Took my son to the local archery shop to see what he needs . He shot a Browning ( cannot remember which bow ) but has an 18" draw and goes from25-40 pound pull he shot it well problem is at 279 + tax it is a bit much for me but I want him to find something he can shoot for a few years . what is out there that is more affordable ( preferably under 200 ) that is good equipment . He is 7 years old and abolutely loves to shoot.
Had him pull 28 pounds but it was a bit much and I felt 25#m, is his max at this time .
Thanks for the help.
Also what have you guys had better luck with the youngsters
Glove
Tab
Rollers
or whatever ....

He has just been using his fingers . He shot about 20-25 times and his fingers started to hurt a little ( he still wanted to shoot :) ).

Both my girls started with a golden eagle and then moved up. My older daughter shot a hoyt and now my younger one shoots it. I heard that Mathews has some great youth bows that grow with the kid. It was a bit heavy for my younger one , just seemed like it was too long for here axle to axle.Bowtech used to have agreat youth bow but it 's also around that 279.00 area. Look over at Cabelas , I think theres some pretty good youth bows for a bit less, but keep your local bowshop in mind. Let them know what your looking for and hopefully they can help you out as these are also the guys/girls you'll be going to for business. I guess what I'm trying to say is there are a bunch of options , no matter your budget. Used bows are hard to buy into for myself, but a youth bow is sometimes shot very little, so you may also look at some used youth bows....NM

My son is now 5,and i bought him a mathews genesis he loves it. He can also grow into it for years to come. Its alot of bang for your buck.

Thank you all for your advise , He has been saving up and I told him I would meet him half way he has 70 dollars saved so I think he has a ways to go.

My daughter uses a Darton RangerII (I think it is a II). It is what the range sells and he services it. Each year he adjusts it for free (length of pull and etc). As far as I can tell, it isn't any better or worse than anyothers. It is sort of a Remington, Savage, Colt, MArlin, issue...it doesn't really matter. You are going to pay atleast $200 for a real bow. Look for a package deal.

BUT, BUT, buy what your local shop sells, but make sure he will do adjustments on it for free.

That sounds a bit steep, but if you don't have another range in the area, that can give a better deal, go w/it. See what he'll through in w/it.

Thanks stinky , the package deal is good I just do not have that kind of money so we are both saving up.

Last year I bought my boy (now 9) a Diamond "EDGE" by Bowtech. Best investment in his hunting future I have made so far. This bow is so much smoother and accurate than his last $125.00 (toy) bow; and he LOVES shooting it. I am amazed at how much more he shoots with this bow than he used to. And of course, since he is shooting more, his groups are getting better, and he gets so jazzed that his groups are getting tighter that he wants to shoot more!
This bow is a little more expensive than the bows you are talking about, but is very 'adjustable' as your kid grows. When he/she grows out of the limbs on the bow, for about $30.00 you can buy new limbs; up to 50-55 lbs I believe. He will be shooting this bow for years to come. Though it may be tough to swallow the initial investment, this route will cost less in the long run; For a mere $60.00, I can upgrade him TWICE, all the way up to a 55 lb bow.
By the way, my boy shoots a tornado tru-bal release....same as I do.
Here is a pic of my boy with a 12 shot group at 20 yds... not bad for a 9 yr old eh! (proud smile)

By the way,
I live in UT.
There are a lot of UTARDS that live here.
I have also seen quite a few WYOMORONS, NEVADUHNS, COLORADORKS, ID-IOTS and AIRHEADZONANS in my travels.

Both my boy's have shot the Matthews Genisis, my 6yr old is still sooting the Genisis and will shoot it probably another year or two, depending on how much he grows. I just bought my 9yr old a Bear Odyssey II and the guy told me he could shoot this bow until he was about 11 or 12 yrs old. I REALLY like the Matthews Genisis, but if your looking for a bigger bow then look at the Bear Odyssey II. I looked at alot of bows and I choose this one because I can adjust the draw length myself bu just moving a couple of screws. But the Genisis did it's job well, both my boy's shot these bows a long time and they shoot well. The only reason I went to the Bear is because my boy out grew the Matthews.

Godd luck,

You might want to take a look at the Whisper creek youth bows. A friend of mine just bought both of his boys one of these for Christmas. They were well built and pretty cool, looked a lot like dad's bow. I think they ran about $165.00 and were pretty adjustable for draw length and weight.

The Genesis is also a great youth bow, no letoff but very adjustable, adults can actually shoot it.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-14-08 AT 07:03PM (MST)[p]Thanks again guys, so far we are just going to buck up and save for this browning unless something better for the price comes up . The setup from the local shop comes with a quiver free adjustments will go up to 40 pounds withought changing limbs cannot remember what type of sights it is but I liked them a whisker biscuit rest I think that is it plus he gets time in the 3D tunnel and shooting time in the shop . All for the 275$
I think I will make him save to 100$ and then take up the slack , I had no Idea what a decent bow for him was going to cost.
Nice pictures by the way of your boy and what poundage is he shooting?
