Post up if you have harvested an animal with a bow. Lets see who the hunters here are.

My first deer was with a bow, 12 years old.
was a spike and the bow was only at 42 lbs but it was the best shot i've ever made. deer took 2 hops and fell over dead.

When I was 17 I killed a spike bull with my bow in Montana. That was my first. I have also taken three muleys and one whitetail.
Nothing of any real size, but all a lot of fun.

Well, I've been bowhunting critters for about 25 years now. During that time I've been lucky, taking a variety of species, with a few that were record class animals. I prefer deer hunting the most, as I've probably arrowed over 60 of them. Like I said, I've been very lucky over the years. I hunt EVERYTHING with a bow. No frog gigging here, it's called "frog arrowin" at the BOHNTR house :). Here's a "list" of critters so far:

Mule deer
Columbia Blacktail deer
Pacific Hybrid deer (CA sub-species)
Bull Elk
Black bear
Pronghorn antelope
Catalina Island Spanish Goat
Santa Cruz Island Moreno Sheep
Island Hog
Mainland Hog
Javalina
Coyote
Gray Fox
Turkey
Raccoon
Badger
Muskrat
Bullfrog
Corsican Sheep
all kinds of rabbits
rattlesnake (they're good)
quail
Canada Goose

BOHNTR )))------------->

I have been bowhunting since the age of 14 (I'm 25 now) and have managed to kill a few critters but not near as many as BOHNTR. Maybe when I'm his age, I will be able to say I've arrowed that many. I have killed 5 muley bucks with a bow and got my first elk two years ago. I have yet to arrow anything too huge. My best buck to date is a 22" 4X4 that scores around 155. I hope to match him or do better in about a week in a half or so.
>>>------>Sixgunn<------<<<
BTW BOHNTR, glad to see I'm not the only guy who has arrowed a Canadian Goose. I have also shot quite bit of small game with my bow, its great practice.

I've been pretty lucky or well practiced who knows? I have hunted mule deer with a bow in Utah for 5 consecutive years and killed 4 bucks. The biggest being a 4x5 21" wide. The others were a 3x3 first year and second year and a 4x4 the third year, missed a big one the fourth year and shot the 4x5 the fifth year. I guess it's a decent collection so maybe I'll have to take some pictures and post them this weekend.

RW

A 187 gross muley, 181 gross muley, 178 gross muley and a 160 class muley. one spike bull.

Well my list is short. I have only shot a 24" 4X4 buck at 25 yards and a javelina at 3 yards with a bow.

1 mule deer, couple dozen whitetails,1 Javalina,4 turkeys,1 wild boar,1 bear, dozen or so coyotes, fox, squirrels and racoons. To think about it ive taken more game with a bow than a rifle.Good to see a positive thread around here. Nice post!

Shot a few ground squirells with a little kids bow....shot and missed high on a 4x4 muley last year...and a small antleope buck I shot at was farther than I had judged and the arrow fell short.
Antelope season opens on Sunday and I will be in the blind for the first few hours of the day and then it will be spot and stalk for me...for a few weeks...until deer season opens and then I will be hitting them hard looking for a big one.
Good luck to everyone this year!
YB

One muley buck & one bull elk. I would have to say the rush of shooting something with a bow is incredible. I can't wait to do it again this year. :)

Can we change the post to how many we have missed?????

I have been fortunate enough to take quite a few javalina, three eastern whitetail bucks, a desert muley buck this past Dec, a turkey, one cow and a decent bull elk in 2000. I think AZtrophyhunter got my elk tag this year.

Not as much time to hunt as I would like anymore. USO is going to make it even harder to get that elk tag.

Good luck this year guys.

Ive taken several small whitetails, couple small muley bucks and one 5pnt bull elk.Hopefully this will be the year of the wall hanger.I have a couple spotted I just hope lady luck is on my side.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-13-04 AT 10:27AM (MST)[p]8 Columbian blacktail deer (6P&Y one of which makes B&C all time)over 12 Turkeys, Geese (Canadians), Carp, Rabbits, Crows, Grey squirrels, Coyotes, Wild Pigs, ground squirrels, a raccoon. All birds were decoyed in and shoot on the ground. Would like to learn to shoot a recurve good enough to shoot a bird in the air.
Hopefully I will add a Javalina to the list this year.

