What size elk will you drop the string on?

Okay its opening day you have a fresh tag burning a hole in your pocket and just as it gets light the elk start filing down the trail 20 yards above you. Are you gonna take the first legal elk or hold out hoping a big bull is bringing up the rear?

The first week I'll be looking for any pope and young canidate. Then the last week I'll shoot any bull with five points or better.

This year? I'll just take photos since Arizona decided NOT to give me a tag....again. Oh well, I don't mind the wait. Hey, do you AZ boys think they (AZ G&F) can give a third drawing just for ol' BOHNTR??? Just a thought. :) (note the smiley, just a joke. please no nasty pm's)

I guess if I had a tag, I'd wait to see what's bring up the rear and hope he's at least a 350" caliber bull or I'm just watching.

BOHNTR )))------------>

I think we could arrange for a third drawing.

I will be going for a pope and young the first week, then any bull after that.

The first branch antlerd bull that is unlucky to be within my shooting range is going down. Twaaaang..Thunk!

I will be after any bull over 330 P&Y the first few weeks and then settle for any P&Y bull the last few days. My tag this year is for a LE unit here in Utah so the potential is definatly there. On a normal year it would be any legal elk! Have a great hunt!

Wise choice Chad. I think if I had one of those coveted Utah LE tags I would be a little more picky too. As it is I'll arrow the first Bull I can. A spike might even do after a few weeks.

Roy:

Let me know when you draw that Arizona tag -- I'd be honored to call in a big ol' bull for you (serious offer) ...

Here is an update on my hunt! After blowing it on several monster bulls I killed this bull on the 3rd to last day! He is by farmy biggest and I am extremely happy with him! What an awesome hunt! Good luck to you all! I hope you will all post your success photos as well! Have a great day.

If it were an open bull unit in Utah I'd punch the first bull in the line.

If it were my once in 19 year LE permit, I'd be working for a large bull until the last minute and eat tag soup if I didn't get it done.

What's large to you or me may be different, but 330 and up I consider big. I might leave a 330 - 340 bull go in the first couple of days too.

Cheers,
Pete

Chad, wish I could say Nice Bull! But the pic doesn't work... Sorry.

Michael~All Gods creatures welcome... right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.

Micheal,

I will repost as soon as my pic gets on the MM website. For some reason it shows up small when I pull it from another server! Have a great day!

The first legal bull is definitely going down. I'm with Michael. Pass the mashed potatoes and gravy!

We just had this delema with my dad. Been waiting 30 years to draw this area in Utah. We killed a 387 bull 2 years ago on this unit and helped with a 390bull last year. We set our sights for 390+. ( by the way my dad has killed many elk in his life but none over 350ish). Anyway, we hunted 9 days as hard as we could and passed on some 370-380 bulls but could never find that 390 bull. When we went back, most of the 370 class bulls had broken up horns, and a couple we could not find again or got shot. Well to make a long story short, he shot a 340-350 bull on the 9th day of the hunt. I felt bad that we didn't shoot one of those 370ish bulls early, but if we would have, I am sure I would have been wondering for ever what we may have found. Of course his was a rifle tag also. Personnally I class bulls in 4 categories 1-310, 310-350. 350-370, and 370+. If I know there is a bullin the 370+ category in the area there is no way I am dropping a class of bull until the very end of the hunt. I guess I just like tag soup to much.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-12-04 AT 12:31PM (MST)[p]Waited for the bull's the first couple of weeks. Passed on several small bulls and at least a dozen cows. Missed a nice 6x6 (around a 320-325 bull).
Waited too long I guess. I arrowed a cow three days before the season ended. I tracked her for two hours before the light went away. Looked all day the next day. I regret to say I didn't find her. Hope she was strong and had something to live for (calf). Oh well, that's hunting.

In this past archery season in the CMR , I got close to many bulls, some very large, some spikes that still had not rubbed velvet,I mean within 20 yds. In juniper sometimes being close isn't enough. I never had what I wanted for a clear shot.
So...........I would have to say I would take the first clear shot I had, didn't happen this year.
Oh well, thats hunting.

300 classbull or atleast that is what killed this year. This was my first bull so next year if I draw this area will have to be 320 or bigger.
