WHY DO I NEED A GUIDE TO HUNT WILDERNESS?

WHY AM I REQUIRED TO HIRE A GUIDE OR A RESIDENT TO HUNT WILDERNESS? I SEEM TO DO ALRIGHT IN ALL OF THE OTHER STATES IN WILDERNESS AREAS WITHOUT HELP. WHAT HAPPENS IF THEY CATCH YOU WITHOUT A GUIDE IN THOSE AREAS? JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE A RESIDENT DOESN'T AUTOMATICALY MAKE YOU MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE SAFER OR COMPETENT THAN A NONRESIDENT. IF I WANT TO WALK AROUND THOSE AREAS WITH A GRANOLA BAR, TOFU SANDWICH, AND CAMARA I CAN GO BY MYSELF WITHOUT A GUIDE SO WHAT GIVES?

I call photoshop....

I think what d13er is saying is that this has been discussed time and time again and no one really has a definitive answer as to why. If one is knowledgeable to hunt other public areas, why not wilderness areas? I don't know but you can probably search the archives and find a ton of stuff on this topic.

This was done to fatten the wallets of the outfitters, its that simple.

When they made the decision to make wilderness off limits to non-guided non-resident hunters they were also mulling over the option of haveing a certain percentage of non-resident licenses set aside for non-residents who commited to hunting with an outfitter. They picked the wilderness rule. Which is the lesser of two evils if you ask me.

People become stupid in the fall, its a weird fenom, when they get a big game tag in there pocket and carry a gun they just wander around aimlessly in the woods and get lost with out a guide.

Years ago the outfitters lobbed to get this law passed. ITS A STUPID LAW and untill some out off state hunter with fat pockets decides to fight it, the law will stay the way it is.

IT HAS TO BE THE MOST LAME/BIASED/& CROOKED LAW IN ANY STATE RELATED TO HUNTING AS YOU WILL SEE IN 7 LIFE TIMES, WHY THIS HAS NOT BEEN ABOLISHED CIVILIZATION WILL NEVER KNOW. ($$$$)..............YD.

Nope, not the most crooked...Alaska requiring a guide for brown/grizzly bear, sheep, and goats.

Thats the most lame/biased/crooked you'll ever see...by far.

A CLOSE 2ND MAYBE BUZZ.......BUT WHAT MAKES THE STATE OF WYOMING LOOK SO CROOKED IS......WE CAN GO INTO THE WILDERNESS AREA DURING ANY BIG GAME SEASON TO HUNT BIRDS, FISH, EXPLORE,OR PICK FLOWERS.....BUT NOT TO HUNT BIG GAME. NOT THAT MANY GUYS HUNT ALASKA.....COMPARED TO WYOMING.....THAT IS WHY WYOMING COMES TO LIGHT MOST OFTEN. THIS LAW REALLY PUTS THE CULPRIT AS THE OUTFITTERS ASSOCIATION & $$$$ AS THE UNDERLYING MOTIVATION. I WILL NEVER AGAIN.....HIRE AN OUTFITTER IN WYOMING....DUE TO THIS BULLSPIT......HOPE OTHERS FOLLOW SUIT..........YD.

I'd have to agree Alaska's is worse than Wyomings law. You can hike, fish, camp, and even hunt big game in Alaska wilderness. You just can't hunt Sheep, Goat, or Grizz without a guide...which happen to be the most desired and high dollar hunts there. Seems crazy. Wyoming's law is kinda strange, but as a resident it at least keep's the numbers of people down in the wilderness areas so I kinda like that. Imagine if the geys river areas were wilderness?

Still doesn't make it right. As far as Alaska being worse than Wyoming I don't think so. You can still hunt some big game in Alaskan Wilderness w/o an outfitter. You can't hunt any big game in Wyoming w/o one.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-05-09 AT 10:14PM (MST)[p]clausepeak, if everybody had your attitude we would be screwed. Just for the record are you a resident, outfitter, or both? You can't look at this law with more than an ounce of common sense and not call bullsh!t!

"You can't hunt any big game in Wyoming w/o one."

Yes, you can...just have to know a resident who is willing to get a free resident guide license.

All residents can sign off for two NR friends a year.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-06-09 AT 08:09AM (MST)[p]You could always hunt Colorado or some other state if you don't agree. As far as hunters with fat wallets changing the law, won't happen. That Federal legislation they passed a few years ago after the USO debacle will ensure it stays law unless Wyoming voters press their legislative reps to make a change. Most of us don't care as there are more pressing issues to deal with. You could always call yer reps at SFW. They claim to have lots of political influence in Wyoming...

the outfitting business in wyo. is a racket. i have worked for a few wyo. outfitters and the pay sucks. but they still charge an arm and a leg for their "services" i think that you mostly pay for their incredibly large egos! outfitters are a scam. and i was born and raised in wyo.

