Just looking for any information on a mule deer hunt in idaho. Planning on heading out for 10 days but have no idea whats what out here. any advice on over the counter tags? or areas to hunt? just looking to see some deer and a 3x3 would be great.

Idaho has a great deal for youth hunters. In SW Idaho I would look at units 32, 32a, 39, and 40. 40 is a 2-pt hunt, which means during the general hunt you can't shoot a deer with more than 2-pt's on one side. It can have 15 pt's on the other side. You will typically find quite a few other hunters, especially on the weekend. During the week it isn't so bad. Will it be just you and your son? Have you ever hunted mule deer before? You should consider that depending on where you go you can either hunt elk simultaneously or when deer closes, elk typically opens the next day and as a youth your son can get a tag very reasonably. While mule deer meat is very nice, it isn't as good as elk. To consider this you would plan to come somewhere in the time frame of the third week of Oct and the first week of Nov.

unit 39 and 32 are looking good to me. any areas you would reccomend? we are looking to camp and get away from any other hunters. we would be willing to hike in to set up camp a couple miles.also how much public land is there and would we have any problems running into areas we can not hunt?

Sorry, I feel it is borderline unethical to give too much advice online for general areas, publicly or privately. You can learn an awful lot using Google Earth and Idaho Fish and Game's Map Center. The Map Center will show you all the land ownership in a specific unit. There is a fair amount of private land in 32, but less in 39.

10 days will give you a good chance to learn. Do your research, pick an area and if you can't scout before the season then scout during. Plan on being highly mobile. People will help you when your here if you aren't pushy.

If you hunt hard you will start to find deer and even bucks within 3-4 days. Plus you son can choose to take a doe if he prefers also.

Remember, this is rough country so be in shape and have some good optics.

Good Luck.

if you aren't wanting to run into people stay away from 32 and 32A, its a zoo up there during general season, 39 has more options to get away from people that don't want to put in the effort to hike. Good luck this fall.
