wyo elk draw

quick question, i have never put in for elk in wyo, i currently have 4 points , if i apply for a tag with the preference point option does that give me 5 points going into the draw ? If yes are there other states that offer this option?? Thanks

No, the point you buy in WY isn't used in the draw until the following year. If you have 4 now and apply that's what will be used in the draw next month.

Ok Thanks, i thought if you drew a tag, the following year you would have zero points going into the next years draw,

That is correct. and they refund you your preference point fee for this year because you didn't get one.

If you draw your first choice, you lose all your points and if you applied for a point during the application period that point money is refunded. If you don't draw your first choice, then your points go to the following year, but you can only buy one point per year per species.
