Why do you shed hunt?

I know I'm hooked for life. There's something about that first glimps when you spot an antler that I just can't explain. I love to hike that time of year over any other time. So why do you guys shed hunt and would you rather shed hunt on a nice spring day somewhere you know your going to find sheds or would you rather have a weapon in your hand and be hunting? They're both a blast but I would have to say shed hunting!

Here is a nice buck we have two years of I found the single on the left and a buddy found the match a year before.

Holy antler quandry Batman! I don't know that is hard to answer. If I had to choose only being able to do one I guess I would choose shed hunting. Here's why:

1. i can do it all year long,

2. i still get antlers and more of them,

3. i can share the experience with more people,

4. it costs less

I know there are other reasons but those came to mind first.

However, I will say that finding a nice set in no way compares with bringing down a nice muley.

I shed hunt because I don't have to draw a permit.

BLK said it best... There is something about that first glimpse of an fresh antler laying on the ground. It gets in your blood. Shed hunting is the best way to get out and hike off those winter pounds and begin the conditioning process for the summers wildland fire season.

Why I love shedhuntin':

- There is no killing of the animal involved

- Finding a nice antler, or set, is just as exciting to me as harvesting a trophy during hunting season.

- You get to see the awesomeness of gods country first hand.

- Excersize!

- I'm almost guaranteed to at least find something...even if they are rodent chewed or chalked!

- If you become good at shedhunting, IMO, you become a better hunter during hunting season (you get to see what the animals do, where they hang out, routes they travel, etc.)

- I picked up my first shed years ago and now i'm hooked, it's something that runs in my arteries/veins!

I prefer shed hunting, mostly because it's a lot easier and I can wander around at ease instead of trying to be quiet.

I like to shed hunt though because I was born a wanderer and it gives me somewhat of a purpose for my wandering. When I was living in the city I rode bmx and my favorite thing to do was looking for new stuff to ride and I would get the same feeling finding something new to ride as I get finding antlers.

I also like to be outside and I like to be away from people and shed hunting is conducive to this.

My tricks aint for kids.

littlefoot, you make me sad, (but in a good way)

I like "bonepiles"

life IS good

After Littlefoots Pictures I have a long way to go to get even close to what he has. I found my first shed in Nevada a few weeks ago on a antalope hunt. Of course it was only a 4" spike and my brother and brother in law both found 4pt sheds, but it was still fun to find them. I cant wait to take my kids out next spring and see what we can find. If all else fails it's tiem with the family and out of the office/house.

THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN WATCHING THE SUNSET AFTER A DAY HUNTING OR FISHING.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-15-06 AT 10:38AM (MST)[p]I stared shed hunting about 4 years ago with a summer job I took. First day on the job I found a 3 point shed and it's been downhill from there.

Like a few others I like shed hunting because I can do it year-round, you get to see great country, you get excerise, and in my case I can do it while at work!

Hey LF, if you need more room on those racks, I'll send you a check and you can get rid of some of those ;-) That is just absolutely awesome. When I showed my wife your pictures, her reply was something to the effect that if our garage ever looked like that she would personally help me "get rid" of some of them!

Hey Osulogger My wife saw those antler racks and wants me to build her some !!! Just more proof that I am married to the right woman! I like all the reasons I have heard here for sheddin.I will add one tho. It's a hobby that pays for its self too!

Time in the hills is always worth more than money

I was wondering how Littlefoot was storing all the antlers he's found. What a great idea! Maybe you could open a bait shop there and the antlers would be a draw for the customers.
I shed hunt because of the same reasons most everyone on this thread has stated. I love the spring, the vision of a brown elk antler on the ground is always stuck in my mind, and I am just so fasinated with how those animals can grow antlers in so short of time.

I sure can't shoot that many big bucks in my life time so I might as well pick up as many of their sheds as I can. Plus it gives me something to do:)

shed antlers cant run and hide, and they dont wind you . Finding sheds in youre favorite hunting spot opens up a window of what deer are actually in there, the ones that you never see,the deer who have you pegged long before you ever new they were there.Besides it is such a rush to find them. Its a feeling thats hard to explain, but ,those of you who shed hunt know the feeling.
