familiar with the eastern Red Desert area as I've had 3 hunts in that vicinity. It's much more realistic a place to take my wife, with Rawlins nearby for breaks. That's just the way it is. I'm not into building points any more. I just want a decent hunt this year. Not next year.

Thanks for you useful input as opposed to some other trolls on this site.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-02-18 AT 04:15PM (MST)[p]Read this slowly Zim and then read it again because your post is so full of chit I have to respond! I initially made a couple posts on this thread helping you because I didn't think either unit you mentioned would be good because of the driving time to get to decent towns to take your wife to without going a long way, which is exactly the information you asked for in your post! Your posts on this thread turned into exactly the BS I read in about 90% of the posts you've ever made on the 2 or 3 websites I'm on where you also post. We are all tired of reading about your failed marriage involving your chicken fried steak eating while watching Jerry Springer ex wife that ruined your life and burned you for every penny you ever made! It has absolutely nothing to do with hunting and there is no reason we need to continually read about your piss poor personal life! It's either your continual BS bitching about your past poor marriage or reading about how you're getting screwed on the draws in every state you apply and want to hunt just like our other member mentioned! I also have no idea about your hunting experiences in the field other than reading what you post and because I don't know a single person on any website that you have ever hunted with that could vouch for you and your professed expertise! I also don't remember reading any friggin PMs from you regarding what you mentioned asking me to stay away from you. Yes, I have lots of time to help others and I do a lot of that on several websites because I am retired and have been for 16 years after a very successful career in LE for the State of Michigan. I also spend more time in one year in Wyoming than you have in your entire miserable life and will be out there for over two months again this Fall, so stick it where the sun don't shine and go have fun with that new bride you probably bought over in China, LOL!

PS: You are obviously one of those "do as I say and not as I do types" when you gripe about my posts about you that are nothing but repeating your posts about your past life or getting screwed in the draws and then you turn right around and make that last one that is actually "attacking" me and my character. What a tool!

Yep, you hit the nail on the head just like jm77 and I have in our posts! My first three posts on this thread were positive ones trying to help him make a good decision on where to take his new wife. Then he came up with his typical BS about his ex wife in post #17 like you mentioned and they continued on in the thread until I had enough of it just like Jeff and told him to take a hike!

Bahahahahahaha ?????

Poor zim, I hate it when somebody I don't like, posts on my thread, in a public forum. Here's an idea.... If you don't want Topgun, or others to post on your thread, it's simple. Don't post!. Problem solved.

Haha! Well I can see all the regular Peay-to-Play supporting outfitters showed up with their disabled profiles. Dang, still hatin about AZ HB2072? It's been five years! If it weren't me it would have been someone else that snuffed it out. Get over it.

Topgun, just because the MM moderators are the most lenient on the internet doesn't mean you won't get banned like Eastman's did to you.

As I emailed you long ago, I think it's pretty obvious you have some deep rooted emotional or mental illness. Unsure if people like you can comprehend your own deficiency. Zim, I'm not an outfitter! Post up all those big critters you're bragging about over the years! Give us a break from all the bitching & complaining about your woes me life! I don't have a ranch to bet but if you want to bet something else I'm in!

LAST EDITED ON Jun-02-18 AT 10:06PM (MST)[p]I really do feel bad for those that go through hard times, and hope the best for even those I dislike. I've been through some myself. Hell I damn near died two years ago. Worst year of my life. But dwelling on it and playing the poor me card doesn't do any good. Zim, I wish you the best and hope you pick yourself up. Hopefully this Chinese import doesn't take you for your other half.
. Crying about tags you should have drawn and it's unfair they should have been your tags blah blah. Cry me a river. This is all Coming from a non guide that doesn't benefit a dime from wildlife.

Oh and yes please post up all those animals you boast of. Does passing P&Y or killing big animals make you a bigger man over the next guy?

Whoa, wild left turn taken...You can tell there's nothing to hunt right now! ;-)

'Ike'

Bowhunter...

