Live in California? Why?

I took two of my kids to a track meet in Santa Barbara on Sunday and realized how lucky we are to live on the coast. We sometimes take for granted the beauty that surrounds us. Here's a little tast of what I am able to enjoy.

Also, the cruise ships now go up the coast to SB, San Francisco and Vancouver instead of heading down south into Mexico.

if it was up to my wife thats where we'd live. she can take or leave the mountains but loves the ocean. looks like a nice time with the family Wiz.

+1 on the great looking family.

Another advantage is you can breath. My house is right at 6000'. Not much O2 here. You don't notice the difference till you go to the coast.

If I wasn't tied down to N. Utah I'd move to SoCal pretty quick despite several things about it that annoy me. Best thing of all down there is the weather. Worst thing, traffic and real estate prices. Still, there is a reason so many live there.

You can keep that mess city boy, nothing great about cities and clusters of people!

I always get defensive about where I live.
California is an enormous state, so many people hear the word "California" and imediatly conjure up negative images.
Not all of it is great, that's for sure.
Let me show you "my" California.

It's springtime here now.
Here are a few pics from last week..
This is my friend's ranch up the road where we'll be hunting Blacktails this fall...

My son Thomas was helping a friend brand, dehorn & castrate cattle a couple weeks ago...

These are a couple of lifelong cowboys, they have taught my son so many things that I never could have, kinda like the grampa Thomas never had...

The boy on an iron horse watching Kurt do some branding, nothing like the smell of burning hair on a spring morning...

Thomas took his cousin out "hunting" a few weeks ago and the found these beauties.
Thomas found the big spearhead, his cousin found the nice arrowhead...

I have a great life here in Cali, There are plenty of better places in this world, but what I got ain't bad.
Nope, not bad at all.

Wiz;

I have to agree there is nothing like the CA. coastline for beauty. The only problem is you have to rub elbows with too many liberal yuppies that live there.
For living I prefer the northern Ca. mountains with it's many lakes and streams and most of the people have good common sense and know how to put their pants on when they get up in the morning.

I spent 2 weeks in Santa Barbara attending the homicide institute and was glad to get back home after rubbing elbows with those yuppies.

RELH

Ya, Santa Barbara has quite a few yuppie liberals. I live in the Northern part of the county in Santa Maria. Santa Barbara gets the majority of the tax dollars and we get the majority of the low income housing. I would never live in Santa Barbara but it is a nice place to visit. We're only an hour from it so we make it down there 3 or 4 times a year for our kids sports. We've got 3 or 4 lakes around and a lot of public land to hunt. Like HH says, California is a big state and it's not all cities and smog. Boy, the Santa Barbarans don't like those off-shore oil rigs either! Theres 8 or 10 of them and they consider them eye sores in a big way. To tell you the truth, I'm shocked they are still there.

Steve

I took this one from my front window the other day with my camera phone. I know many of you thought the Pacific was much bigger.

The kids make it a great picture!! Truly.

Driving to see my mom yesterday, I saw antelope and lots of mountains.....including the tetons. Don't believe I'd trade views.

Within the shadows, go quietly.

Kali truly has the best & the worst I've ever seen. Having said that. Roosevelt & Vernal are one of them secrets best kept to yourself. Maybe even Price LOL.

OVERTON............thanks for posting the view out my kitchen window.

I'll put the Sierra up against any view anywhere.....but I readily admit, I would prefer it if we were annexed to become Western Neveda.

There are alot of mts. in Kali, but sometimes you have to look really hard to see them (Ontario)...a little bit of everything.

I agree with you Harry 100% about Cali being a great place to live and I suppose it's one of the most diverse states around.
I have lived at both ends of the state and you are without a doubt living in the better end.

I moved to Southern CA 8 years ago and besides the dove hunting and tuna fishing it sucks compared to the northern part. The only other great place at this end of the state in my opinion is where Nickman is and some incredible country over there.

We are either relocating back up to the northern part of the state or out of Cali all together because neither my wife or I care much for So CA.

I've lived in Humboldt Co. CA for about 60 years. I keep hearing how beautiful California is, and it probably is. I just wish I could see it!

Again I ask you where did all those people came from that live in your area now? Driving down US 101 through town I saw many people who looked like hillbillies.
North of town I saw a few herds of Rosies and south of town down by Laytonville I saw a huge herd of tules as well as quite a few blackies. So even though you have lots of fog your area is still a great place to live. ??? Was I supposed to write that here?

Ransom, good question! I think it's people from Arkansas who came to visit and got lost in the fog?

Eel

Eel;
If Ransom said they were hillbillies, you can bet they were hillbillies. He is a expert on that. Anyone from Arkansas is nothing but a displaced flatlander, not a hillbilly.
So you are complaining about your "tule fog", well in that tule fog you have your "Tule elk" hidden. so quit complaining and do a little hunting.
As for that traffic jam posted, I saw the same thing in Idaho last fall on the highway from Jackpot to Twinn Falls. Darn locals and truckers did not have their chains, or would not chain up and jammed up the highway for over ten miles due to sliding out and collisions.