Bill

Well my drought on big game ended in 2000 with a 30 inch muley buck. Since then I have shot three Elk and Two Bears.I have also shot some grouse in my time :)

Got my first whitetail w/a recurve @ age 18. Still remember the shot 30+ yrs. later. Probably have taken over 50 whitetails since that first one. Still get a "rush" everytime I head into the woods bowhunt'in !!!! :7

I shot my first muley at age 16 with my bow and have since killed 10 or so more. I have also killed 4 elk with my bow the biggest being a raghorn 6X7. Hope to add a real whopper bull to the list this year! I have also killed a ton of small game and a P&Y antelope. Congrats to you all as any animal harvested ethically with a bow is a true trophy!

Chad

I have been bowhunting for 18 years and my list is a little shorter than BOHNTR's. I'm following in his footsteps.

Mule deer
Columbia Blacktail deer
Pacific Hybrid deer (CA sub-species)
Whitetail deer
Black bear
Pronghorn antelope
Catalina Island Spanish Goat
Santa Cruz Island Moreno Sheep
Island Hog
Mainland Hog
Javalina
Coyote
Gray Fox
Bobcat
Turkey
Raccoon
all kinds of rabbits
rattlesnake
quail
Mallard duck

I hope to add Elk, Sitka Blacktail deer and Coues Whitetail deer to the list as I have hunts planned for them this year. Ed F

Ed,

You've done VERY well my friend. I have a good feeling you'll add elk and Sitka here before the end of the year! Just remember to bring them to me for official scoring. :)

Hey, I'll be at the archery shop on Tuesday to score Travis' mainland hog, if you're in the area stop on by, I have some maps for you. Roy

BOHNTR )))----------->

I have harvested only one animal, a mountain lion withiut dogs, but I still have plenty of time to hunt.

I've taken 15 mule deer, 3 coues deer, 7 javalina, 9 elk (3bulls, 6 cows), 2 bears, and one turkey. All but 6 mule deer are from AZ. Started bowhunting when I was 14, and now I'm 30.

Brian

Two muley bucks and a cow elk in er, em, ya, well you know, a really long time. I'm just not a very good hunter. I seem to do it wrong way more often than most.

Cheers,
Pete

It really doesn't matter if your successful or not, it is whether or not you enjoy your hunting experience. It is nice to be successful, to be able to brag to your buddies how you did it, but in the long run just being there is what counts. I have learned more lessons on hunts where I'm not successful than on one's that I am. Some of my most memorable hunts are ones that I didn't take an animal. Not being successful doesn't make you a bad hunter, it probably just means you just didn't get any luck to fall your way. That is how I feel about things. Good luck to everyone this fall.

Brian

I reside in AZ. On my last draw, 4 years ago, I harvested a 4x4 bull elk. The bull was called in by my father and I. I was able to range and shoot the bull at 37 yards. I have a couple of nice coues bucks eyed out. Hoping for more archery success this season.

Good Hunting,

Mark

Shot a nice 4x4 last year in the North Kiabab. it was the first day of my hunt, it had just rained the night before. So the ground was very moist, wasn't much crackling of the pine needles. I started out early that morning found a few deer, even thought took a shot at a spike, I know, I know, but I was just wanting some meat for the winter. I had been there four years before that and got nothing. Seen a lot, missed alot, too!
Anyway, this buck ran right into me. Gave me a nice 20yard shot. He sure was good tastin' too!!

Good Luck to all Bowhunters!!

Mike

Believe me standman, I enjoy my hunting. I had 5 close encounters with bull elk last year that were to die for. One nice 6x6 bull drawn and quarting away at 25 yards. Like usual, he was right behind a pine at that point then winded me. I didn't get it right, but that's what keeps me coming back after all these 20 something years.

I must admit that I'm not much of a meat hunter. With only one tag per species, I tend to pass up a ton of cow elk and forkies every year. I said I wouldn't shoot anymore of those until I had a bull and a 3x3 muley or better. Now about 200 days afield and 12 years later I'm still trying for the same thing.

Needless to say it's given me a complex :)

Cheers,
Pete

My first mule deer was a two point. A friend of mine and I were headed home after the opener and seen a half dozen deer feeding about a quarter mile away with a three bucks in the bunch. We decided to put the sneek on them.