From Zim: " little buck.....no. I'd eat tag soup first. Done that plenty of times."

Did I somewhere miss the play by play of your last years' hunt where you used your highly coveted AZ "points" on a permit in a premium unit, a permit that you were long overdue and entitled to, then came home with a dinky rag horn? Then, to crown it off, stopped by on your way home in the red desert of Wyoming and killed a stunted antelope buck?

I hope you drew around Rawlins and can take your new bride - the dining and lodging there are second to none. And big bucks, no problem.

Don't end this now! It's just starting to get good! Two of the best going heads-up! Keep it up boys! Or get a room! Great entertainment. Thanks!

Zim,

You did a great thing back in 2012 by getting the TV interview that saved what......500 primo public tags from the SFW auction block? Many of us here in AZ are still VERY grateful for your efforts, keeping those tags in the public lottery. But you probably should have done it anonymously. That cost them nearly $400,000 in Susan Gilstrap lobbying fees alone! When you are talking about money like that, on top of all the clients the outfitters lost, you are going to make a LOT of special interest group enemies! Including Don Peay himself. But speaking from the common man's viewpoint, thanks again! I still have a chance to draw a primo tag here, unlike what has happened in Utah. And I know where you are coming from with the disabled profile comment. All the guides hide behind those here on MM.

Anyway I'm actually familiar with WY deer unit 87. Hunted next door in unit 89 once back in the 2000's. I dove through it several times during my hunt en route to Rawlins. But no current info. Looked like great deer country, and I saw EJ has it rated very high this year, so I'm sure you will have a good hunt if you can draw. I think you will with max points.

You've got me scratching my head. If you hunted deer in 87 last year, how do you figure you'll be able to hunt it again with the max number of PPs that it takes or are you possibly a resident that may have a lot better chance at drawing the tag?

SPAZ,
First of all, Perhaps it's just the way I was raised, but I classified you as a tool because you trolled on to my thread out of the blue and crapped on me for absolutely no reason whatsoever. I have been on numerous hunting forums, some as long as 23 years (Bowsite 1995), yet somehow during all that time I have never once done that to anyone for any reason. Why??? What's the motivation??? Now retaliating to trolls is another matter. The only excuse I can surmise is your parents did a real crappy job raising you? Just wondering what the thought process is for someone like you. Someone piss in your cornflakes?

As to my AZ archery elk hunt last year, being the big game pro that you are, you should know that you have to be willing to pass on a lot if you are after a trophy. My hunt was the 4th best elk hunt I was ever on. Very good. I was chasing a 400" and a 390" from the opener. I got within 30 & 50 yards of each one day, but obstructed. That's hunting. I also passed on 30 bulls from 320" to 350". I've taken lots of 320-350 bulls, including a 340" from that same unit in 2004. My 2017 standards were not high. They were VERY high. But I love elk meat too. So I decided from the start I would take a meat bull on the last day of the hunt, which I did. I did the same thing for a moose hunt in 2012, except heard willows clicking and gambled to pass on the med bull in my sights the last day there. Clicked the safety off. 10 Minutes later I ended up taking the 5th biggest bull in the state of NH that year. And the only one who took one over 50" without the use of an outfitter. Solo DIY. Don't got 12 member posse's. It's called hunting, not executing. Sometimes you win, sometimes not. Still a great trip and was able to successfully guide a senior AZ resident on her first elk hunt afterwards.

As to the WY lope hunt, if you took the time to read, you already 108 is not a trophy unit. It was just a throw away bonus on my return drive home, after the other 99 hunters with tags had long picked off all the shooters. I was hunter #100, setting first step on it 6 weeks into the season! Also, 90% of the lope were planted on private by then. If you live there you gotta know all this stuff. Hardly rocket science. 108 only takes 2/3 points to draw. Geez. Who ya crappin?

I'd guess he's hoping to get tag in the random draw. I'm sure you'll be along shortly to give us a tutorial on the statistical impossibility of that though.

