Hello guys, it’s been well over 35 years since I’ve shot either one of these guns… I don’t even remember what powder I use back then although I know it was 90 g by volume… I have a muzzleloader antelope tag and I’m going to use one of the two guns to hunt with…

What powder you guys recommend I start trying?

Back when I shot my prehistoric front stuffer, I used Triple-7. I also have a can of Pyrodex, so I must have used that too.

You got caps for that thing? Let me know if you need any of that stuff. Might take me a minute to find it. :ROFLMAO:

If I had half your $, I’d buy a modern $400 gun that used 209’s and BH 209. You’ll still have enough money for beer to sight it in.:)

Somewhere around here I have caps, like you I just have to find them…😳 if not I’ll be calling…🤣

Trust me, the modern front stuffer will be along for the ride…😁

75-85 (90??) grains 777 2F and a squat conical will be in the zone.

100 grains and a roundball should do the job too.

No vote on the pyrodex, too much corrosion.

Of course, black powder is always the historically suitable option.

Agreed. Those slower twist barrels won’t like a real long (heavy) bullet.

I shoot 90gr of 2F triple seven out of my 54 cal Lyman GPR percussion gun with good results out to 100 yards. I’m shooting patched round balls. Never had a hang fire. My GPR has the Lyman tang peep sight, it really helps. Killed a moose and two elk with that setup.

What states the Antelope?

Thats the ticket, I'll be getting these for sure...
Start at 75grains I’d be surprised if you need to go over 85. Conicals are heavy locomotives, Just hit the target at any speed and its done for. Push too hard and they can lose control. If accuracy diminishes, gun sounds less “sharp” and you are cleaning lots of lead particles on your patch, you’ve blown past your exit.

I Always Used GOEX 3fff In The Old SmokePole!

Where You Finding Any Of The BLACK NASTY elkantlers?

Those old style muzzleloaders need real blackpowder. If you use pyrodex or 777 or other powders they will work, but you will get hang fires.
I use ff or fff goex BP in my Lyman GPs.

And this is a full 1lb keg. ;)

I'm Amazed You Can Still Buy The GOEX!

Several Years Ago When I Tried Finding Some I Couldn't Find It Anywhere!

Thanks!

I should probably use your Hawken, she’s a killer…
Tikka,
I have some real BP I could spare, I know I have some 3 and 4F, not sure if I have any 2F.
I also have some #11’s I could help you with.
It is all bundled up with a custom built 12 gauge muzzy shotgun if you or anyone else is interested?
$500 or trade for Ruger .357.
Or someone give me an 870 and a little cash.
Or I give gun and a little cash for an AR.
Or….

Thanks though

I Don't Imagine It Would Group Slugs Too Well?

I always used pyrodex in my .54 hawken. Killed an elk and a deer with it. Shot the elk with a heavy buffalo bullet. 460 grains if I remember correctly. That load would give you a headache after a few shots.

Changed to a Barnes Expander Mz for my deer hunt. That load was much more pleasurable to shoot.

Both loads killed like lightning.

Oh yeah, on the Williams sight, are you struggling with far sightedness or something else about it?

I’m far sighted now days and think I’m going to have to use a red dot from here on out. I can’t read a menu or my phone without readers.

Those heavy TC, I want to say 395gr? Been awhile for me too. With FFF pistol and #11 cci, for some reason the rem caps were loose on my nipple.

I'd been toying with breaking mine out to celebrate open sights

Tikka, I’m waiting on a pronghorn picture to show up here. Hope you use the Lyman…….. it’s has that more “Period” look than the TC Renegade.

You’ve inspired me……. I’ll be packing my Kentucky Flintlock this year during both Muzzleloader and the Any Weapon Hunt. But for a fresh liver, I don’t think I’d even carry a weapon again this year. I do loves them deer livers, ya know!

2lumpy, I’m a hoping to post one here… It’s been slim pickings on the scouting so far, so who knows I may just post my tag soup picture… I sure hope not, whatever the case, I’m going to enjoy every minute of it…

HANG TOUGH Tikka!

Best Of Luck!

2ff and a round ball, resulting in this… I had a great time, wished it was a little cooler… @2lumpy here is my report…

Nice job with a traditional muzzy. I assume it was in Utah. Since Utah has the muzzy hunt after the rifle hunt, were the bucks very skittish? And did you feel there were still enough big bucks around after the rifle season?
Thanks
Bill

Man of your word Tikka, I appreciate that, for sure. Congrats on a beautiful pronghorn. It’s it little extra special when you get it done with the muzzleloader too. Very happy you got’ter done.

I’ve been chasing mule deer with my flintlock for the last week. I’m pathetic when it comes to sealing the deal, Lord knows, I’ve blown plenty of opportunities.

But I’ve had a great timing failing to notch my tag.

Hot Ain't Even The Word Tikka!

Late Afternoons In The High Country Is Hotter This Year Than I've Ever Seen It!

And Elk Season Starts Tomorrow!

I Wonder How Many Will SPOIL?

Nice lope Tikka!
For black powder, I like the Swiss brand. It is more expensive than GOEX or Schutzen, but it is powerful black powder and it lights easy with percussion caps or in a flintlock.