RELH

"I saw the same thing in Idaho last fall on the highway from Jackpot to Twinn Falls"

Yeah that traffic can be rough there... About once ever 100 years its stop and go lol.... I try and take the back roads.

Cali has some Hell Holes for sure.
I try to stay away from those places.
Kinda like bitchin about Denver or SLC.

It's who you are, not where you're from.

Traffic sucks no matter where you find it.
I stuck the camera out the window on our Wyoming trip last October.

I have to be thinking that you won't have California to kick around much longer.

This state is flat broke and hurtin'.

I think the State Government has a plan to subdivide the entire state and sell the pieces off to the highest bidders......probably the Chinese.

I guess if I have to choose between sweet and sour shrimp or Menudo, I'm going for the shrimp.

Hardway- You are correct. Come September we'll see a whole lot worse in the way of the size of fires. The fire planes are flying into the Santa Maria airport several times a day and my kids really get a kick out of it.

HaHa! I don't touch the stuff.

I just heard on the radio that the Jesusita fire is creeping farther down into Santa Barbara and is heading toward city limits. Uh oh!!

Steve

Bakersfield is an armpit, if I'm being honest. I don't get over there much but have been there several times. I'm sure you'll get the same response from others. I'd never move there.

Steve

Stick, depending on where you live in Bakersfield, it can suck just like any other big city.

The upside is they have everything you need to make it tolerable.

Travel time of about 2 hours to the beach, the desert, the mountains, etc. Good fishing access and lot's of Forest and BLM land close by.

All that said, it would have to be a VERY good job for me to move from Arizona to THIS state. Nah! There ain't that good a job.

It is still California.....(even though most people in Bakersfield think it's Oklahoma) and you will be giving up a lot of freedom by moving here.

I will personnaly tease you no end, if you do it.

The City of Bakersfield has an application you must fill out in order to become a resident there. The first question on the application is:

"Do you have all of your teeth?"

If your answer is "yes", they throw your app in the trash and send you a denial!!

There is California and there is everywhere else. As far as Bakersfield goes you could put it in any other state and it would be one of there better cities/big towns. There really are not too many bad places to leave in California. I think you can live pretty much anywhere in California and in a few hours drive you can be at the coast or in the high mountains. If you like desert we have it, if you like mountains we have it, if you like urban cities we have it, and some of the most diverse coastline anywhere. The geography is as diverse as the people here. I think that is what makes this state great. JMO

I have been to Bakersfield a number of times and the very first time I went it was early evening and not knowing where to get some good food, found the local Elks Lodge. After a couple of drinks, I ask the cute barmaid where I could get a good meal since that night they were only serving Spaghetti. She told me to go to "caseys" or so that is what I thought she said.
After driving down the darn street and back twice, went back to the Elks and asked her again. She laughed and said it is called "KC" and gave me another drink for not pronouncing it correctly.
I found the place and was amased at the waitress' attire there, micro mini shirts and all young "ladies". Had a great dinner and two nights later took the guys I was meeting there for the Drag races there one night for a good meal. One guy said that "we all have a hero in our lives, and tonight Brian you are my Hero".........what a lively way to have dinner. LOL

He had a few drinks prior to his statement.

If you are in Bakersfield, go to KC's Steak House, it is great.

Wiszard;

I will enlighten you. There was a certain female member of the state legislature from Santa Barbara that sponsered a bill on septic tanks and got it passed state wide.
It seems that liberal female was upset over the septic tanks in the costal area of Santa Barbara was allowing pollution of the costal waters. This was due to the very sandy soil that allowed the septic water to permeate though the sand.
Now all septic tank owners in the intire state is required to have a tank inspection every five years at a cost of 600 bucks for the inspection.
The stupid libs did not take into account that other areas of the state does not have the problems Santa Barbara does with sandy soil, and it is a unnessary expense for them.
Our members of the state legislature is fighting this right now to have it resended for areas outside the costal water districts, and they are not enforcing it until a decision is made to modify it.
I vote we do not allow those libs to take a crap so that their precious costal waters is kept pristine.

RELH
Yea! they b$tch about the oil rigs, and forgot to shovel out the crapper they use.

RELH- sandy soil....near the beach? NOOOOOOO! Can't be! Having a septic tank inspection, no matter how often, is not going to keep the liquid out of the leach field. It seems like a total waste of money. The inspection is to check for leaks and the stability of the tank itself? What a joke....a leaky tank is the same as a leach field, less the bed of rock below and above the leach lines. Sounds like a bunch of BS that they make the owners have the tanks inspected. Thats the government though, huh? Thanks for the clarification.

