A conclusion is the place where you got tired of thinking.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-07-09 AT 02:34AM (MST)[p]I have two that get duel use;

Semi custom Rem 700 with pac-nor 25" stainless match grade #3 barrel in .280 ackly imp. Original stock and nicely adjusted trigger, a flat shooting thumper!

Winchester Mod 70 stainless synthetic stocked .270WSM, another reach out and touch them shooter!

Both guns have Burris Signature series 4x12 scopes and have the energy to kill way farther than i'm going to shoot yet are "easy" on the shoulder. My comfortable range on a game animal is about 500 yds. I'm shooting hot 140 and 150 grain loadings through each of them and would not feel under gunned for anything in North America except the big bears.

I have two primary hunting rifles but I only seem to hunt with my old reliable as I cannot seem to warm up to the newer of the rwo.

The one I always have hunted with is a pre-64 Winchester model 70 in .270 that was built the same year I was (1951) that I got for my 12th birthday, Still have the box, manual, hang tags, etc). I have made one change to it with a Timney trigger. It has a Leupold vari-x III 3.5-10 scope, Buehler two piece scope mounts. I used to load for it but the past 4-5 years I have been shooting factory ammo and it seems to really like Hornady light mags, 130gr. interbond bullets. The rifle shoots consistant and is extremley accurate. I have killed deer out to 400+ yards and the rifle has never had a failure of any kind.

My other rifle is a Remington model 700 stainless chambered in .300 Ultra Mag, reworked trigger, KDF brake, Buehler two piece bases, Leupold VX-3L 6-20x56 long range scope.
I shoot Remington factory ammo 180gr Swift Sirocco ammo and the rifle shoots amazing but I have never warmed up to it. I have had the rifle for 10 years and have yet to kill anything other than paper or cans with it.

Can't seem to get away from my model 70 for hunting and I cannot find a compelling reason why I should change. I suppose the .300 rum was one of those "had to have it" things.

300 WSM, Leupold 3.5-10X40, 168gr Barnes TTSX
270 WSM, Leupold 3.5-10X40, 130gr Barnes TTSX
Light guns that shoot pretty well for factory rifles.
Also have TC and Knight muzzys. Knight has peep sights and shoots conicals. And I'm setting the Omega up with a scope and sabbots.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-07-09 AT 12:38PM (MST)[p]I mostly hunt elk now so the gun I like best is a Browning A bolt stainless stalker with a Bausch and Lomb 3-9 scope and I use 180 grain Sciroccos for amo. 300 Win. Mag.

Does archery count???

Hoyt Ultrmag.
Beman Hawk ICS 340 carbons.
Muzzy 100 grain broadheads.
Truball release.

I also have a Ruger M77 stainless/synthetic 300.
I shoot fast and deadly ##### in that.

Rem. 700 chambered in .338 R.U.M. topped with a leupold VXIII in 3.5-10x40. I shoot 200 grain accubonds custom loaded from Nosler. I shoot whitetail, mule deer and elk with this gun. I had a muzzle break put on to calm the recoil a bit and had the trigger set to 3 pounds. I was 18 when I bought it and didn't fully realize what I was buying at the time but I am now 27 and this gun has become my baby and I will shoot it until I am to old to handle the recoil.

At my age now, I have lot's of choices.

Probably too many. I can pretty much shoot whatever I want.

My favorite....and very first, "big rifle", is an Eddystone Enfield, 30-06.

A retrofit sniper model, with a Bausch & Lomb BalVar 2.5 x 7 scope, with quick release mounts...external adjusted. Military version.

It was sporterized and restocked, in California black walnut, by my Grandfather, Ralph Bell, a semi famous gunsmith in his day.

I recieved it for Christmas, 1958.

It is still my favorite rifle ever, and to this day, I can smell my Grandfather's pipe tobacco in the air, every time I pick it up. I know, you all didn't need THAT information.

My uncle Ted used it in Korea and "bought" it from the Army when he was discharged in '55.

This will make you giggle. Until about 1997, the only thing this rifle had ever fired (by me) was, military surplus AP rounds that we had pulled the bullets out of and replaced with 165gr Sierra Boattails. Never even scaled the powder.

I probably graduated high school with 500 rounds of that stuff.

Nickman I liked your story...I'm kinda like you...have shot different bucks with a lot of different rifles..5 even with a .50 Hawken and they weren't even muzzleloader tags. If I had to give up all my guns and got to keep one.....it would be my .220 Swift wherever I point it ...its hittin there..I killed a buck with it too...

Started using an old Sako bolt action in .308 topped with a 4x Leupold and Rem 700 in .308 with a 3-7x Leupold. Then I got a Winchester 70 Lightweight in .243 I used for deer and varmints for many years topped with a 3-9 vxII. I recently got a .338 Federal in a Ruger M77 stainless. I have yet to get a scope but I'm sure it will be a Leupold. With the .308's, I'd use Factory Winchester or Rem 150 grain soft points on deer and 180 grains on elk. In the .243 I use 100 grain factory Win, Federal, or Rem soft points. The only ammunition I ever had a problem with was using Hornady with my .243 the bullets would fragment. Switched back to the plain old Rem and never had a problem. I'm excited to try out the new .338 Federal and see how that cartridge performs.

Geez........some of you guys have more invested in rifles and optics than I do in 4x4 trucks!!!!

I would rather have 6, $600 rifles than just 1, $3600 rifle.....maybe you have 6, $3600 ones?

Not me.. I am too hard on rifles to spend a huge wad on one gun. besides I might be like the guy in NM that lost his rifle and... Well.. I have never lost one of my guns.. not sure how a guy does that.
