Wyoming Deer Area 117

Anyone ever hunted this unit? I would appreciate any feedback you can give. Thanks

If you have drawn this tag you are very lucky. This is one of the best high country deer tags around. Scout in August at timber line in the Eloner/Anderson Creek drainage. Pack in during season to below timber line. Only 50 tags given out this year so there won't be any deer hunter pressure. Upper Jack Creek would be another good place to scout and check out. Use the Jack Creek trailhead for access point - good corrals and maintained trail systems. Recent fires in this area will make antler growth "huge" this year.

We hunted 61 for elk a few years ago and never saw a buck deer. Was talking to a biologist up there about it. He said the herd numbers for deer are on the low side so they keep the tags low. He said when they do winter surveys they find some huge bucks, but he said they're tough to find during hunting season. If you look at Bob Sundeens outfitter website, (he's one of the few who outfit's that country), you'll see his wilderness deer hunts are 10 days long and he doesn't have any pictures of harvested deer. I think if yer looking for a hog in the wilderness, I'd plan on being up there for awhile, both before and after the season opens...

Does anyone know the name of the biologist responsible for this unit? Thanks

That would be Doug McWhorter in the Cody G&F office. There are plenty of big bucks in the area - you just have to work extremely hard for them.
