I'd put money on you coming outa there with a dandy.Burned 14 points on unit 7. Might regret it but I'll give it hell.
Thank you! It will most likely be my only September tag so I can put some time into it.I'd put money on you that come outa there with a dandy.
Thats a tag I have my eye on burning my points on. Can't wait to hear how it goes.Drew 62-1 Lets do it!
I hunted there twice over a decade ago - archery and rifle, I am happy to help. Great tag, lots of elk and huge bulls.Drew 62-1 Lets do it!
It's a good hunt. I drew it when I lived in Glendo. I got a 5x6 during the rifle, but on private property. It was a friends ranch that they sold recently. I found elk on public lands during archery season almost every day, but I struggled to find them during the rifle. It was my first time hunting elk and I messed up more times than I care to admit. I've also attached a photo of the bull I couldn't close on during archery. Good luck.Burned 14 points on unit 7. Might regret it but I'll give it hell.
Yeah, I was just curious how much it jumped this year with all the chatter about dumping points, price increases, etc2022 data was 3 pts on avg, 4-5 may be realistic
GF homepage has your answers.Yeah, I was just curious how much it jumped this year with all the chatter about dumping points, price increases, etc
That is a good hunt. One of my sons had the tag a couple years ago. We saw some good bulls. Saw lots of bears too. He arrowed a good bull on the second to last day of the archery season.Drew 62-1 Lets do it!
Neither regular or special was 100% at 4 points this year. In the regular priced draw, I think you are 2-3 years away from a guaranteed general tag.anybody have an idea on how many it took for a general tag this year? We are sitting on 3 points and figure we probably have a good 2 years to go
I was told by a buddy who looked up the odds that with my 4 NR points going in, I had a 9% chance at drawing the general tag....which I did. I did not go special as I thought it was a guarantee with 4. Lucky...Neither regular or special was 100% at 4 points this year. I bet you'd have a good chance of drawing a general in the special draw next year with the $2,000 price.anybody have an idea on how many it took for a general tag this year? We are sitting on 3 points and figure we probably have a good 2 years to go
You might be right but I figured he is about 1 point behind with having 4 going into the 2024 drawing. I was thinking 6 in 2026 would likely draw but I wasn't accounting for the probable jump next year. Sad to think it will soon be a 10 point tag. You're a lot more than 2-3 in the Regular.
And how many peeps are going to start paying the $1900 for special? That is craziness. You might be right but I figured he is about 1 point behind with having 4 going into the 2024 drawing. My guess is they have zero trouble selling out of those higher priced tags. Plenty will be waiting in line but I do think the line will be slightly shorter. And how many peeps are going to start paying the $1900 for special? That is craziness.
The wealthy guys that can afford to go guided on a continual basis won't even batt an eye at the increased cost. The WOGA will be happy that their clients will now have better odds of getting tags on more frequent basis. My guess is they have zero trouble selling out of those higher priced tags. You won't find many elk or deer out there.....just fyi.40% of the special tags go to the random draw and I'll take my odds at 3 out of the last 4 years with jack for points
if the price goes up to $2k I'll check out and go sailing the high seas.

I have some friends that have 30000 acres there . They’re not seeing the quality bulls they tell me .Burned 14 points on unit 7. Might regret it but I'll give it hell.
Sy told me himself that they (Outfitters Association) pushed for the higher fee's for that exact reason. I think there'll still be plenty of DIY guys who'll pay up as well. The wealthy guys that can afford to go guided on a continual basis won't even batt an eye at the increased cost. Quality has gone down a touch according some friends I know but they are still consistently taking 300" bulls with the occasional 330+. It is still a great hunt. The same genetics are there so if a guy can find an older bull...I have some friends that have 30000 acres there . They’re not seeing the quality bulls they tell me .

I've got a buddy from Torrington who hunts it when he can draw. He drew it two consecutive years maybe 4-5 years ago and shot two slammers. A gorgeous, tight, long beamed monster that scored 360ish, and a not nearly so impressive classic frame that scored 370.Quality has gone down a touch according some friends I know but they are still consistently taking 300" bulls with the occasional 330+. Ain't that truth for some of us!I don’t have super high expectations. I’m going to scout it hard and have fun. Elk are just something to chase while I’m waiting for deer season to start.
Let me know if you have any questions about 3838-1, no more freaking points game for me..
Sorry, was referring to the general tags, but it as you point out actually 25% not 40% for both spec and reg on the random side40% of the LQ tags go to the special draw and 25% of those go to random.
This is a very accurate assessment. Unfortunately the G&F knows how to bring down quality, but not overall herd numbers. Same exact thing going on in other LQ areas.Area 7 has been on a downhill slide for a couple of decades. Thousands of licenses and months and months of seasons have taken a toll. With limited public ground and hunters that are now more serious about getting solid bulls, it is just not as good as it was. That said, it is good country and there are still some great bulls out there.
