When The Division Called…

I read the rule on reallocated tags, and still not sure on how it works? Because there doesn’t seem to be a clear answer on how the list is compiled, and the reallocation list is deemed “private”? I assumed it would be the next guy in line from the bonus tag pool, but definitely not the case in my acquisition of a somewhat premium tag! And believe me, I’m not complaining at this point, just curious?

I went into the limited entry draw this year with 4 points for deer, plus this years application. After being unsuccessful, I obviously had 5, not expecting to draw anyway…
So, “When The Division Called”, I didn’t know it at first? I don’t usually ever answer calls that say spam risk, but glad I did (I’m sure they would have left a message). It was a very nice lady saying I was next on the “list” for a reallocated limited entry deer tag, and asking do you want it? She was kinda surprised when I said yes, immediately! Asking if I needed time to think about it, I answered immediately, no, but thank you very much! Knowing this was a tag that went at 18, 17, and some 16 point applicants, in the bonus tag pool.

The hunt was only a couple weeks away, and with it being almost 8 hrs from where I live, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to scout. It was definitely old info, but fortunately my brother drew the tag 8 years ago, and tagged out on a great buck! Plus we have hunted the area before with elk tags.
My Dad and I got there on the Thursday before, and looked around. My brother showed up later on Friday, and decided to hunt where my brother killed his deer 8 years ago. Unfortunately there were a couple trucks in the spot we wanted to walk into, and had a brief conversation with the father of the tag holder who ended up taking a nice buck that I had pictures of from the night before, congratulations!!!
We ended up back in the same spot that evening with no one in the general area. Walked down the two track where we could see a lot of open area along with a small pond. Taking my pack off to get ready for a sit until dark, I caught movement past the pond, put the glass up and said I’m going to shoot that buck right there. After 10-15 minutes of waiting for them to come over the pond bank, and walking around the pond closer to where we were, he was looking even better than when I first glassed him up. Got the nod from my brother and dad, one shot from 256 yards and it was over. It’s crazy because I wasn’t but 20 yards away from where my brother was standing when he killed his buck 8 years ago. I could have held out I guess, but for 5 points and how I got the tag, I couldn’t pass him up!
My biggest buck to date!
Not a giant, but for a down year, and from what I’ve heard, I didn’t do to bad…

So I’m still curious how the list is compiled? It would have to be the next person from the random draw pool??? I did read that if there was a mis allocated tag that was taken back, they go to the top of the list, but that was definitely not the case with me?

It’s just a continuation of the list they make of who draws. So once the 50% of tags are allocated to the high point holders, everybody else gets put into the random draw. They “draw” for more people than tags so that they have a list of people to call if somebody turns back a permit. You were the lucky guy next in line in the random draw.

Awesome buck and great story!

That’s what I figured, but I thought for sure it would be the next in line from the draw in the bonus tag pool? I’m sure they draw extras there too???

I’m not sure, but I’d guess max point holders are probably harder to allocate tags to on short notice because they figure theyll be drawing soon and can plan and scout better drawing in the next year or two. Guys like you with fewer points are probably way more likely to take a tag on short notice because they don’t have as much skin in the game and the chances they get the tag in the draw in the next few years is basically zero. Thats just me thinking though.

Awesome buck and way to luck out in someone's turned-in tag!

Well done luvrax!
That's a beautiful buck.
We all wish we could some day be gifted a tag!
Hey there LBH, it’s been awhile…
Hope you’ve been getting out there and having some success!
Thank you!
It's crazy because I was going to cash my points in next year on a late muzzy tag somewhere anyway with my elk waiting period being up, so I could get back to elk! It just worked out a little better for me. I honestly feel a bit guilty, and that’s why I was asking about the process… Sure seems like they should be calling the guys that are in the bonus tag pool first???

Yep, I agree, especially back when you could turning back tags w/o losing your point for the year. It definitely doesn't help point creep to just go to the random pool, but I guess that's the way it goes.
Your good fortune will get you an early start back in the elk pool which is a smart move in my opinion. Nice work!
I did have some elk success this year! It was a blast.

Wouldn't it depend if it was a random tag or bonus tag that was turned back which list they go with? I would think there must be two lists. Congrats on a great buck!

That’s a good point, your probably right! But unless they were close in points to where the bonus tags were distributed, they would be crazy to turn the tag in if they drew in the random? But I guess shiz happens, and that’s there best option…

They easily could have been within 1 or 2 points.
