I was about 9. I grew up in very rural Eastern NM. Dad used to frequent this bar at the Quay county line a few miles from our home. He didn't drink at the bar, he just went there to BS with the other local cowboys. In fact, I never saw my dad take a drink. Not once.
Anyway, I was with him one day shooting pool and watching TV. I asked the bartender, Ed...who owned the place...for a drink of water. I took a long hard swig of....vodka. That ass had set me up, and I think dad knew about it. Do that stuff today, and both Ed and my dad would be arrested.
Years later after I had joined the Navy, I went back to that bar and had a few laughs with Ed.
Compromise, hell! ... If freedom is right and tyranny is wrong, why should those who believe in freedom treat it as if it were a roll of bologna to be bartered a slice at a time?