The friend decided to go down hill where for the chance that I would spook them that way. I took the straight on approach with a dip in the landscape that allowed for a fairly easy sneek. Well I figured before I popped my head up to see if they were still there that they had probably spooked but to my suprise they were still there. I dropped back down and pulled the bow back, raised and let it go. I put the bow down and seen the deer bounding off. I thought for sure I had missed. Then I heard the sound of aluminum clanking against the rocks, looked and could see the arrow stick straight up out of the sagebrush. I walked over and there he was. I had him in the neck and he dropped so fast that I didnt even see him go down.

The funniest part was that neither of us had cleaned a deer. I then remembered that I had brought a Sports Afield to read and it had in it how to field dress a deer. So we were out in the middle of the sagebrush reading line by line how to gut a deer.

Since then I have taken 17 mulies, 3 cow elk and 2 spike elk. I will be going after my first exotic this year in November with my nine year old son who will be also going for his first kills on a couple of feral hogs. Archery for us is the only hunt.

Only to doe muleys on additional tags to date. I tell you, I had more fun and excitment shooting them then shooting bucks with my rifle!

I have taken three bucks and one doe. two made P&Y
i also took one elk with martan's dad we both shot at the same time and we said whoever hits closer to the heart gets the bull both arrows hit one inch apart just above the heart. we ended up flipping a coin and i lost three times i guess it wasn't ment to be my bull.
sore feet and i have done that three times drawing, counting down and shooting at the same time at deer and now once at elk.
we did it on my 98 buck too but nobody could have hit closer to the heart because i dead centered it.
sorefeet is the best hunting buddy anyone could ever have, He went and got the truck, helped gut and cape the buck, helped load it , cooked the tender loin, then fed it to me. now thats a good guide but he is not a guide just a great guy to hunt with.

here are a couple of bucks I have taken in Utah in 2000 and 2001. The picture of the mounted one I mounted for the Utah taxidermy show and won best of category in the professional division. I have also taken quite a few smaller deer, and lots of small game.I have taken tons of grouse and even shot a pheasant in the air. I had to sit out in 2002 because I participated in the dedicated hunter program which only allows 2 deer in 3 years and these two where in my first and second year. I didn't harvest anything in Utah in 2003. I didn't have much time to hunt Utah in 2003. But had a great time in Wyoming and Idaho. I hope to score this year for deer and elk!!

Let's see -
Whitetails - 5x5, 4x5, 4x3 (one odd shaped antler, made a neat mount), and a 3x3 (my first deer)
Elk - 5x5
Grouse
A tree branch

i made the best shot i have ever seen on none other than a quail. i was about 30 yards away from a Gambels quail i was like 8???? had one of those cheap @$$ compound bows and shot it from there, arrow went thgouh and stuck him into the ground. also shot a dove from 20 with my current bow..
casey

I've killed 3 muley bucks,1 red fox,1 coyote,a couple pheasants and a couple ducks.

4 elk 5X6, 5X5, 5X5, and a cow
5 deer 4 point, 2 point, spike, and two does
1 mountain lion
numerous small game
Do have a Utah San Juan Archery Elk tag this year, hopin' for a biggin'!

IF YOUR GOING TO BE A BEAR BE A GRIZZLY BEAR!

Taken a few animals with a bow,My favorite hunting is bowhunting. I think I have around 25 or thirty in Pope And Young of all different species. Iam not trying to brag, but just have been pretty succesful not as succesful as old chucky but it will do.

When I was younger I harvested more with my bow than I have as I become older and get more selective,Or maybe I have set my goals higher and spend more time teaching the grandkids, But over the years I have gotten:
Bull elk
Mule deer
Javelina
Turkey
Sure wish I could draw a antelope tag - maybe some day.
Squirrels
RattleSnakes
Coyotes
Foxes
Rabbits
Birds
Frisbees
Carp
Porcupine
BullFrogs
Prairie dogs

I took my 16th whitetail this last year with a bow. I've also taken my fair share of coyotes (generally a couple a year). Last year I missed a dandy of a bull on my first elk hunt. Leaving next month for bull/rifle hunt in Idaho. Figure that's pretty good for the 26 years I've been around.
GOOD LUCK THIS YEAR TO EVERYONE.

I've taken elk, deer, antelope, bear, and all sorts of small game with my bow. Here a couple pictures of bulls that I've taken in general season here in Idaho.

