Hey everybody, Im looking for some new horn stain and I came across Wild Antler Magic (WAM). I was wondering if anybody could tell me if they liked using it and what kind of results they have gotten while using it. Also in some of the pictures that I have seen it looks like a lot of the horns have come out very dark, I am looking for a lighter color. If you have pictures please include them, and please tell me how easy it is to use. Thank you for your post.

Bought some from Wes a couple years ago & put it on some Elk Horns that needed freshened up just a bit, worked perty good, but I don't think it would'of looked as good on Deer Antlers,it was dark & a good match for dark Elk Antlers!

I think He offers a few different Shades?

For GAWDS Sakes Guys,We Got Kids on this Site,Some of them are 65 years Old!:D

I don't care if they're big or small!
If they throw lead I like em all!
:p

I bought a kit a while back and like it. It is very simple to use. The WAM kit comes with 3 different colors of dirt. they include black, red, and brown. I have stained around 25 deer horns and experimented a little with changing the colors. I added too much black once and it looked like it was in a fire. I really did not think I added that much but it turned out kinda crappy. From far away it looks ok though!. I bet if you experimented and got a system down you could make them look really good. I do have some horns that turned out great and some that turned out crappy. If I find a really nice set of antlers, I use oil based paints and that seems to produce the best look IMHO. I'll see if I can put up some picks in the next couple of days.

Thanks for the response's guys, I appreciate it. I am hoping to hear back from Wes tomorrow, we have been exchanging e-mails and I asked for him to send me some examples of the color variations that he has available.

I have used it on several deer horns from hard white to lightly cracked. It works really well, and final color depends on the condition of the antler to start with.To me,the key is the clear coat. It's a messy process for sure,so the kitchen table isn't the place to do it(if the wife is home, anyway!).I don't know how to put pics on here,so I can't show any.WAM doesn't seem to fill in cracks that well unless you apply it several times, which makes the process quite lengthy.I have never used it on elk antlers. The color I have is the medium(I think).Works good on the deer horns.Pretty good product, and you can use it over and over.

I wouldn't bother recoloring a chalky antler, but a hard antler with a few small cracks can be fixed with Elmer's wood glue. You sqeeze some glue into the crack, then sand paper some antler dust into the glue and let it dry. It seems to take the WAM pretty good. Also, a trick I found to make recoloring antlers look more natural is to scrape the WAM out of the vein areas and use a damp qtip to keep them lighter in color. WAM should be applied kinda patchy and not evenly coated so the antler doesn't end up all the same color. Keep the WAM off of the tips too, you don't want the tips dark. Also, a little fine steel wool works pretty good at putting a shine on the tips so they look polished. WAM seems expensive, but if you recolor antlers quite often, you should have a veriety of colors available. You can't expect one color to look good on every application. You can start with the light color, and if that doesn't look right, you can add a little of the darker or redder color on a second application. Just don't over-do it or you'll end up with something that looks painted.

I bought a kit a couple of years ago and used it on a white horn that had some minor cracking.

It worked pretty good and I am sure I could have made it look a lot better if I would have spent the time to do so. I should have done another coat and I should have spent more time polishing the tips.

Nice thing is I still can and will when I get the time :)

I think this one was the brown and this is what 1 coat did for the antler.

Hope this helps! I like the product and plan to use it more.

O_S_O_K, that came out really nice, I was worried that the horns came out to dark but you proved that wrong, I really like the lighter colors. I made my order on Sunday so I am expecting it to get here any day now. I will post pictures of some of the horns that I do.

Like I said before if I find a nice horn I'll just use oil based paints but If I find a horn that isn't the greatest I'll use the WAM. I have done a few dead heads with WAM. I'll try and dig out some more for you. Sorry it took so long. Smitty.

These are all WAM. On the big Left sided horn I tried to make it a very dark horn and added a small amount of the black color and that was a mistake. It did not turn out very well IMHO. I would have used oil based paints on it but it was cracked. I just soaked the horn in some H2O and wet sanded some chalky bone into the cracks and let it dry before I used the WAM. Then clear coat it and buff out the shine w/ steel wool. Or leave the shine on for a different look.

Smitty thank you for posting the pictures I apprectiate the help. There is a very big difference between the oil based and the WAM. I have been using an oil based stain from Van Dykes and I liked how they came out but I just wanted to try something new. The WAM that I ordered should be here by Thursday and am looking forward to using it. I will post up some pictures when I do a couple.
