Unit 47 Youth Buck Tag

Been absent from this forum for a few years. Decided to jump back in and share my excitement for the upcoming season. I once again did not draw any hunts so I will be hunting OTC once again. My 13-year-old son on the other hand drew a Unit 47 Youth tag. His cousin that is his same age had the same buck tag last year. Due to football, we did not have a lot of time to spend in that unit and only hunted 3 days. This year they will both have tags in their pocket as my nephew drew a doe tag in the same unit this year. I want to be clear I am not resurfacing on the forum looking for advice on the unit. Just excited to take my son out on his first hunt where he will be the one with the tag.

Sounds fun. My son drew a 47 tag also. He is excited. Going to go out in August to take a look around for a long weekend. Going to hunt the last week of the season. HT, I’ll let you know what we see, we should exchange some notes. Critter

My elk season is now over, and my 13-year-old has patiently been waiting for his turn. Finished sighting in his rifle last night and we will get one more practice session this week. Then it's time to hit the unit for the opener on Saturday. Getting super anxious and excited. I hope we can find him an opportunity at a buck. This will be his first season with a tag in his pocket.

Good luck. My son also drew the 47 tag this year. We took a quick scouting trip this summer. Saw a couple of small bucks and
a lot of antelope. Should be a fun hunt.

Got out for opening weekend. My nephew has a doe tag in the same unit. We got out of town much later than I wanted and had to turn around because my nephew forgot his tag at home. Ended up getting to the unit at 11:30pm and finally got to lay down around 1:00am. Got up at 5:15 and headed to a spot I had in mind to glass a pretty nice-looking draw. At first light we saw several groups of does and a couple forkys. Watched them bead down and we gave my son the choice if he wanted to try and get within shooting distance of the forkys. He opted to let his cousin try and take one of the does. My son and I stayed put while my brother and his son moved in on the bedded deer. They got within 200 yards and the deer got up out of their beds. They stayed put and milled around for 10-15 minutes but my nephew, it being his first time, had a really hard time finding the deer in his scope. The deer eventually worked their way out of sight and then got spooked by something before they could get back into distance. Did not find any deer the rest of the weekend. We will be back up for another try in a few weeks.

First of all, wanted to thank the couple people on this forum that reached out with on this hunt. I love the support that true sportsman give to the future of the sport.
Our crew headed out Wednesday evening last week and hunted for 3 days. I am not sure if it is a bad year or if we just truly suck at finding deer. In 3 days, we saw a total of about 20-25 deer 4 of them being small forkys. Everything we got into my son's comfortable range to shoot was very skittish and we never got a shot at any of them. We had quite a bit of intel on the unit on where others had seen deer frequently, so I figured we had a pretty good chance of success. Another batch of tag soup for us. Not that it's all about filling tag. We still had fun and made some lifelong memories. Wishing a would have taken a few more pictures but I got a few. My boy loves a good mountain nap after a early morning hike and glassing session.
