Wife drew unit 58 WY. Was not planning on that.

Was planning on putting in for points only, but, decided to put in for the toughest unit instead.

Well my wife drew it. In one way we are excited in the other way this is a tough year economically to hunt out of state.

My wife already has a 362" bull under her belt and our hope is to get something over 330" on this hunt.

Question?? Is a guide necessary on this hunt?

Is there advantage to paying trespass fees on private land?

I have lots of elk hunting under my belt so I would only need a guide if it is a matter of getting access or learning an area that is very tough to learn.

We will have limited time. Last year I was hunting or scouting every weekend from Aug through end of year here in NM (though my wife and I did have a WY antelope hunt). I hunt with family and friends so will not have a ton of time.

Appreciate any input from anyone on unit 58. I always try to be helpful with anyone hunting in SE NM or other areas I have hunted.

Thanks

Hey I posted this under Elk forum also in case some of you dont go into that forum.

My understanding of this unit is that it is mostly made up of one private ranch that affords public hunting during the elk season if you get written permission. The permission form is on the WY website.

Wow, you guys sure have the Midas touch, congrats! 2 Caldera muzzy tags and now this, yes, I'm jealous. We put in for 58 hoping for a miracle, and it looks like odds actually got worse this year, at least for the "special" tag.

There is a little bit of Forest service land to hunt on, but I think most people hunt on the private ranch, which is free, with some restrictions. If you haven't already done it, look at WY website for Hunter Management areas, the one you want is Carter Mountain. I spoke with the game wardern Tim Fagan, and from everything I've gathered you don't need an outfitter. Call the Cody office and get his #.

Good luck,
JR

Congradulations; There are still some good bulls in that area. You do not need an outfitter but horses would be a great help in getting in and out of the area. There is a designated camp ground (HMA) for all hunters to stay at - otherwise you'll be staying in a Cody motel. Enjoy your hunt this november. Happy Trails!!!

Someone had sent me a link to a Carter Mountain map that showed the HooDoo Ranch. Does anyone have that link or a contact number to the Hoo Doo Ranch and can PM it to me or any other private land that would give access or charge a trespass fee.
Thanks

When you look at the total size of the Carter Mountain WMA (Hoodoo ranch+), and the adjacent Forest service property, I believe that is virtually all of the unit. I doubt there is any other private land to be concerned about, of any significant size anyway.

Thanks for all the input. We decided that we will hunt it on our own and try to be there for the first part of the season and go back for late season if needed.

I actually had that tag a few years back. Lots of bulls, so dont shoot the first nice one you see. The hoodoo ranch permission is granted through the wyo game and fish website.

good luck and congrats. That is a hard tag to get

I can't help you for this area of Wyoming. Just wanted to wish your wife luck. NMPaul has been helpful to me and many folks hunting in NM. This is what it is all about!

Thanks Todd. Hopefully you can get your boys some good bulls in my neck of the woods.

As I was afraid we will be really pushed for time for my wifes 58 hunt.

My 11 yr old drew the holy grail of NM tags a youth ibex and also one of the top Antelope hunts.
My wife and I both drew ML hunts in unit 34, deer, Barbary, so we have a very full fall.

I have not yet picked the dates that we will be hunting unit 58 but thinking late oct.

We have very limited time as I was afraid of.

I know this should be a DIY hunt, but, would be interested to know if there is a scouting and map service as there are in many of the quality units in NM and AZ. I have not ever used one, but, have friends that have and am very familiar with them.
We plan on getting the permission slip to access the HooDoo ranch, but other than than will be going into this unit cold.

Does anyone know of a quality scouting service?

The very best of luck to you and your family this Fall, Paul! You're going to be busy! A good kind of busy!

Here is a post on another post.

We went 6 for 8 on our cow elk hunts in NM with all my freinds getting an opportunity, couple decent bucks for our area, may have burned up all our luck on my sons ibex.
Still have Barbary sheep, archery deer, whitetail in MS, oryx hunts, and pigs.
