My buddy and I drew an archery tag for Colorado. It is a split hunt, some dates in Oct,late Nov. and late Dec. Evidently there is a gun hunt in between the Nov. and Dec. dates. It is unit 142, Pinyon Canyon. We know someone who hunted it during gun season several seasons back. I think for archery picking the right time to be there during the rut will be the key. Anyone have info they would like to share would be greatly appreciated. Not asking for specific honey hole info , more interested in timing info. Thanks in advance.

Jim, congrats on the tag. Man, are you sure that there are elk way over there? Never been to that unit, I'm sure you will get some help here. The rut should be over before your hunt starts in Oct. Maybe this hunt is better late if its a migration hunt. Are you waiting for a NM deer tag too? Good luck!! Ed F

Ed sorry on not being as clear as I should have been. This is a mule deer tag!!! Yes we are also waiting to hear on N.M. for the Jan. archery 2b tag and also put in for an archery N.M. tag as well. How about you did you put in for N.M. as well? Jim

Sorry about that. Lesson learned, never assume. Yeah, that is probably a good muley zone. Is there public land in that unit? A lot of the eastern zones are tied up with private. Oh yes I'm waiting for that 2b tag also. Good luck on the NM draw too. Ed F

Ed my buddy is the one who knows most about this unit. As I understand it, I think Pinyon Canyon is on some type of military property which is open for hunting, although you have to camp in a seperate designated area and have to check in and out.

I scouted that area a few years back myself and will tell ya what I know which isnt alot. We scouted early and found very few deer because it was so damn hot there. They were only visible for a few brief moments in the am and right before dark. I think its an awesome area but you really have your work cut out for ya. I think that area would be tough with a bow...big bucks though. Let me know what else I can help ya with. Gary

Gary thanks for the reply. I am hoping that with the rut temps will be down and daytime activity will increase We know it is pretty open plains type country so we need the rut to help us get within bow range. Again I think the timing of the hunt is crucial. When is the peak of the rut season in that area, if you know? Thanks Jim
