It was a good day

This year I did not draw a deer tag here in NM.

We have had a super busy hunting schedule this year. However, I saw the weekend of Nov 20th I did have any hunts that I was helping on or family had, but on Monday I was traveling on business. I had 2 days to work with.

With this in mind about 6 weeks ago I made some calls to outfitters to see if they had any private ranch hunts that were NOT guided, that I could get cheap, and the possibility for a quality buck.

Our own JFWRC told me he had a tag for a single hunter on a property they hunt antelope on. One of his guides had seen a decent buck on it (about 170ish)

Jim, was super flexible. He understood I only had 2 days, and that I wanted to go unguided. Jim gave me a good deal on the tag.

I met with the rancher friday at 1:00 and he showed me the access roads and gave me a map. That night my good friend Kevin and my son Zach met up with me after I scouted that evening not seeing a deer, but, not wanting to put to much pressure on the few square miles of this ranch that have mule deer habitat.

I found a decent spot to glass from for first thing in the AM.

This morning, we were there before daylight. We saw one deer that we could not tell what it was about 3/4 miles away and a few does closer.

This ranch like most antelope properties is very flat and there were 3 square miles of deer looking country with no roads. We got the wind in our face and started working our way through it. About 2 miles in Kevin spotted a group of deer and kept saying big buck. By the time I got on it saw a few does, but, no buck.

The next 1.5 hours was very frustrating. We lost track of the deer and almost blew it. We finally located the does again and now we were only about 500 yards away. I saw the buck and nobody else did. I saw it was huge. All I told them was that it was a shooter.

We worked our way in to about 240 yards. The does (about 6 of them) milled around a group of juniper trees. I knew he went behind the tree, but, could not see them.

I set up on the bog pod, but, Zach found me a lane that I could shoot prone off of the packs.

we then settled down and waited. We waited about 30 minutes and then something upset the does. They started running away. I knew I would not have long to make a shot. He came out trotting after them. I took the only shot I had. The famous texas heart shot. This shot was at 280 yards.

They all disapeared, and then I saw the does going up the hill without him. I found him and got another quick shot off.
He went behind a tree, I almost shot through the tree at him. I got one more shot and the guys told me he was down.

That was a long walk. I was very happy when I found him. Will try to get some pics up.

I want to thank Zach and Kevin who are the best hunting buddies you could have. Here is one pic of the whole posse.

I'd say that's a heck of a way to finish an already stellar year. Congrats!!! I have a feeling JFWRC is gonna be getting a few calls!

Jim (JFWRC) is one of the guys that consistently advertises on MM, and this allows us to have this forum.
I would not ethically been able to mention that I bought this tag from him if he did not advertise on MM. So before someone sounds off about free advertising, one it is not advertising, and 2 JFWRC is one of the guys that pays the bills.

I have spoken to Jim a couple times over the last few years. Mostly it is arguing on the phone or in PMs about our slightly different views on NM hunting. He is a good guy and cares about NM hunting. He always returns a call and does not hesitate to tell you if he disagrees with you.
This was a last minute opportunity, and I do not think that either one of us really knew how it may work out.
Goes to show you, even on a antelope property if you allow the deer to get some age who knows what you may get.

WOW great Deer.Glad you had a good time and found a keeper.
Can't agree more on what you have said about Jim, He sent us maps all marked up for a unit we had drawn and we was DIY hunting, He tried to put into the deer and it was a good trip we saw a couple of good ones and just never was able to close the deal.
Jim in my book is a straight shooter and now days that a hard thing to find. Thanks for the help.

This is it for me until Barbary, but, my wife has a elk hunt the last week of the year and then Kevin has oryx and Barbary next year also. Looking forward to some good times.

Congrats!

So did you hit him all 3 times? I couldn't see any obvious spots where you hit him.

It's hard to tell from the pictures, what did he end up scoring?

I thought maybe he missed on that one, usually it doesn't take a follow up shot if you make a good Texas heart shot! ;-)

Dang PC! Outstanding deer! Boy,there for a second I had a flashback to southern NM 1974.That animal deserves a gnarly floor pedestal.Do I need to call Kim?

The Texas heart shot was what ultimately killed him. This pic is not an exit or entry hole, but rather a slicing shot that cut the cape and laid him open pretty good. Sorry npaden, no pic of the Texas heart shot.--Kevin

Here is the play by play on the shot.

We got in on this buck with about 6 does to about 250 yards and did not figure there was a good reason to get a lot closer and take a chance.

The settled into a small group of juniper trees. Could always see some of the does milling around close, but, the buck went behind the trees immediately.

I started off on sticks (bog pod) standing up, but, Zach told me there was a good shooting lane and I could get prone.

We stacked all 3 packs on the ground and I got on the ground.

We waited 30-40 minutes it seemed, and then something worried the does. They started trotting away. The only shot i had was from behind.

Pretty sure that hurt him bad. Saw the does going over the hill but no buck. Saw him briefly in the trees and got 2 more shots on him. One must have been a clean miss, but, the other opened up his chest area and hopefully did not ruin the cape.

That was the only sure shot I had. And since I saw him before he went behind the trees I knew I had to take what I got.

Melvin (Doseof7mmmag) , I am running out of guns to trade for your services!!!

>Wow that's a nice buck, sure
>looks bigger than "170-ish".

I am thinking 180-190ish. 170 was the number I have never been able to get past.
Will try to score him when I get home.

Dang nice buck NMPaul, I heard from a buddy that your buck was taken in Unit 38. those are my stomping grounds but I hunt the public lands that border the privates, seen some monsters in there thats for sure.

Not in unit 38, but, real close. Khart, did not get his buck this year either did Zach. I got all the luck for deer this year.

I'll take the kid in trade, but he'll have to get use to living in a house that has crap luck in the draws.

A great buck for sure Paul,it would look good as a euro too, leave you some room for Zachs trophies!!!!Happy T-day!

>nice buck paul. let me know
>what he scores.

178 5/8 is what my taxidermist scored him at today. Was sure he would go 180+.

Still real happy with the buck. But, I do want a 180" buck real bad.

I agree taxi, tape doesn't do an animal like that any justice. I'm sick and tired of complimenting this hog of a buck on facebook and looking at it on here...Paul, quit killing so much big sh!t!
