Elko / Battle Mountain bird dog owners

Hi. I'm reaching out. Looking at the possibility of getting a bird dog in the next year or so.

I'm wanting a shorter range, smaller breed. Likely a Brittany, or Spaniel of some sort. I don't care about papers, even would consider a mix breed. As long as the parents hunt and have good temperament.

I'm not interested in labs. I might like GSP, GWP of WPG.

I have hounds, and some are aging, as am I. My daughter is coming to hunting age and is liking the bird hunting.

This will be for chukar and huns. Short hunts, not day long, miles long walking extravaganzas through the Bluffs.

I'm wondering if anyone has, or knows anyone in the Elko or BM area who has any, and I might reach out to and pick some brains.

Thanks.

I have a French Brittany and absolutely love him. He’s not quite 2 and is turning out to be a great bird dog. For as good as he is in the field he is even better at the house. I’m not sure if all French Brittany’s are this good overall but I’ll never get a different breed.

I am on the list for a new pudelpointer for the spring. I absoluetly love the breed and would share the breeder info with you if interested. They are on the medium size, but an amazing family/hunting breed in my opinion, especially for upland game.

My recommendation is to find a proven breeder that spends their time hunting the exact way you plan to. I bought a GSP from Table Rock Kennels in Boise, and he mostly hunts chukar and huns with his dogs. He breeds his dogs to handle the chukar hills. I’ve been more than pleased with my dog.

I currently have a Lab that is a great family dog and bird hunter. That being said I’ve had a Brittany in the past and he was a wonderful family dog plus great bird dog.

Thanks for all the replies guys. We are still working through ideas in the house.

Travel at the moment is challenging, due to being on dialysis, so that's why I'm really trying to find someone in Elko/ Battle Mountain area. I also want it to be a family dog in the event I'm not able to hunt, my daughter has a pal.

We have a very large, fenced yard, so that is not an issue at all.

Thanks all.
