Have you been out and seen the great work some of the Feds are doing? It sounds good. But its always a little nerve racking when the feds are involved...
Great news for mule deer! Definitely a win-win for on the ground habitat improvement projects that will potentially improve struggling mule deer herds across the Western US!
Several counties in our area joined collaborative effort and actually picked up a sizeable grant from the RMEF to improve elk habitat in areas with catastrophic wildfires.
Sources are certainly available to fund large projects that benefit wildlife in your particular area.
Great job MDF and MDF supporters!
A lot depends on the location and what native and invasive species are present before and after wildfires. Some areas may actually benefit from wildfires but some may have severe problems post fire.
Now the RMEF is in the timber contract and NEPA world? What about prescribed and manage fire? You say some wild things. That money would be better off with RMEF…
Meh every organization has issues. What’s wrong with logging? Do you use your hand to wipe your butt? Lesser of two evils…Now the RMEF is in the timber contract and NEPA world? What about prescribed and manage fire? You say some wild things.
No, logging is great. Setting up the sales on public land has to be done by the Feds. Putting the money in the land managers hands is the best bet.Meh every organization has issues. What’s wrong with logging? Do you use your hand to wipe your butt? Lesser of two evils…
Even more scary when the state is involved in public lands. It sounds good. But its always a little nerve racking when the feds are involved...
Everything is audited and public, there are no "cracks" which is exactly why these two government entities chose MDF to help fund projects in coordination with them.It would be great if the majority of funding goes directly to on the ground mule deer projects where it will make the most difference rather than disappearing in cracks.
Hey SS?
You Ever Watch The Wildlife Board Meetings/Voting?
BC With the RMEF Is Nothing More Than a YES Man!
Everything that I've Ever Seen Voted On or Recommended,BC Takes The Podium & Says:
The RMEF Agree's & Goes Along With All Recommendations!
HINT:
Not Everything Proposed & Recommended were The Right Things To Do!
A True YES MAN!
And I Bite With Truth!
As far as my other thread goes on the over/underpasses. The $20 million passed out of both committees it needed to, and was priority item 6 (so high priority). It needs to be funded by the legislature now, and signed by the Governor. Then there’s strong likelihood $60 million more will be funded via the Infrastructure bill and Utah will hopefully have $80 million in pocket for under passes, overpasses, fencing etc. gosh stuff is a long, complicated process.@slamdunk
What does this mean?
The overpasses are a great idea.
65 million builds a lot of overpasses. Is this something the money could be put towards?
Must be, I’ve never had to touch a sheet of drywall in my life ???Is their any chance SS is that smart?
But you've had to pay to have it done.Must be, I’ve never had to touch a sheet of drywall in my life ???
Yep cash to illegals. Ain’t no thing ?But you've had to pay to have it done.
Numerous projects over the next five years from habitat improvements, fences, fence removal, burns, guzzlers.@slamdunk

Nope.....not even a little bit.You mean "because I said so" won't work?
Simple. Look at the success in elk hunting opportunities. They continue to increase. They brought back elk to the eastern US increasing hunting opportunities. And they did this all with the reintroduction of the big bad wolf that scares all of you.Not trying to badger @SS!, but if you're making a statement that RMEF would have been a better fit for the money, explain why?
Is there any chance SS baited you with his RMEF post? JW…
Has mule deer hunting in Utah and the west improved since MDF & SFW got a foot hold? Slam dunk is spot on. We continue to give more and more money to organizations like MDF & SFW yet our deer herds continue to shrink. We are selling our resources aka 200 tags in the name of conservation yet mule deer herds continue to shrink across the west. This has been going on since the inception of MDF & SFW yet we as sportsman continue to allow it. I'm aware that MDF & SFW are conducting conservation projects. I've seen them, yet they are not yielding results. I remember a time when SFW & MDF really pushed for memberships to fund their organizations. That is until the banquet's, and public tags started paying the way.
No, my comment was a bit more of a generality. In my line of work, federal money can, and usually does, come with a lot of strings attached he'd. Sometimes negatively, other times, just sort of annoyingly. That's all...Have you been out and seen the great work some of the Feds are doing?
If over harvesting deer during November has decimated those herds, there must also be excessive doe permits as well. There's a major difference between habitat management with improvement projects and the actual management of hunters and wildlife.
As a prime example, the CPW has totally screwed mule deer here in Colorado with their poor deer management scheme of increasing tag numbers with rut rifle season dates.
Obviously it helps to have both for healthy deer and deer numbers.
100%You are absolutely correct that too many doe tags impacts deer numbers. Having a stable, healthy doe population is pretty crucial.
If we continue a couple more years of wetter than normal years in both winter and summer, we'll see a solid uptick across the western deer states.I think overpasses and underpasses and everything can help. I say we keep doing as much as we can. However, I think the game changer with deer is mother nature. I would say knock the elk herds down in my state to about 30% of what they are, but then there wouldn't be enough elk tags, and people would then be after the mule deer tags?. It's a tough situation.
AgreeIf we continue a couple more years of wetter than normal years in both winter and summer, we'll see a solid uptick across the western deer states.
Getting winter range habitat healthy again would be an absolute game changer.
refer to post #44I’m a skeptic, but after seeing how the government spends money in construction projects and how many billions we have sent to the first son’s favorite country while our own boarder and Mauai are a mess, it’s hard to be too excited about this. Feels like more government sponsored money laundering.
Too bad the Vaccine they shoved up everyones A** does not have its own NEPA so we could find out the "cumulative impacts" it will have in the future. Two or Three things that are VERY HARD to believe in right now is (The Government) (The Mule Deer Foundation) and (BS HEADLINES) like this one e.g. ($65 Million Dollar Partnership Blah - Blah - Blah) #whateverPartnering allows for leveraging funding and resources. There is ample grant funding opportunities out there right now.️ ?
The more active management we are doing on the ground, the better.
The biggest problem with working on federal lands is not working with the federal government, it's getting through the NEPA process. The current administration made it so "cumulative impacts" have to be analyzed...which can add years to the NEPA process and opens more doors for potential litigation. If they can partner and do the work as categorical exclusions, that would be ideal.
Ya~ Check out the work they did in Provo a week or two on a 75 year old man- They are killiing it! Literally......Have you been out and seen the great work some of the Feds are doing?
What you baiting him with?Well!
