Wolves With Mange

So it sounds like mange was introduced, huh?
Live and learn, I thought it was a cyclical, naturally recurring plague but....not according to that article.
Thanks for the link.

The mites tend to be around in a canine population. It tends to be population density that leads to increased animals succumbing to it. I've seen this most in fox populations. Population builds up, everyone is seeing them, and in one season half the animals in traps have mange. The population plummets for a few years until it can build up again. It is not uncommon in other canine populations, though the mites tend to be species specific. Well managed populations tend to have relatively few cases.

It is curious whether the rocky mountain populations really were completely free of the malady before the guy 'introduced' the mite; or whether he just increased the prevalence.

I killed a wolf in idaho a few years ago that had a bad case of mange. I've killed several yotes and seen many more in the same area that have it real bad. I know the wolves will kill the yotes any chance they get, so it's easily spread.

I've seen mange on yotes for years. Seems to be a cylical thing to me.

I shot a coyote in Nebraska last winter with my 300 RUM using 200 Nosler accubonds. All the hair was missing on the rear end and the tail. I told my son-in-law that anything hit with a RUM looks like that! It hits so hard that it pops all the hair off. He didn't buy it for a second but we both had a chuckle over my tall tale.
My point is, mange must be pretty widespread since I've heard about it almost everywhere.
Thanks for the comments enlightening me a little.

My grandfather used to get mad at us if we shot a fox with the mange. He always joked we did more harm than good, with everyone we shot. His theory was, one fox with the mange would wipe out the hole den. I guess he was right.
As teenagers, we were just happy to shoot one and never looked long enough for any missing fur!

Junior,

So he figured you should leave the mangey ones alone so it would infect the others, huh?

There's no problem with shooting them in Wyoming since we cannot hunt them right now...as you already know. If we're lucky the mange will dent the wolf population!

Zeke,
Exactly! It's common practice with the older generation thats left. IDK how yotes & wolves react, but one would think similar? Also like MMWB, now you see them, now you don't. Same goes with their prey.
What's crazy, my crew was hunting down below Tensleep last October. We drove thru a 2 mile strip that had hundreds of rabbits. The thought actually crossed my mind, "I wonder if yotes get the mange as bad as Mr fox? "

Yes.

How do you get them all to stay so still for the pic, DW? You've trained them well.

Cancer doesn't discriminate...don't take your good health for granted because it can be gone in a heartbeat. Please go back and read the last line. This time really understand what it says.

DW,
I showed your bunny pic to my wife and she got really upset!!!!

She wanted to know why the hell I hadn't gone out and shot a few for her this year. See, it's one of her favorite dishes and she was licking her lips while she was cussing me for not doing my job!

She made me promise to get a few for her next season. Okay, I will.

Zeke

Sorry, I just couldn't resist. My grandkids on a hunt from this year. The three oldest shot them all!

For a sentence, I was afraid you married a bunny hugger zeke!:D Now there's a good lookin pic jm77! Been awhile since I put a rabbit in the pot but my yard was gettin littered with bunny poop!

Those are huge rabbits Jeff....when compared to the gaggle of cute kids.

My own kids started their families a little later so none of my 12 grand kids are quite old enough to legally hunt but I'll be taking them with me next season. A couple of them are getting close to legal hunting age and I'm looking forward to it. Most all have enjoyed the deer hunt for several years and it's time for small game.

Those bunnies are lots better looking (and eating) than the other mangy things we've seen on this thread!

Zeke

I've seen a few coyotes over the years with mange, its not pretty. But most of them can still get out of dodge quick when you are trying for a shot!

You guys with the bunny pics are making me jealous! Dang that looks like fun. :D
