what do you guys think? i know some guys know a lot about trucks on here-

i'm thinking of buying a 30 ft =/- 5th wheel. it's a great buy-

i'm just not sure my ford extended-cab/ short box with a gas triton motor will pull it very well.

what do you think? i know it aint going to tear it up a hill, and no way am i getting a speeding ticket while pulling it, but will i hurt my truck pulling it?

I own a couple of Aamco Transmissions in So. Cal. I will give you the best deal I can.
:)

LAST EDITED ON Mar-22-10 AT 11:39PM (MST)[p]if that triton is in a half ton. good luck. we have a f250 with the 5.4 - auto and it is a dog when pulling a load. worse gas milage we got was 8mpg.

if u dare pull that kind of trailer with it, i'd be more worried about STOPPING!

Definitely not if its a half ton! They are not built to support the weight, the brakes arent setup for it, Its just really hard on everything on the truck to hook it up to a load like that. I would suggest buying a new truck to handle the trailer, or looking at a smaller trailer.

NO GUTS, NO STORY!!

sorry i should have said , it IS a 3/4 ton truck.

i never thought about burning my transmission up.it did come with the "tow" package if that makes any difference. thanks for the input

Get on line and research how much your truck is rated to safely pull. Then check that against how much the GVWR of the trailer is.
I pull my trailer with a tacoma (V6) and most every one thinks I'm nuts to do so. But its within my specs for weight, but you do have to use extra caution when stopping.
For me personally, I would stay under the trucks rated capacities with an auto trans. but would dare pull up to max weight with a manual trans. But thats me.
Alot of people feel they need the biggest baddest truck that can pull their rig 90 plus up any hill.

Seriously, even with a 3/4 gas you would be pushing it. I doubt that truck is rated for it.

I would check the tow load on your vehicle then research the travel trailer to see what it weighs and then add all the junk you will have in it. I think you will find it is to much weight.
Yes, it will waste a tranny.

If it does say you can tow it, or you decide to buy it anyhow, make sure that your trailer brakes are working perfectly.

Truck towing capacites are a joke. I personally wouldn't tow more than about 2/3-3/4 of the stated rating.

I wouldn't do it.... Do you really need a 30 ft camper? Look arounf more and you can find a camper more suited to what your looking for. How many places on the mtn can you honestly get a 30 footer?

>V10 OR V8??? V10 NO PROBLEM.
>

+1!
I have just over 200K miles on my F-250 V-10.
It definately does NOT pull like the diesel or have that torque when you slam your foot in it, but it will get it done!
My only beotch about my Triton motor is when you blow a spark plug and it takes the coil out with it.
This has happened to both my Tritons, Super Duty & Expedition.
As far as stopping powere that was mentioned above, your Super Duty should have NO problems holding your trailer back.
Put a chip in that baby and go camping!!

Who does this sound like.....

HEY BEE BOY!!!

WHY DONT YOU COWBOY UP AND GET A REAL TRUCK???

GET YOURSELF A DIESEL DRINKING, SMOKE BELCHER TO PULL THAT

TRAILER ANYPLACE, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME!!

OLD FOLKS, PETS, KIDS AND HYBRID CARS WATCHOUT CUZ' THE CATS

COMING HARD AND FAST!!

LMAO!!! ahhh the good old days!!!

My ole man pulls a 26 foot camper with his f150 with the 5.4 triton. He doent't get anywhere in a hurry but he also doesn't work the guts out of the truck either. Just make sure you have good trailer brakes. If you dont mind getting flipped off and honked at for going 40mph thru the canyons and getting a string of cars backed up behind ya for a half mile the triton will be fine.
WHISKEY

I too have the F250 with the V10 motor and I pull a 29' Nomad (bumper pull) all over the place. I have about 135K miles on my truck and it is not chipped. It pulls Danials or Fairview just fine - read "fine" as slow. :)

Seriously though, I havne't had any problems pulling or stopping my trailer with the stock equipment I have but it does get old when you get passed by them smoke belchers!!

Good luck and we'll see ya on the mountain.

Jeremy

thanks for the input. i will call and see what the weight of the trailer is. ONLY when it comes to pulling a trailer do i kind of wish i had a diesel. but the other 95% of the time i'm o.k. with gas.

i does make me wish for one when my father in law pulls are smaller camp trailer up this hill ,with his cumming, in 6th gear, and could get speeding tickets, while my trucks pulls it at 40mph. THATS when i wish i had a diesel.

thanks again

one other aspect im surprised no one mentioend is this,, your auto insurance will not cover any damage done to the vehicle or trailer if something happens if the trailers gvwr is higher than the trucks pulling gvwr. my friend found this out the hard way, 100k worth of truck and trailer gone in a flash!! So if you really want the trailer that big and want to be covered then better get a 1ton...

dont even try with that 5.4L. the 30ft trailers weight will be XXXX then add all the water, clothes, food, gear....etc. add about another 1500-2000lbs and thats what about the trailer will weigh. My dad had a F250 with the 5.4 and had a 18' trailer and it had problems pulling over any kind of SMALL hill. He ended up loosing his tranny at 39K miles! Due to excessive weight the dealer said!

Trade it in for a V10 or look for a much smaller trailer!

Just my 2 cents...

I think you would be fine just take it easy on the hills and be careful on stops.. I have a 3/4 ton Dodge 5.7 Hemi and I pull a horse trailer with 4 horses bumper pull all the time, Make sure the brakes work on the trailer and go have a good time. If you were pulling every single day or extremeley long trips I might say different, Come to think of it my Father in Law pulls a, Case 580 Backhoe< With a 3/4 ton Truck all the time too for his buisness On a 5th wheel trailer and I know that camper does not come close to it in weight.. It is a cummins though but as far as weight You will be just fine don't let em fool ya.

that aint a high rev'en gas short stroke conversion kit. that is a real diesel and that's why he can pull it. Stopping is a whole other story. }>}>}>

I also had a 30' 5th wheel that was 13500 pounds, my 2000 F350 W/ TRITON V10 pulled it just fine, sold it for a smaller trailer because I could'nt get it up the twisty dirt roads to elk camp, also I cant back up worth a hoot.
your 3/4 ton will do just fine, not the fastest up the mountian but reliable, and don't worry about the tranny if yours has the tow package& cooler, it's tough, go camping and have fun..

No ##### sherlock thats why I put as far as weight goes on my post. I was just using that as an example of weight handling not Hp or how fast he can go up hill- no difference really in the truck other than the motor same assembly line until they drop the engine in it then it changes.

Quit your damn arguing!
When somebody builds something more reliable, more powerful, more fuel efficient than a CUMMINS I'll consider one!
You don't buy a damn Dodge cuzz it's the pertiest or best off road 4X4!
