Much congrats on a fine goat! I'll have to figure out how to upload a bmp image of a good friend's goat he took in Turkey this fall..it was a toad, too :) Gotta take him up on a hunt and head back over one of these days before I get too old. If anyone knows how to upload a bitmap, let me know. Happy New Years everyone...I'm gonna try to post more here as soon as I can get away from those silly fly fishing forums. I've asked alot of the folks here and probably not given back as much as I should, but I promise to do better...anyone need info on unit 50 elk? Doh!

Phil

nice billy....good job man!

hey, did see any more of them sweet little vampire cats on the actual hunt?

i'd wager that once the guns started, not too many of them slinkers were lounging about, sunning their fat bellies?

glad you had a great hunt!

Thanks guys!

I'm not sure on that photo format but would love to see the pic. email it to me and i'll try to post it for you. [email protected]

I didn't see any of those big kittys on the hunt. Well, I take that back. We were packing out my goat after dark and we did see a big set of eyes with the light of our headlamps. The eyes looked too big to be a fox. It was 100 yards in front of us and in the same area i found those three cats.... Couldn't tell you for sure but it looked like cat eyes.

OK, let's see if this works! I think I figured out how to convert it to jpeg. Sorry about the bad pose...those savage Turks! ;)

LAST EDITED ON Jan-01-11 AT 05:19PM (MST)[p]damn Phil, that is a hammer goat

some alpine/asiatic heaviness to them horns

them florida dudes don't favorably compare in mass....but there are some real long dudes in there

probably was a damn slinker lookin at ya one yer way out Chase...hey, is there any specific regulation against shooting at large predatory eyeshine in yer headlamp at at close range ??? Gee, i DO wonder... ;)

congrats to both the big billy hunters killing great dudes from points far and wide on this good Earth

Cheers Guys, and a Happy New Year to Ya!

This hunt rates at top of the hunts ive been on. When Chase asked me if I wanted to go I couldnt pass up the opportunity. Getting to see as many ibex as we seen was pretty cool. I was amazed at how well they could get around on those rocks. I hope that one day ill be lucky enough to draw a tag and go back.

Good work Chase....I quickly scrolled through your post on Hunt Adventure Challenge and WOW...you did it right. Congrats on a stud billy.

Philthy....that is a goliath of a billy. what the hell happened to the ibex in the Florida's? I'm somewhat certain that the ibex in NM are Persian Ibex, is the beast you illustrate a Siberian Ibex?

Actually, they're technically called Bezoar Goats, native to Turkey. I think they're smaller than the Siberians. This one was killed in the Taurus Mountains north of Adana and Tarsus. Probably 75 miles as a crow flies from the Mediterranean Sea in southeast Turkey. Sea level to 13000 feet in a short distance is pretty cool. Hunt in the morning and scuba dive in the afternoon. I got to meet a guy that fled Afghanistan in the early 80s and he was wanting to take me "home" to hunt Markhhors, those curly horned goats. Unfortunately, I doubt there's many of them left and it would be a death wish to hunt there. Damn shame!

Amazing place with lots of pure strain Russkie boars, chuckar, and Caspian Snowhens (a member of the grouse family about the size of a Turkey!) I hunted these guys a few times while I was stationed there, but it was tough since we military folks were limited to shotguns with slugs! Omer bought a Rem 700 '06 while he was attending the University of Texas and the customs fees were $3K when he got home, nevermind the 4 month "quarantine" of his gun. What a nightmare!

I did pick up a few nice shotguns while I was there. Bought 2 Italian Marocchi O/Us for about 500 each and a Russian Baikal side by side for 100 bucks. It's an ugly gun but it shoots well! Also had a couple of Huglu O/Us made in Turkey but I sold them for a couple hundred apiece...stupid me. Saw one the other day on gunbroker for about 700.

I believe the ibex in the Floridas are of the Persian variety. Hopefully some day I'll get a tag! I just wish there was a non-res cap on everything here. :( Ibex are really cool critters. Speaking of which, I remember drooling over them at the Albuquerque zoo back in the early 90s...what happened to all the "New Mexico" wildlife like them, elk, antelope, and deer? All they have now are those mangy dogs the bead and berkenstock wearin hippies fawn over.

Here's a couple more pics of a different ibex and a boar from the same area. The terrain isn't much different than the Floridas but wetter. It still hurts thinking about those hunts 15 years ago! I sent a message to Omer on facebook, asking him to join us on MM.

I also prodded him to apply for a hunt or two this year if he can make it to the States. It would be a hoot to take him on a hunt this fall if he got drawn...heck I'd fore go a hunt to take him. I just wish I could have one of my best friends over for hunt. Down to Earth, workin stiff that only dreams of the hunts we have. He would be at the top of my list if I ever won the lottery since I'm a workin stiff too. All my friends over there would give you the shirt off their backs...typical Turks! They really have the family values/honor thy father thing down pat. We could damn sure learn something from their culture.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-02-11 AT 08:32AM (MST)[p]Great pictures and descriptions Philthy...have always wanted to go to Turkey