I'm a Wyoming outfitter and have been for over 20 years, and I've always been opposed to this law. Don't lump everyone together. This is a BS law and everyone knows it. Makes no sense to me. There are lots of people from Wyoming who are not prepared for wilderness and there are lots from other states very well qualified to go in the wilderness.

But yes, we've been over this a zillion times.

SORRY FIRST TIME ON THE FORUM SO I DIDN'T REALIZE YOU ALL HAD ALREADY BEAT THIS DEAD HORSE. BUT I STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT WILL THEY DO IF THEY CATCH YOU WITHOUT A GUIDE? THANKS FOR THE INPUT!

I cant tell you what the penalty is but I can tell that you probably will get checked. I have taken non res friends into the wilderness may times and have always been checked they have check stations on the roads and patrol cabins in most wilderness areas they also run out state plates at the trail heads. A resident has to go to G&F office to register who goes in.

Here is the law and the punishment

23-2-401. Guides required; exceptions; issuance of resident guide license.

(a) No nonresident shall hunt big or trophy game animals on any designated wilderness area, as defined by federal or state law, in this state unless accompanied by a licensed professional guide or a resident guide.

Any person violating this section is guilty of a misdemeanor as prescribed under W.S. 23-2-417(a).

The Minium Fine is $110 and a misdemeanor charge for a first offense for a Non Resident caught hunting a wilderness area for Big game with out a Reisdent guide, Licensed Outfitter or a Licensed Guide.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-08-09 AT 08:13AM (MST)[p]i have been hunting the bighorn wilderness for over 10 years and i have seen a game cop once. more power to ya!! these lousy fishy police that we have around here stick to the roads and if you use your head a little, you will never get screwed with.

if you see some outfitters on your wilderness venture stear clear of them cuz they will rat you out in a second!!

Accubond not saying i agree with the law but i dont see it changing not anytime soon, probably never and its been brought up to many times on this forum.Just thinking there is better things to talk about. The dead horse Pic is right on.And for your info i am a resident but not an outfitter.Good luck to ya this season and everyone else!!!COME ON SEPTEMBER

THANK YOU FOR THE RESPONSE. WHEN I AM READY TO HUNT WYOMING AGAIN I WILL PROBABLY USE THIS FORUM TO FIND A RESIDENT THAT WOULD BE WILLING TO HUNT WITH ME. I ALWAYS BRING MY OWN HORSES AND GEAR AND I LOVE TO HUNT WILDERNESS TO GET AWAY FROM THE CROWDS. AND I DONT WANT TO DO IT WATCHING OVER MY SHOULDER LOOKING FOR FISH COPS. I LIKE TO ENJOY MY HUNTS THATS WHAT KEEPS ME SANE IN AN INSANE WORLD! I AGREE COME "SEPTEMBER!"

>if you see some outfitters on
>your wilderness venture stear clear
>of them cuz they will
>rat you out in a
>second!!

Not mention other hunters. We got checked by two wardens 12 miles in from the trailhead a few years ago. They asked if anyone else was hunting in the area. We pointed to a ridge about two miles off and said a couple guys were sitting there earlier. They mounted up and headed off in that direction...

Kalifornia gives methadone to drug addicts and Wyoming makes nonresidents hire a guide.

None of it makes any sense but theres always Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Oregon, Nevada or Arizona.

just a heads up on wilderness laws. you will get a forest service citation for not registering at the trailhead if they catch you up there.

no campfires above 9200 ft. according to u.s. forest service.

no camping within 50 yds. of a watersource.

use this info. as you see fit..... in other words, be extra sneekee carefull if you are planning on hunting wilderness without a guide.

i like this law because it gives residents a place to hunt that isnt already getting raped by out of state hunters. long live the this law! wish they would do something similar on the winter ranges...

this law is nothing more than a way for the outfitters to line their pockets.

as i stated before, anyone who wants to hunt the wilderness can contact me and i will guide for free.

Do you have horses? I don't really need a guide, but yer welcome to come along if you have some pack animals...
-
Here's one you guys will chuckle at. A few years ago, I did a guided resident hunt in the Thorofare. I hunted the Thorofare five other times prior to this on DIY hunts. My guide was a resident Californian. Here was a guy who couldn't hunt the wilderness without a guide. but yet was guiding me as a resident. We had some laughs over this in camp.

easy way to get around the scum outfitter welfare. Here's how.
Go with a buddy. BOTH of you need to take the cheap, easy guide test and become a guide in WY. That is the key, you both have to do it so you guide each other. You cannot guide yourself as a nonresident but can guide another nonresident. I verified this with the F&G.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-31-09 AT 04:52PM (MST)[p]The outfitter you work for has to sign your guide license for it to be legal. That is one of the questions on the guides exam !
