Looking for some info. from anyone out there that might be able to help. 3 buddies and I are looking at buying a preference point this year and heading out to hunt in 09'. We don't necessarily need any trophies, would be happy with 20" size, one guy has never shot a buck before. We were looking at the Buffalo, Saddlestring area initially. Anyone have any experience hunting this area or is there another area that would suit 4 DIY's better? Any info. would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ed,

I've seen your post sitting there, so thought I'd try to respond. I don't know much about the Buffalo area, but there are lots of deer. But almost any land off the mountain (Forest Service) is private and access is very limited. You may want to check with the Buffalo or Johnson County Chamber of Commerce to see if they have any info on hunts there. And the Game and Fish often can be helpful. Call the local warden or biologist.

You could also check with the Douglas or Lusk Chamber of Commerce or the G&F folks there. There are lots of private ranches in those areas and some allow trespass fee hunting.

Having not been out west before, you may struggle with the crowds and the lack of wildlife on the Forest Service or BLM land hunts.

Good luck in your effort and I hope your have success.

I'm not much help either, but...Region D has a bit of public land. Check out Medicine Bow and also Shirley Basin. I've never hunted either one but I know there hunting ground there. Good luck!

Thanks for the info guys. Have you found that most game wardens are pretty cooperative and willing to help? We are all in our 30's and willing to put some miles on so our main focus is finding a fair amount of public land that we can get into.

Thanks,

Ed

I have hunted Shirley Basin several times for antelope ,but I have never saw a good buck deer in the basin. The big guys stay up in the mountains to the south.

Rem308 is right...good deer in the shirleys higher up on the private property. Region D gets hit pretty hard on public grounds.
