DIY ELK/Mule Deer

My sons and I are looking at planning a DIY hunt for elk or mule deer next year (2013). We are looking for advice/suggestion on where to go and be able to get tags for either , Colorado or Idaho? Its 50/50 right now some want elk some want mule deer but its agreed we would go for whatever and where ever we would get a tag.

In colorado you can find units that you could hunt both in with zero points, not familiar with ID. Won't be great units and you'd have to hunt 2nd season or 3rd season. Not sure I'd do that though, hunting elk is hard enough for a beginner but when you skip 1st season it makes it that much harder.
As for units, you have to decide that... Do you want to hunt steep rugged country, wilderness, rolling country... That will help you narrow down your search for a unit.
