I hunted 061/071 for bulls in 2016. I hunted early in the season and was able to find elk pretty easily. My daughter and I have cow tags this year. We're not going to make it out that way until mid December to hunt.
I'm curious about the elk migration patterns. I thought I had read that the elk migrate north towards ID and the Bruneau River as the season goes on. Am I remembering correctly?
I was planning on setting up camp in the lower 1/3 of 061 solely based on the distance from my home, time we have to hunt and the elevation of the general area. I'm starting to think that coming in from the ID side may be the better decision though since the elevation is similar and that may generally be where the elk are in December. Criticism/advice on this?
In 2016, I camped near Merritt Mountain on advice from a fellow MM'er. The spot was a 10 for camping, but depending on weather, may not be the best area for a mid December hunt.
Any info on elk migration habits for 061/071 would be cherished and appreciated! Generally, my hunting pattern for late cow elk hunts is to get down low and find the herd.
