The Oregon rifle branch bull season is only 5 days long, so hunting hard is a must if you want to kill a big bull. I had passed on a few smaller 5x5, in hopes of finding something around 300. Saturday ended up being a crazy day. The first 6x6 I attemted to stalk snuck out the bottom of the draw before I could find him. As soon as I started walking out I turned face to face with a cougar charging through the buck brush on the same trail as me. I fired a shot somewhere between my hip and my shoulder and as soon as I pulled the trigger the lion made the tightest 90 degree turn I have ever seen an animal make and he took off. This had me shaken up so I told myself I wasnt leaving the truck unless I saw something monsterous. Well about 2 hours later I spotted a good 6x5 bedded in the bottom of a very large canyon. I decided he was good enough, and took off down the mountain to try and get him. I was going to have to shoot across the canyon or else I didnt have a chance. I set up right around 500 yards( I shoot a 7mm and practice often at 400-500 yards). I shot 4 shots and he didnt even move he just layed there like he didnt even know I was shooting. I knew I had to get closer. I just started walking across the open hillside, and I knew he could see me but he just sat there. As I was cutting the distance I had to cross a very steep canyon, as I was crossing the canyon I spotted a set of antler laying about 7 feet apart. The antler just looked like a good 6 point nothing better, but it looked like they had just been dropped. I got pretty excited because I knew it was a set in good shape. When I finally got to the antler I couldnt believe my eyes. It was the biggest set I have ever found both main beams over 50 inches, each anter has to weigh over 10lbs. He is a straight 6 and he has everything. I radioed my dad and told him what I found, I was going crazy. Well after I found these sheds I could have cared less about the bull I was shooting at. He took off, but I didnt even care. I had just found the biggest elk antler and I didnt even have to get bloody. Now they arent like a set you would find in Arizon or whatever, but they are the biggest Oregon sheds I have ever found.

If someone will post them for me, I will email them the pictures ASAP!!!!!

Thanks

Well to put it in perpective I am 6'3.

On the bottom picture it is the set on the left. The other two are sets from early on. These all came from the same canyon.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-31-04 AT 05:12PM (MST)[p]Good looking elk shed sets Mac, if I had to give a wild assed guess at the score, I would say low 300's, maybe 315. Main beams are pretty heavy, but tine length is short, great find though.
