LAST EDITED ON Sep-20-06 AT 03:48PM (MST)[p]I had the pleasure of introducing a friend of mine to antelope hunting this week, and we had a blast! We both scored on great massive 'lopes at yardage that is just sickening to believe.

We found Lori's after looking at all kinds of bucks, but when his head popped up out of the sage, I knew he was a keeper. At her shot, the 'lope just kind of wandered off. We thought she'd missed, until he did the antelope death-flip. She is just tickled pink with her first antelope!

We then spent the next day glassing bucks til our eyes hurt. As Lori put it, we were 'antelope shopping'. This area had so many nice bucks that we really were shopping. We saw some with mass, but no length, prongs but no mass, some freaks that wouldn't stand still long enough to look at-you name it! I spent more time field-scoring 'lopes than I have in years, and it was a blast.

However, when we drove back to a gate we needed to lock, we found this guy.....and I decided I absolutely needed to shoot him. I'm ashamed to admit that I missed him outright and he took off, but made a suicidal pause a short time later. No doubt about when a .280 hits a 'lope!

We spent the rest of our time exploring with a great sense of satisfaction, might I add.

A HUGE THANK YOU TO CABUCK FOR SHARING INFORMATION!!

I forgot to mention.....Lori and I are not big people, but these were the biggest bodied dang goats I've ever seen! Hers had a mule head!

Great story and photos Lisa. A big congrats to you and Lori, on a couple of really great speed goats.

Preddy!!!

I WON'T ASK IF YOU'VE EVER HAD LOPER FEVER,LOL!!!

JUST AS LONG AS YOU AIN'T SHOOTIN AT ME!!!

SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAD A GREAT TIME AS ALWAYS!!!

NICE SPEED LOPERS!!!

THE ONLY bobcat WONDERING IF YOU PUT THEM IN THE TRUNK OF A CAR???(JUST KIDDING!!!)

HA! Actually Bessie, Lori's did go into a cooler in the trunk of an Audi stationwagon!

And the back of my truck still smells like a gazebo!

THE ONLY predator THAT ROUTINELY GETS LOPER FEVER IN THE FALL!!

Those are both very impressive pronghorns! Congrats to both of you. They sure are fun to hunt!

Steve

Preddy!!!

I REMEMBER READING THE STORY ABOUT YOUR COUES HUNT & THE RENTAL TAURUS!!!

LOL!!!

WAS THERE ANY BLOOD IN THE TRUNK WHEN YOU TOOK IT BACK???

THE ONLY bobcat ENJOYING YOUR STORIES!!!

Bessie, nope, I used a tarp and wrapped it up like a burrito.....it did smell a little funny, tho. :)

And I guess I'll share the hilarious moment on this trip, too. There was a cyst or tumor or something on the one goat's cape. It was about the size of a large egg, and I had to detach it from the cape. I was doing this by headlamp in the dark, cuz Lori shot her goat right about sunset.

Well, I just about get this disgusting THING off the cape when I slip and puncture it. It shot some yellow, smelly, cheeze-curd stuff all over my face. And I mean all over! Just like a freakin' huge zit. I was talking at the time, so I got some in my mouth, my eyes, you name it.

Believe it or not, Predator will scream like a girl and cry when nasty **** like that gets on her person. So off I go into the sagebrush and sand screaming at the top of my lungs and freakin' out. Lori just fell down and started laughing hysterically, leaving me blind out in the brush. I didn't dare open my eyes, so I'm pleading with her to bring me some water so I can wash the crap out of my eyes, all while rubbing sand over my face to get whateveritis off.

She did bring my water and lead me out of the dark, but laughed the entire way. I never spit so much in my life. Then I had to finish the job, all the time this THING is oozing yellow cheese curds.

It was the most disgusting, albeit now funny incidents to ever happen on a hunt.

Lisa,
Good job on the pics and cograts to you two on a sucessful hunt. Too funny about the zit-cream.

Congrats on the speedgoats, your's seem to get bigger each time... Now are you ready to go to Montana and help me pick mine out for the year?? and then to South Dakota???

Since you two have been shopping lately I will trust your opinion before pulling the trigger.

Preddy!!!

I DON'T KNOW IF I'D OF DARED LAUGH OR NOT IF I'D OF BEEN THERE???

I'VE SEEN THINGS LIKE THAT ON DEER,I THINK THEY'RE BOT BAGS,I DON'T KNOW ABOUT WHAT YOU WERE DEALING WITH!!!

WHATEVERITIS,LOL!!!

THE ONLY bobcat WONDERING IF YOUR FRIEND GETS TO DO THE NEXT GUT/CAPE JOB SINCE Preddy SHOWED HER HOW???

