Woooohooo, another year has come and gone and there were plenty of big bucks and bulls that hit the ground. We were fortunate to see a few of those giants at the Watering Holes Big Buck and Bull contest in Spring Creek. There were many great bucks in the contest that anybody would be happy to put a tag on and then there were some really special bucks that ran away with the prizes. First off I'd like to thank Jack and Kenda Constable and my wife Janarae Edwards all Co-owners of the Watering Hole for putting on such an event. Many locals look forward to this occasion every year and I'm probably one of the biggest fans. Second, I'd like to thank all of our sponsors new and old for helping us put on this event. Without you it would not be possible. Thirdly, due to the large number of entries our contest only measures a box score because if we tried to measure Boone and Crockett we would be there measuring for a week straight. Box score means that we take the width and add it to the height, count up the points and add everything together to get our score per individual animal. Many times in this system a buck that would score highly in Boone and Crocket measurements will loose to a lesser buck. So you never know who is actually going to win.
So lets look at some pictures. This young man named Zack Freeman won the youth category with this great buck and recieved a Weatherby Vanguard 243 for his efforts. Look at how those main beams turn down.
Second place youth was taken by Travis Long with this beautiful buck.
Third place was taken by David Collins with a true 7x7 which is something you don't see very often. Davids twinn brother also took a very nice buck this year. These boys are gonna put a hurtin' on the big buck population when they get old enough to hunt on thier owne.
Next we'll go to the archery category which was taken by Josh Cadwell. Josh won a new bow, and the Big Buck mug which entitles him to free beer for one full year until the next contest. Jerome Semper was last years winner and had the honor of presenting the "crown" mug to Josh. You can see in the picture Jerome with his last mug of beer. I thought Jerome was gonna cry over loosing the free beer, ha ha. Congrats to you Josh on a great buck. Josh is in the middle and Jack Constable is the guy presenting Josh with his new bow while Jerome is the big Basqo holding his LAST free beer.
Second place archery goes to Roger Dutton with another great buck. This guy is always associated with big bucks and bulls and is a great guy to talk hunting with.
Third place archery was won by Jim Algerio. Jim also is another person who is always killing or is associated with big animals. In addition, Jim is a very big archery fanatic and has helped countless people get into bow hunting. Thanks Jim for all you do for the world of bowhunting.
Next we move on to the rifle category. Prepare to have your eyes fall out of your head because the first place winner, Ken Bowler, put away one of the biggest Nevada bucks taken in years. The picture says more than I could ever say. The man holding the buck and accepting Ken's prize is named Leon and is Kens good friend. Ken was unable to make the event but Leon was gracious enough to bring in the rack and endure constant questioning about the buck. I'm sorry that I didn't get your last name Leon but thanks to you and Ken for sharing this great trophy. Ken will recieve the Weatherby Vanguard 30-06 that Leon is holding in the picture.
Second place winner in the rifle category was Matt Murry with this sweet buck!
Rifle third place winner was Greg Welch with another Nevada great!
We also gave a prize to the lady with the largest buck. Here we have Kathy Langdon with a buck that measures in the high 170's.
This by the way is Kathy's first buck. I can't wait to see how she follows up with her next buck!
We also like to give a prize to the youth with the smallest buck. This encourages everybody to bring thier bucks no matter how small or large it is and that having the biggest buck is not all that matters but each and every animal harvested is a true trophy. Here is Seth Alzugaray accepting his prize for the smallest youth buck. The smile on Seth's face made the whole contest worth while. Look at the smiles on the faces of the people behind Seth. Its funny how a kid's smile makes us all smile.
Next is the smallest buck taken by an adult. This winner recieves a mug to get free beer for a whole year also. The only difference is that his mug is small, ha ha. Congratulations to Robbie Hood who purposely went out to harvest the smallest buck in order to recieve this prize. This guy is a great conisuer of beer and will definitely put his mug to good use. Too bad he has a bad choice in clothing. The Steelers?
That concludes all of the winners of the Big Buck part of the contest. I wish I could post pictures of every single buck that was brought in because there was definitely many more awesome bucks at the contest. Don't go away because I'm going to post pictures of the bulls and some Monster Muley people that were present. fatrooster.
