When do you start shed hunting?

Hey Ya'll
I found an absolute monster bull this year two days before bow season but, you guessed it, no trace once season started. I sure hope he makes it through the muzzle loader and rifle seasons. I think I know where he lives and I hope to find his sheds next spring. When do you all start looking for them? I'm thinking first of march, or do they lose them earlier? I'm new to this whole shed hunting thing, but I think any excuse to get out there is a good one!

I have picked up bone every day of the year literaly.The snow cover slows us down, but at those times we are out hiking observing where the bucks and bulls are wintering. Fresh deer sheds show up in Febuary, elk in March. Moose in December. My favorite shed finding time is in the fall as we watch the elk bugle and wander through the fall colored hills!

Bigger bulls usually drop them in march around here, some of the decent bulls will hold onto them untill the middle of april

I'm in SE NM. I wonder if shed time depends on the weight of the horn or if it "just Happens?" I saw only spikes at the end of march this year but that could mean any number of things.

Good advice but the missus says that I need to stay home for a while since I just go through with my elk hunt. I think maybe I can figure out a way to get back out there soon though.

you can and should shed hunt on every outdoor trip you take .This weekend we were muzzy hunting in Nevada , and we found sheds on every hike . There are new sheds,old sheds, white sheds and brown sheds . Not every shed is picked up every year. There are sheds in places people dont shed hunt. Good luck and never stop looking . we call it sheds and heads . shed antlers and indian arrow heads . Found both this weekend, good luck .

We would get along great. I also can't pass when I find places with lots of chips. I drive my friends crazy having to wait for me to come on and get to whatever it is we set out to do. I found a dozen broken points on my elk hunt this year. I figure life's too short to be in a hurry all the time.

Taking time to look at the rocks and bone is a great way to shake off the cares and troubles that would make us miserable,but sometimes when I get in a rush to find antlers it turns into to much work. I have decided to just slow down and enjoy every step!I seem to find at least as many as when I would lose sleep trying to race the young punks up the ridges.

Those young punks miss more than they find. This spring when I first started looking for sheds I found four wheeler track everywhere! Lazy little.... It didn't make me too happy. We didn't find a thing but I figured out we were looking in the cow places. Didn't find where the bulls hang out till just before bow season. Now I know where to go this coming spring. If I can just beat them to that ONE bull.....

Cookie2, you make it sound like it is only young bucks like me, being 19, out there on 4wheelers. I GlasseD countless hours and hiked even more last spring looking for and finding sheds, never with a 4wheeler. As for your original post, look at guys like Littlefoot and many others that always find time to be out in the field taking pictures. I wish you good luck finding his sheds and maybe if you get out now last years sheds might be around somewhere.

Yes I spend as much time in the park this time of year as I can. The fall colors and the bugling bulls and the sheds are a great mix!!!