Noch, I am improving, no doubt. Still haven't broken that 80 inch mark, though I'm not complaining! I'd love to help you, but my vacation time will be pegged after the muzzy hunt.

Bessie, gosh no! She already broke a nail (in fact, I broke one too). She's too girly girl to do that gut/cape/bone stuff........and her hubby wasn't there to help out. LOL

Besides, she plucks the turkeys I kill on her place every other year, so I figure we're even. That's the beauty of our friendship, I get to hunt her place for gobblers, and I think she'll probably want to chase speedgoats from now on!

I think that's a fair exchange, and makes for fine memories afield.

And you know what? Now that I look at the photos, I can see the zit on her goat's neck.....ewwww!!!

Lisa,

When you going to introduce me to antelope hunting!!?? THose are some awesome speed goats! Congrats to you and your friend!

SCOTT

Yep... your improving, I like this years mass but I think your Utah goats have more length above the cutter. ( I'm jealous ) setting the goal high for me this year, but I'm hunting Rosebud county Montana so 80in may be in trouble.

Congradulations again, nice speedgoat.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-21-06 AT 10:08AM (MST)[p]Geez, Noch!! Thanks for the photo gallery. I'm beginning to think that I'm just naturally drawn to a particular horn combination....and that it only ever adds up to 78!!

Why did I take this one? Because I knew I could get D2 under the prong...and almost got D3. I'm beginning to realize that you need a high prong, at least 15-16" in horn length and buster cutters to go book. This one is weak on the cutters, but you can't beat 7 inches of mass. (Lori's buck has 8).

See, that's what I love about speedgoats. They are so individually different that you can make yourself crazy trying to field-judge 'em, but when you finally knock one down, you really appreciate the uniqueness of the buck. Every once in a while, you find one that is just plain cool, like this one.

Take Lori's for example, not only is hers massive, but he has that really shiny black horn, with all kinds of bumps and nodules. His only failing regarding score is that he had broomed most of his cutters down to nothing. His cape has a triple neck bar, which I've never seen before. His cape also has a really beautiful grey frost to the ends of the hairs, and is so thick. Hers has a black face and large cheek patch, too.

Mine has a great cheek patch, a mixture of colors on his face, and what I liken to a teenager's bed hair-really long hair around the horns. It's hard to tell from the pics, but if you were to see all three sets of horns together-you'd see just how much bigger this one is. It's amazing how one inch of anything can make such a big difference.

Thanks, Nate, for a great photo comparison.

Congrats on those great looking speedgoats! Were these OTC tags? My daughter took her first one on Sunday. It's great to see the ladies knockin em down.

Thats about what im looking for this year, big cutters about4-6in above the ears, and mass above the cutters. Not going to worry too much about length.
I want 2x ear width at the base and an eye width above the cutter.
Since I have the 700 tag I have the whole east side of Montana to find him in. Montana record book says they are in Rosebud county... but I am going to concentrate on the area between Jordan and Terry.

If i dont find him in Montana I will just have to find him in South Dakota..... This 80in jinx is going to end this year... all mine are between 77 5/8 and 79 1/8.

maybe have to go check out that goat you saw on baretop last year or that unique one on antelope flats next year.

Congrats Lisa! Those are great speed goats! That was nice of you to take your friend out. Hunting is always funner when the hunter is a newbie! Have a great day and good luck on the muzzleloader hunt!

Chad

Chad, you are so right on that one. There is a special satisfaction when you can teach and share the sport with someone new to it.

WOOOO!! Snow for the muzzy hunt!!! I CAN'T WAIT.

Nat you willget one for sure, I just don't know if he will breal the 80 mark but you will see a ton of them a day. Good Luck.
Predator you guys got a couple of great speed goats, I'm sure Lori will be putting in for the Utah draws now too, hope she gets a good Muley next year,or a nice bull Elk.

Hah hah, goat cheese curd!
congrats on some awesome goats! looks to me like you do a great job of judging. also have a funny goat story to share.
My wife was sneaking up on a goofy buck with a doe in ND last week, he had one normal horn and the other grew down torwards his cheek, and as my little girl and I are watching her, through the spotting scope, sneak over the top of a hill torwards them I see her eyes bug out and she just sits down and doesn't take another step...hmm. So when she get's back I ask her why did you stop, were they too far? She says " well he was uh..ummm doing his thing..with her....twice. and then they ran off and I didn't get a shot". After I finished my fit of laughter had to rub it in that she sat there for 30 minutes watching "goat porn"! Ah things to share with the grandkids some day.

Great for you two!!

The 'Warden' is pissed after I showed her your photo's... that she didn't put in with you 2... haha