Taxonomically, bezoar and persian are considered the same race of ibex...but 'ecotypes' within a species can show widely varying physical attributes, particularly in the size and conformation of 'luxury organs' such as horns and antlers

consider our own rocky bighorns....NM rockies just don't typically compare favorably in mass to say, missouri river breaks rams. We do grow some very long horns (over 40" is not uncommon, but i'm pretty sure that only 2 of our harvested Rockies ever have had a base over 16"

the relative lack of horn weight is what keeps most of our big age class dudes with plenty of length out of the 190's

hell, then there's colorado, which supports 6-7 times the NM population, but they're lucky if they kick out more than 2-3 rams over 180 any given year

I believe the florida ibex source stock was Iran....and the billies from there are almost identical in horn conformation from the pictures i've seen, though our NM goats seem to grow longer horns

cheers everyone

LAST EDITED ON Jan-02-11 AT 12:49PM (MST)[p]Great billy, Chase. Congrats on the hunt of a lifetime, literally! I wished I could have made the scouting trips and hunts.
I hope I can follow in your footsteps and draw the tag. This'll be my 12th time in a row to try! I am going to go muzzleloader this go-round. I've never tried for that one.

The goats in the Floridas are Bezoar ibex, although the name "Persian" somehow took root and became commonplace to the New Mexico herd. To my knowledge, nowhere else are Bezoar ibex called "Persian" ibex.

The bloodlines did indeed come from Iran. I'd almost be willing to bet that the herd was brought from extreme southwest portion of Iran where it meets and shares a border with Pakistan. The terrain down there is alot drier and alot more harsh than the western portions of the country. This is also the grey area of where the bezoar bloodlines meet the sind ibex species. Technically almost same the goat, only the sind being just a bit slimmer, smaller, etc due to environmental conditions.

Those bezoar lines from Turkey hold some real brutes. Great length along with tremendous mass. I plan on doing that hunt sometime sooner than later.

I'll be chasing Mid Asian ibex come Nov 10th in far eastern Kyrgyzstan near the China and Tajikistan borders, the brutes of the ibex world. Biggest bodies and horns.

I certainly hope my luck holds true as it did for you guys!

Congrats again on making the most of your tag. I am just a bit green over here!

LAST EDITED ON Jan-02-11 AT 01:17PM (MST)[p]I fully agree with your assessment Scotty...i think the south EAST Iranian 'Persians' are quite a bit more similar to Sindh goats than they are to the Turks

hey, Good Luck and Best Wishes on the expedition for the King of all Ibex this Nov....mid-asian are indeed the finest, though to my mind, closely shadowed by the Alpine

the top three for me would be a prime old billy of each those two, followed by a big ol hammer Turk from the Med

Heavy Brutes!

I'm with ya there!! Now who do we need to call to get the prices of a Swiss Alpine hunt down to acceptable levels and into my tax bracket??!!

After the Kygyz hunt, I am going to look hard at either a Turkish hunt or a Mongolian combo with both the Altai and Gobi on the agenda.

Thanks Scotty. I received your message and have been meaning to give you a call. Things have been crazy busy during the holidays ...traveling and what not...

well Scotty, i think skipping consideration of Swiss altogether is a decent start :)

Osterreich is the ticket for them Alpine goats

but man, if Frog had a viable hunt option, i'd go in a second

ah hell! i guess i might as well admit that i AM slightly prejudiced against the swissyards anyway...and if it were my only option with the cash in hand, i don't think i could summon the shame to pay that damned country one stinkin centime for ANYthing! i've been ripped off enough by them already

well anyway, congrats again to Chase on a fine big dude, Best of Luck to Scott with the big Asians, and thanks to all of you whom have provided the great pics and tales!

cheers!

Chase, i'll give you a ring in a few days, bud. Lets get out and go find a covey or 3 of mearns w my pups in this dimal season!

Great,
Should I defeat the odds this yr, I'll be sure you're the 1st to know, whether it be on "the rock", or up on wheeler. I'll need a good goat man with me to keep me sitting on my trigger hand until the right one steps out!

ha! you got it man....them curly wheeler goats are especially tricksy ;)

seriously, Good Luck in the draws, and regardless keep us posted about them big Asian billies in Nov!

chase......Congratulations on a beautiful trophy!!! Great pictures and thank you for sharing!

Ol' Buzztail...

Chase,

Outstanding Billy! Very well done. Your Hunt Adventure Challenge was awesome to follow and I was chomping at the bit a few weeks ago to see how it ended up. Looks like you knocked down an awesome goat. Great photos, great video work, and a great ending for sure. After all the work and prep time you put in, you definitely deserved it!

Any of you guys with knowledge or experience with the New Mexico ibex,

I am debating on applying for muzzleloader tag for ibex since the rifle tag is worse odds and there is an increase in the muzz tags this year. What is the success rate for muzzleloader ibex on the Florida's? No guide. Your videos showed you guys getting pretty close to some nice ibex. Are they really that hard to get within muzz. range? Do all the big ones get shot during the youth and rifle hunt? Thanks for sharing your hunt adventure with us, I enjoyed the pics, and video. I can't wait to get a chance at hunting an ibex someday.

Thanks, Justin

One thing to keep in mind while watching the video... The OIL hunt only has 15 tags. The video was day 1 of the hunt so their was no pressure from other hunters. We also hiked our butts off and i'm sure luck has a little play!
Not sure of the muzzy success percentage... You will be following 200 archery hunters and joined by 49 other muzzy hunters. They will be ALERT! It is possible to shoot a very nice billy. Rifle hunters leave a few big ones ;-)
Good Luck and thanks for the comment!
