015 nevada

I drew a rifle deer tag for 015 it's a late hunt Dec 11 to Jan 1 I am fairly familiar with the area was wondering if anyone has had that tag before and has any info to help

Nice buck, buckhorn. I've heard from a few people that the unit is not what it used to be. Does anybody have opinions on why (tag numbers, elk encroachment, habitat, ..)? Just curious what people are thinking. Is it the same story on 114?

It's not elk encroachment because there really are no elk in western Nevada. A major cause of deer decline is the Horse encroachment. They have pretty much totally ruined the habitat for the deer . Also there have been a lot of fires and that is caused mostly by the prolonged drought we've had in the area. There have been a lot of fires on the California side and that has pushed all the Lions over to Nevada And they have eaten most of the deer in what habitat there was left.
The last time we drew a tag there was in 2015 and after scouting it very hard and all our honey holes we couldn't find anything and just returned the tag. I haven't considered applying for it since.
As far as 114 goes that's clear over on the Utah border and not sure why you're comparing that with 015 unless you mean 014.

I agree about the horses they seem to be everywhere in 015, just spent the weekend scouting for antelope everywhere there is water there is horses. My question is BLM or the state going to do anything about this problem?

Not nearly the unit that it was 10 years ago
Lots of lions in that unit hurting the deer, thanks to the lion factory California, next door.

^^^^^^^
Exactly, been trapping and bird hunting this unit for awhile. Lions are the main problem.

I spent 8 days hunting there this past season. I would say the loss of bitterbrush to fire and the subsequent cheatgrass infestation coupled with horses are the main two causes of the decline. Saw very few deer including a couple small bucks. Tough hunt. It was disappointing I'd been wanting to hunt there for a long time.

That unit has gone way down hill well before the fires and cheat grass

Man I saw two great deer while antelope hunting last year one was an easy 180 huge 4 point snot 28 wide the other was no slouch 25 wide nice 4 point. That was early and the unit had plenty of water at that time due to 16-17 winter. Good luck pm me