Last years bull:

Biggest bull to date: Sorry for the crappy picture but it was scanned in.

I'll try and scan some other pictures of bow kills and get them posted.

YB,

Yep that was me. The very first Bowhunting issue. How's the season going? I'm leaving on Labor day for 8 days. I'll fill you in on what happens.

Later,
IB

Just got back from Utah where I took a small 3x2. He's my 8th mule deer with my bow. Also have taken a Coues and two Elk.

)))-------)

I have killed 7 mule deer and 3 elk the biggest buck being in the high 160's and my biggest bull scored 351. Those deer have been killed seven years in a row in AZ hopefully this will be eight and I can keep the streak going.

I am new to the sport of bowhunting but today on my deer hunt I shot a coyote at 75 yards and stopped it dead in its tracks. It only went twenty yards.

After an incredibly long dry spell I shot a muley last year and followed that up with a 29" 4x5 last Monday night. I will post pictures when I get the time to figure it out.

I have been lurking on here for a month or so but this is my first post.

I shot my first buck with a bow yesterday. Its only a two point but is still in complete velvet. A great buck to start with.

I have shot two bucks, a 2 point and a nice 3 point. I'm 17 years old now. This is my 4 year of hunting. Took the 2 point the second year and the 3 point the 4 year of my hunting.

Hello Idahoelk,
I've been fortunate enough to take 6 over the last 8 years. Have a streak of 4 in a row going now. And you?

I have been fortunate to harvest some big game animals with my bows over the years. A number of Mule deer, a few Elk and my once in a lifetime Utah Bull Moose. There have been some small game along the way too, like rabbits and grouse.

Smokepole

Sounds like things are going well. Native1 I have a post higher in the thread describing my archery kills. I'll update it now with the 6x6 elk I shot this year.

Took my first buck this past August with my bow. Been hunting 6 years with the bow and finally tagged out. Wasn't that I didn't see any deer or elk, it was just that I get a bad case of parkinson's. LOL

mule deer
whitetail deer
elk
pronghorn
black bear
cougar
mt. goat
catalina goat
grouse
ptarmingtan

ALL of my kills have been with my bow. ALL OF THEM! Three bucks, lots of carp, rabbits, squirrels... I just love it. Just some ducks with a shotgun. Nothing with my 30-06.

well i don't know how to post pictuers but if you have a camera phone i can show you the elk from this year with my bow

Shot my first bull this year with my bow as soon as I get the pictures I'll postem.

Are you asking for this year, or ever? Cause I have only hunted with a bow, I don't own a rifle. I took a bull elk this year.5x5 But I have taken Bighorn Sheep, Mule Deer and Elk in past years. From things I read here there are some very good hunters here. Why the question if you don't mind me asking?

Mule deer(7)
Bull Elk (1 6x7)
Cow Elk (1)

Chasing whitetails in North Dakota next month. Hope to add one to my collection.
Does anyone know of any good outfitters in the Northwest Colorado area? I'm looking for a quality archery hunt for big muleys.

whacknpack

I have taken 12 elk with a bow,11 bulls and one cow(my first).Six of the bulls make P.Y. and the largest grosses 357.Lots of deer but no monsters and 2 bear with one being very big, still haven't got the scull scored but should go 20in or better.

How about a 40lb plus Bobcat Tom. without dogs, during daytime.
is that good enough, Que es muy mas macho?

I have been bow hunting since I was 11 I think, so about 11 years. So far I have gotten 7 whitetail bucks, 1 mule deer buck, and this year I got my first Bull elk with all with a bow. I have had much better luck shooting more and larger animals with my bow than with a rifle, I guess I should just use my bow all the time.

I'm a newbie, getting my first bow last November and taking a nice russian sow last May. My son, also new, stuck a nice boar that went around 400lbs with 3" tusks on the same hunt. What a thrill!

I've taken a couple of mule deer with a bow. Should of killed a bull a couple of years ago, passed on an ok bull to try to get a shot at a bigger one, but ended up never getting a shot. This was on a LE in Utah. My bro.-in-law drew out with me and killed a 5X5 that netted 342.

Mule Deer (5) all small spikes to 3pts
Elk(5) 5x4,3x3 spike with eye guards and back kickers,4x4,5x5,7x7 330p&y
