Can anyone give some information on Montana's unlimited units 300, 303, 500 & 501 in regards to:

1. Sheep/Ram numbers
2. Hunting Pressure
3. Success Rates
4. Good areas to find rams
5. Any other information that may be useful

Thank you

1. Sheep/Ram numbers
Very few sheep, rams are usually pretty small.

2. Hunting Pressure
Plenty, and a few outfitters that baby sit the sheep all summer. Seasons usually close in a few days, sometimes not however. Usually around a 1:25 to 1:30 chance, but that includes outfitted hunters too. I know a couple guys that have killed sheep in the UL units, but they spent considerable time hunting them over the course of a few years. One guy killed his sheep on the 4th year he had a tag.

3. Success Rates
For someone that isn't familiar with the area and isn't sitting on a couple diffrent rams, or spent 2-3 weeks scouting before the hunt... About as good as drawing a limited entry unit tag.

4. Good areas to find rams
Talk to the biologists. They don't know much, but sometimes are helpful. Sheep aren't like deer for instance, they travel a lot more. You might find them in one drainage one year and not see one there again for 3-5 years.

5. Any other information that may be useful
At least you're sheep hunting. These areas are in some of the most rugged and remote parts of MT. Get in as good of shape possible, then take a month off and get in better shape. All that being said... I plan on going again in the next year or two. :)