Didn't take a brain surgeon to figure that one out Chance! At least if he's a resident like Junior thinks he'd have about a 10% in their random draw. Ya happy now?!

You and your followers took that comment completely out of context, but I'm glad if it gave you a laugh!

Just curious, do you have a pic of your 87 buck from last fall?

If you click on that link in his previous post #71 you'll see his pictures of a really nice buck that most would shoot in a heartbeat.

https://imgur.com/a/vFnmgxV

I spent a few days trying to find that big buck that I saw scouting and I ended up shooting this guy. Not the biggest deer I saw, but a decent buck.

There were bigger, but I ran out of time. There are a lot of wide 3 x 3's in the unit.

If I had to do it over, then I would go opening day and weekend of archery rather than waiting for the rifle.

If you get weather, then I think the rifle hunt would be the ##### especially towards the end of the season.

I would love to draw again to try and hopefully catch up with that mongo buck if he is still alive and try to hunt him again.

The archery plan is exactly what I was thinking. I applied for the archery deer at AZ Kaibab (33%), which opens Aug 24. If I don't draw that, I could drive out and do the bow opener in 87. Even if I draw Kaibab, I could still swing up there to 87 on my return drive from AZ. Either way I'm bowhunting the first couple weeks of Sept.

I think this unit might just be the right one for me. I am not just fixated on 4x4 frames. If I see a heavy wide 3x3 or 3x4 I would be more than happy to drop him, and at the same time improve the gene pool for the residents. Seems like a win/win to me.

There are quite a few wide 3x3's. And you may have the mountains to yourself, because the elk archers may not be up that early and there were only 2 archery kills last year by residents. The year before that there were 0. It would be a really fun bow hunt.

Would you say enough of the terrain is favorable enough for archery there? I have not hunted 87 in particular, but for goats in surrounding 56, 64 & 108. I've never tried to deer hunt in that type desert stuff. Did find timber in some draws on the southern end of goat unit 108. Not much cover otherwise.

Never saw any terrain like that in my hunts in the area, except far in the distance. I would pack my compact LW climbing treestand just in case. It's worked like a charm at the Kaibab.

>Never saw any terrain like that

That would be because you weren't in the "area", wouldn't you think Zimny?

>That would be because you weren't

Nope, but around it a lot. First hunt nearby was across I-80, unit 56 pronghorn 1997. Friendly local broke into my van and stole a G. Loomis flyrod I inherited. Not cool.

I've spent quite a bit of time south of Rawlins. The line of Ferris Mtns is A LOT steeper and deeper! There is private land issues close to Bradley Pk. Once you get south or north of Ferris the terrain is more in line with south of Rawlins country. Be ready to see lots of 3x's!

Jims, dude, you are right! I remember now, when I was young, back in 1987-88, there was a 4 point APR in area 87! Yeah, in those two years they totally altered the gene pool of the mule deer herd. I was wondering why we saw some 3 pt bucks when my wife had the tag. You hardly ever see 3x3 mule deer bucks out deer hunting! Do you? I don't know why anyone would apply for for 87. Can you imagine, thirty years later and the gene pool is still screwed up from those two years!!

IT'S INCREDIBLE!!

I'm not into big 3x3 bucks, so I didn't apply for 87.

>JM,
>I'm pretty sure it was a

Pretty sure or know for sure?

I have this quirky habit of keeping my regulations since apparently 1979. I know for sure jims,
area 87 was a 4 pt APR for just two years; 1987-88.

The Seminoe side has many places that would make for a good archery stalk. It is more open, but there are ways to use the topography to get close.

The Ferris side is pretty much up and down, but it probably the more timbered out of the two.

Both you can make it happen, it is hunting after all.

>I'm glad to see I'm not
>the only one who saves
>that stuff, Jeff! Made me

To top that Cliff, I'm sure I have every license coupon I ever filled out!!

JM

That's an awesome collection of regulations! Do you keep antelope and elk also?
BTW your comments are so great they even brought the ol Buzz out!
