Sounds like a great idea to me. I’ll check it out.Just go up Franklin Basin and hunt any of the drainages lots of elk, get away from the road all forest land
No it should be a fun tag to case a branch bullIs the tag more like a curse than a blessing?
Northern California Mule Packer.Where are you located?
5 of 18 not terrible! I wonder how many were holding out?Hunted it last year with a brother. Can be frustrating or good. Helps if they are vocal towards the middle to end of hunt. Water holes would likely be his best bet early for his first bull with a bow the first half of the season. I think 5 out of 18 hunters were successful in archery hunt last year. I know 3 out of the 5 that punched their tag. I'll be looking around this summer, might have some info for you later. Good luck.
We won't show up until Sept 20th or so, that is the plan at least for now but that could change. As much time as I have put into this and it's only been a week, Sept is going to take forever!Hunted it last year with a brother. Can be frustrating or good. Make sure to pull your cameras before July 31st, new regulations this year here that don't allow cameras to be used after thatWe won't show up until Sept 20th or so, that is the plan at least for now but that could change. Yes. Not a ton but that area got hit with some late moisture.Heading out next week into the area to do some scouting and set some cameras with my son. Any snow up high?
I’ll update the site with some frequency. Thank you for the offer to help my son, I appreciate it. I couldnt imagine us not finding elk if we cover ground but you never know. The hunt is almost on!Some nice bulls, quite a few rag horns, not too many cows and calves. Should start talking in a week I hope. If I had 10 days to hunt, it still maybe the 16-26, give or take a day or two. No cameras, makes it harder to keep an eye on moving bulls from summer to rut areas. Still a good thing in the long run IMO. Fun to scout and look. Keep us posted. If you have a hard time finding elk after a couple days, PM me.
That damn smoke seems to be September’s norm anymore. Let’s hope it pushes out with the change in weather. The smoke this morning is thick. Their advising people not to be outside more than necessary because of air quality. You can not see the Wellsville mountains from mid valley. With that said the temperature is Upper 40’s in the valley which is positive. Temperatures are forecast for a downward trend and the smoke should clear mid next week as a weak storm front pushes in.
What ended up happening with your north cache hunt? I'm considering putting in for it this year?Pm sent
All good man. I appreciate it.I'm not at liberty to tell another guys hunting story so that is why I responded to your PM like I did.
Robb
Nice man. Glad to hear he got a bull! Thanks for respondingResponding to Matt. Hunt was crowded even for the limited amount of tags. Seems like most hunters are hitting all the same spots. We tried cow calling and never had any luck with that. We only saw cow elk the first day, the rest were bulls without cows, even the third week of Sept. Country is thick so it's tough to tell how big or small these bulls were. We didn't see any giants but my son did kill a bull. We didn't see any other bulls in the truck
