Wyo unit 58 or 61 type2

Hello guys, I'm not new to this forum just haven't posted for a while. My son and I have max elk pts in Wyo and are undecided whether to put in for unit 58 or a 61-2 tag. We've been applying for units out of the bear zone the last few years, but the odds are tough to draw. Not real crazy about hunting with the grizzlys but we will deal with it, I'm told there are bear in both units. We're both in good shape and not afraid to get away from the roads, would be self-guided and rifle hunting. Any info would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

I don't believe trespass permits on the Hoodoo are an option anymore, which makes 58 not as appealing as it once was. I think 61 is going to be tough to access and it has lots of wilderness which will stop you. not positive on that though .

With max points you're in a position to draw a tag of a lifetime in the late Cody hunts nobody else can apply for. the best ones will require an outfitter, if that's an option at all don't even consider anything else.

As of 2017 the Hoodoo sold trespass permits for bulls. 61-2 is tough to access if it snows unless you have access to private.

The Hoodoo sells permits but they cut it off for the late season don't they? that's what they did last year anyway, so I heard.

58 is a good hunt either way, but not worth max points in my opinion.

Thanks for the info guys. We would like to do a late hunt around Cody but hiring an outfitter unfortunately isn't in the cards for us. Which unit or units are the late hunts in and can they be hunted without a guide? I'm told the Hoodoo ranch in 58 charges 1000.00 for a trespass fee which I think we could afford, but I haven't called them yet.

Just go into the G&F website and you can click on last years hunting regulations and see what units have the late seasons for elk after looking at the elk unit map in that same section for the areas around Cody.

58 and 54 are about it for a NR DIY hunt I think. neither are in the same class as 56 and 59 but those will require an outfitter.

I would rather have max points than any tag other than those two personally. if you think there is any chance you might be able to afford it down the road I'd hold on. just my opinion others may vary.

Be sure to verify the hunt dates on the Hoodoo before you pull the trigger. unless something has changed you can't hunt it in the late season.

And I'd see what that trespass fee in 58 does for you. You might be stuck parking 2 miles down the hill while the ranch guys drive right past as you schlog up the hill in 2' of snow.
I had a cow tag there and the guy at the ford garage laughed at me when I told him I had a 58 tag; "didn't see an elk track did ya?"
