When to hunt?

Is there any thoughts on when to hunt elk, excluding the rut. Mid October or at the end of the season. The area would be west side of the Big Horn Mountains.

Opening day always seems to be best. Or end of sept. for the rutt.

Assuming you're talking about rifle hunting (no rut effect)on public land. I'd be there about 2-3 days before the opener. Find where they are and be on 'em right away. After that its a crap shoot. They get stirred up and can be anywhere - often on private. Also, I don't know if you have horses or how you plan to get around but things can turn to sh*t in a hurry in the Bighorns. Especially as you get later in the season.
