Wyoming Elk area 91

I'm thinking of planning an Elk hunt for area 91 in 08. Can anyone tell me anything at all about that area? I spoke with a G&F biologist and he said that there's really not a lot of Elk in 91. He also said that public access is difficult because of the steep terrain and the private land in Star Valley. Any info at all would be great. Thank you very much.

That F&G Bio. gave you the right scoop, better think about somewhere else. Only place I can think off hand out of Afton is up the trail head towards Swift Creek. But without horses it will be a long hike to the decent area up there. An awesome sight though on top.

I've hunted unit 91 six times. We had great success for the first four years but saw no elk (or any sign) the last two. Went up Strawberry Creek to McDougal Pass last October and didn't even cut an elk track. I spoke with other hunters who also had great hunts one year and terrible hunts other years. Not a lot of elk, but when you find them, you will usually see a decent sized herd. If you still want to hunt the area (usually has leftover limited-quota tags), I could give you a few areas to check out. Send me a pm and I'd be glad to point you in a few directions.

I've been in there. There are a few elk, but you need to know they get hunted hard! You also need to know that there is a limited entry 91 tag but the unit is open to the general season as well, so you really have way more competition than you might think from just looking at the proc. Like anywhere, there is probably a decent bull or two in there, but in my opinion there are better places to hunt when dropping $600 on a non-res tag. Not steering you away, just giving you facts.

I grew up hunting that area and areas around there and I have to agree with the other post's. Elk #s are down, if you hunt hard you can find Elk, you can get away from people as well, but for the Non-resident tag price, $600+ there are better states, areas.

I got similar info from the biologist about 92 this year. The biologist was high on 92 bout 5 years ago and thats where I've been applying. Checked with him again this year and he turned me off of it. Same general area.
