Why so many left over tags?

I got my preference point refund today and they sent a list of all the areas for deer and antelope that had leftover tags. There were a ton of unsold tags! There were left over tags for Region D which surprised me. Does anyone else see this as surprising? Is the price of fuel really keeping some from going out of state?

I guess many people were like me and are waiting to see where the fuel price will be by fall . i plan on buying leftover tags if I decide to go.Back when I could go west for a couple of hundred dollars I always went, but now I have to really think about it when it will cost me $1000 or more.I may stay in Michigan . I can take 7 deer here this fall if I want to.I also drew a Michigan bear tag this year.

What can you possibly do with 7 white tails? Make dog food? Give it to homeless shelters? What do guys do with all of that meat?

There are a lot of folks that pay more than that just to backpack in the Rockies for a week or so and don't have a rack or meat to bring back home. If I did not go to hunt I would go just for the trip. Matter of fact it would be easier to get someone to go along, I think. I plan on staying in the field to save money this year. I spent 30 years working in a place I hated and had folks tell me how much each pound of meat cost me over the years. They later wanted to show me pictures of the trip they took to HI or wherever and never left a public beach or hotel or got away from the crowds. Personally I think I get a far greater bang for the buck out of going hunting out West.

Funny you said that you would go for the trip. That is what I am thinking of ,go to check out and scout a couple of areas for next year and forget about hunting this year.

I am intending to go over to my deer area and spike out a few days to see if anything has changed. It is only a few more hours from where I antelope hunt and what is that after a 20 or so hour drive. One thing about my going out alone this year is that I can do as I please. I'm planning 2 weeks or so for the trip but if it runs longer, what the heck. That is the nice thing about working part time now. The part time part works both ways ! :)