Steve

wiz,
I don't want to pour any fuel on the already going pissing match, but I was born here in the great state of CA and will die here. That being said, it does have it's problems and it's pluses.
There are more hunt-able game species here than any other state including TX, more variety of fishing species here, the highest mountain and the lowest desert in the lower 48, almost 1/2 of all land is public and we have an actor as governator...
On the down side we have more ILLEGALS, residents, taxes, fees, than any two states combined and we have an actor trying to play the governator...
I won't bother post any photos, as I live close to where you took those that you posted, beautiful ain't it...
And IMHO, I would pass on Bakersfield if I were you...
I have traveled around the world and no matter where I go, it is always great to be back home here in California.

Stop Global Whining

+1 easymoney I'm also right around the corner from where Wiz took the photos, its pretty hard too beat cali here, just have too put up with all the crap.....

Yeah RE, what is very funny about this
is that all the riffraff sooner or later leaves CA and heads to____________, just fill in the blank, because whenever I travel out of state, there they are...
I am up the coast a bit and it is gorgeous any time of the year...
Now if we could only get rid of all of our politicians and start over...

Amen, easymoney. And, by the way, I hope I wasn't coming off as trying to argue with RELH. That was not my intention. I was just commenting about the whole septic tank thing.

ras1954- It's too bad you gotta spend most of the day time sleeping!! HaHa. My business has been picking up so I think I made the right decision. I hope things are good for you.

Steve

Me either...
But as to the septic mandates coming from the SRQWB they will affect every property owner that is not on sewer now. And maybe even those who are in the future.
The wingnuts are among us and they are writing the rules...
Stop Global Whining

It is my understanding that wingnut from Santa Barbara that wrote that bill is no longer in public service, must of lost her re-election bid.
Wis, I did not take it as a argument on your response. I am also a native CA. and I have not found another state that I would prefer to move too from here.

RELH

Mon. April 20th just south of the Fess Parker an Army Core of Engineers "ocean nutrient project"? was going on. This was basicly a sewer pipe running under the street into the sand larger around than my arms spewing sewage into the ocean.

I got to spend the worst two years of my life living in L.A. County. Saw the Rodney King riots up close and personal.

Lived through the Landers EQ and was very fortunate to move out just before the Northridge EQ. I used to everyday walk under that mall parking lot that collasped, and drove over that freeway on-ramp onto I-5 that motorcycle cop went over.

Had one vehcicle stolen, caught the scum in the act twice more, had a best friend killed when an US Airline landed on top of the Skywest plane that he was in...

My second daughter was born there, and the hospital staff incompentence just about cost me both my little girl and my wife, but both survived and my daughter turned out pretty cool, despite being born in Kali.

If I ever go back to that stink-pit it will be too soon. Just something about Kali and me don't mix. But hey, if you like living there, I'm happy for you... :)

All I ask is that you all quit moving to other states (mine in particular) but if you choose to escape Kali anyway, please stop with the "how great Kali is" and how the rest of us should start passing laws so we're more like Kali...

Thank you. ;-)

Hey Mozey- I don't want other states to pass the same laws we have here. We've got too many as it is. It's not the laws that keep us here- it's the weather and the having the beach, the mountains and lakes all within 15 miles of eachother. If you ever get a chance, if you care, take a look at the central coast (Arroyo Grande specifically). It's really a great place to live if you can get through all the political BS that goes on here.

Sounds like you had some bad luck here so I don't blame you for not coming back! Sorry to hear about your friend.

Steve

Mozey, comparing the L.A. area with Northern California is like comparing the Mohave desert with Humbolt bay. There is no comparsion.
Like you we also take a dim look on L.A. and bay area refugees that come into our area and want the conveinence of urban areas while living in a rual area. It don't mix.
If I had to choose to moving to L.A. or the bay area, I would be a ex-kali boy in a heartbeat. Those areas have landscape beauty, but too many of the people suck big time. A lot of the better ones do get out after retirement and being tired of the rat race they had to live in.

RELH

RELH nailed it...
Too many folks take a visit to Disneyland or LA and return to their home state & tell their friends just how much "Cali Sucks"
I hear it all the time.

See any difference between southern Wyoming and southern New Mexico?
Well, California would cover that distance if laid over the top of those states.

All surfers, gays, liberals & concrete.
Yeah right....

Problem is, it isn't the "location", it's the people.

Along with everything that we have more of, than any other state, is the fact that we have more of the types of people, that make living ANYWHERE, miserable for regular folks.

Not in any order;
Liberal politicians.
Obnoxious Gays.
Gang bangers, of ANY ethnic group.
Illegal aliens.
Welfare abusers.
Actors playing politics.
Democrats pushing their agenda in schools.

Now, if any non Californnian, can tell me that their state has NONE of these same people, on a smaller scale, I'll call BS on that.

The reason we have so many, is because this state is such a GREAT place to live.

I'll trade you.....any state....item for item, something you have, scenically, that we don't.

All that being said, I have a small rental property in Ely, NV and within the next 5 years, I am moving there. The politics here are just too much to tolerate.
