I have 2 buddies that have lived there for over 20 years and still do... they farm there. His son and him both had tags last year, they killed a couple small 4 points. Said they couldnt find anything bigger. He has a few on his wall from the pre fire days that are dandy's. They cat hunt the **** out of it and are all over those mountains during chukar season. They dont see anywhere those numbers anymore. Last time I hunted it was 4 years ago...very hard pressed to find a true mature buck. Mostly dinks. Last time it was decent was before the big fires...which I was there the year it burned. I was actually in house creek drainage when lightning stared the damn fire on the ridge. We barely got my quad out. That was the last year that area was good. We chased bucks around all archery... killed a 25" 4x4 down low. Yes there are an occasional good one, but nothing even remotely close to pre fire. Now if your lucky enough to hunt the Kings river ranch...that's a different story. I had the landowner tag about 12 years ago and saw the biggest buck Ide ever seen. Well over 30", heavy and fricking points I couldnt count at 1000 yards. I was out gunned at the time. Tried to sneak in but to many eyes and he busted me, was trying to get to 500 at least. Haunts my dreams today.
If you want just a buck, youll get an opportunity Im sure if you hunt. If you want a mature buck...hunt your ass off, in before dark..out after dark all day. Good luck beating the guides with several guys spotting deer for high paid clients.
