The U.S. Interior Department announced Wednesday the wolves have recovered from near-extinction and will lose their federal protection as of Jan. 27. The regional gray wolf population numbers between 4,000 and 6,000 wolves.

Michigan Department of Natural Resources Director Rodney Stokes says the change will give state officials more flexibility to deal with problem wolves and make people more supportive of having the predators in their midst.

The same is true in Wisconsin, Wolf population is around 2,000 plus wolves and is grossly exceeding the 350 population limit according to Adrian Wydeven, a DNR ecologist who helps manage wolves in the state. Wydeven said that by the end of January, Wisconsin will be able to issue permits to landowners that would allow them to shoot problem wolves. And it will become legal for landowners to shoot wolves, even without a permit, if the animals are caught in the act of attacking livestock or pets.
