Shot a buck this morning at 28 yards right in the heart region. Went down in its tracks then got off unfazed. No blood for the 300 yards we tracked it and scene it walk off like normal... My arrow had only 4" of penetration, and broke off it...I have had complete pass throughs with the same set up...NE one no what might have went wrong? Please just suggestions and not criticism...Thanks

Rib-richochet or front shoulder

That is what it sounds like to me. Did you shoot an angle?

RE: Rib-richochet or front shoulder

He was broadside looking at me. My uncle and I both scene it fly and hit solid in the heart region. Thought maybe it hit the shoulder, but we both agree that it was not that far forward.

RE: Rib-richochet or front shoulder

MH,

That seems odd only 4" in the ribs. I think it is safe to say the deer will live. Did you hit a front leg striding back as he moved forward? What about mechanical broadhead malfunction? Were you using them?

Just some thoughts from a rifle guy/has-been bow guy. If not mechanical the head had to hit something solid and square. Mysterious things happen in the wild causing us to scratch our coconuts.

RE: Rib-richochet or front shoulder

I do use mechanical heads, but I have used them for 5 years and shot 2 deer and have has 2 pass throughs. I could not see the head because its still in the deer...I might have hit the back of the shoulder, but we both swear it was a heart/lung shot. Would not have that problem with my 300 WSM, lol~

sometimes when an animal jumps the string [even a little]
you loose a lot of energy to the animal being in motiona
and different muscles moving different directions.
if he was looking at you he might have jumped a little
still you must have hit pretty solid bone.
but if that bone was in motion some of your energy would have been robbed.
i dont know????

Sounds like that might have been the case...He did jumo a bit, but like I said the hit looked darn good....Must have hit a rib wrong, or maybe the back side of the shoulder blade.

shoulder blade shot.
stuck him in the vane bone coming off the shoulder.
arrow didn't pennatrate.
if it did it would have destroyed his side and interinal cavity as he ran.
had the same thing happen about 10 years ago,
my buddy harvested the buck then in gun season.
I recovered my broadhead.
slam dunk, stuck dead center in the blade bone in the front shoulder.
it had healed up but was one nasty puetrafied pocket.
figured the dear would have later died from infection.
but it didn't seam to have bothered him much.

The noise would definetely be a loud crack if you hit shoulder. More of a thud noise on a rib hit. What is your total arrow weight and poundage your pulling?

It mad a thud, then he fell...I am pulling 75 pounds, and am shooting 100gr mechanicals...I have tuned my bow and hit straight and true...

sh*t happens. have had shots like that to. but i wonder and wonder. happen to me on a elk and had a good blood trail for 100 or so yards. trail stopped. but we saw him during rifle season and he was fine. im sure your deer will be fine to.
