It's this time of the year again when we all think about what units to put in for. I'am a non res with max elk points I've put in for units 63/64 and 100 and 30/31 in the past. This year I'am looking into unit 16. I've been on the wyoming website and found alittle info on it. I was looking to see if anybody has info on it etc (public access, hunting pressure, quality of the elk, bow vs rifle ). The website said good chance at taking a mature elk. I've never been in this unit but plan on calling the regional office to gather up as much info as I can. Just wanted to see if anybody would be willing to give up some help ? Thanks, Marc

Unit 16 sucks. I would put in for area 7. There isn't any big bulls in unit 16. Go with area 7. Area 7 Area 7 Area 7

Area 7 Area 7 Area 7

Yer getting a snow job. 16 has lot's of quality animals. My cousin and his son drew that tag last season and saw a fair number of 300 class bulls during the archery season. They ended up whacking a 5x5 and a good 6x6 during the rifle hunt. Area 7 has more elk, more big bulls and more private ground than 16. Area 19 is probably the best archery area for elk in central Wyoming if that's yer thing...

I am in the process of moving to Wyoming, building a house in Cheyenne. Does anybody have any thoughts on which unit would be a better archery elk hunt 24 or 16. I have good odds at both as a non-resident and need to use my points in the next 2 years. I live near 16 and wondered if anybody had any ideas?

I have hunted in unit 16 ,but not for elk.I have saw some nice elk taken in the Shirley Mountains. This year I am thinking of applying as a nonresident myself.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-11-09 AT 08:40AM (MST)[p]I have decided to put in for a Unit 16 cow tag.
The cost of a bull tag and the draw odds ,just don't think it's worth the difference in price.
Last year they only gave 8 Non resident private land reduced price cow tags ,so the odds of drawing may not be to good.

What is the access like in the Shirley Mts? I know I can probably figure out the answer to my question by ordering maps, but on-the-gound intel is a lot better.
